Naveen & Anand M: Just wanted to clarify my statement. I repeat, my crusade is NOT against 'one' ARR or IR or DEVA or ANUMALIK. It is definitely against the practice of cheating by cut and paste or stealing the notes of another creation WITHOUT DUE CREDIT. People have done this for many years is a typical lame excuse which allows this kind of a travesty to survive. Precisely the same reason that we are prepared to accept "open drain" decorum in Jackson Heights or Devon Street even in the U.S. (because as consumers we are big-time losers with a capital L) . You have to start the correction somewhere. Music is a familiar field for many of us here so why not start with that.

rajaG,
My point is that this is a Global pheonemenon not confined to TFM. Copyright has to be tackled at the individual conscience level. It can'nt be subjected to legal microscopes. Bill Gates is the biggest offender of all. Its a given that we will lose. Am not trying to be pessimistic but its much often beaten track. One can'nt pinpoint names nor can we eradicate it together. Only way is to create awareness amongst the masses and probably boycott such creations. ARR will continue in this path for a long time to come cause he knows the trick to package it. Just sit back and enjoy.
Probably have a competition , which will encourage more of these kinda revelations.

Anand: Everytime you go over the speed limit you are breaking a rule/law. If you tell the cop, 'everybody else is speeding' he/she will not spare you from a ticket (for that reason). Do the cops verify every car at every point all the time. NO! they don't and can't. But at some point they do and send a message. That's all I'm asking.

Anand: Here's an alternative view. You want me to sit back and enjoy. I am proposing this. Let us send an "authentic" letter from a U.S. attorney representing a U.S. musician asking DEVA to explain, why litigation should not be taken against him in a U.S. court for a significant amount of royalty fees. As you say, maybe nothing might come out of it. Atleast Deva will loose sleep for a couple of days and cool the copy machine down for a few hours. Is that too much to ask for?:-)

RajaG, Frankly one issue
Long time ago I use to write here screaming at Deva, how he copies etc, frankly there were not even one to support me, finally I gave up and started aruging the usual arr vs IR vs msv clash,
Basically India has got land, labour but we dont have the big "O" organization...if at all we have a little, they can be eaisly bribed, there are various associations in madras against the video piracy...but still I saw alaipayuthe VCD in the indian shop, how does it come here?
How many of us record Tapes from the recording shops, there was also a thread here on good recording shops, this is a form of piracy?
we were part of it, Now MP3, all the news songs are in mp3, I can cut a CD at home and need not buy CD at all,
the problem is in the grass root level, we are trained to do it.
Similary people like DEVA, now the big man Arr lifts....
We cannot do anything.
"Thirudana parthu thirundavital thirutu Oziyadhu"
Rajag, ...One day who knows, Mr.Deva might flick my song from mp3.com..., to protect me I have international copy rights on the score...I will try to nail him..but enough damage would have been already done.
once again:

AnandM,
And I feel that starting a grand page as part of TFM could be a smallstep in that direction. as u said even if copyright cannot be weeded out totally atleast it would help make many people aware and wary of what's going on. It would also help many people like me who listen to both ARRs music and music by artistes from other countries to be wary when we purchase CDS. why should someone buy a CD of songs that are already available in better quality in its original version? we can discourage buying such CDs and thereby ultimately bring to noticethe issue to the copycats.
How do these artistes survive? its because of US.
Its WE who make them live. So this page, if started, could atleast make people realize what's going on and then let's leave it to them on what they want to do further in that regard.
Also people who search the net for both Dr.Alban and ARR are going to hit on this page. So it would definitely make more and more guys become aware of what's going on.
and , more importantly, it might also bring down the ARR - IR fights in this forum, as now it has been proven that both these guys are in the same boat when it comes to lifts.

rajaG,
The car analogy is dynamic in the sense that its stateless. In our case the proof is there in the pudding. If you ask DEVA for a royalty fee then Uthukkadu's folks(if they are around) can ask ARR for royalty for blatantly abusing his composition in "Alaipayuthe". I mean this is an endless loop. Guys in US are not immune to this either. Music patenting is still not in vogue. It will be nice to have one but the point is there are some elements of abstraction which will have to resolved. Am not sure wether Mozart or Bach's works are patented?
The same would be to patent trinity's work and eveytime somebody sings Thyagaraja kirthis in a public forum, he or she will have to pay a royalty to some trust. The same with light music bands playing film songs in public forums.
Carnatic muscians abuse it big time.

I have senta request to bb for making the 'copied songs' thread a permamnet one;)) that would actually be the first step. since i guess that deva is certainly going to at the helm of affairs atleast for some time this thread would be active.
anyone who feels that a certain song has been copied/inspired can give the links there in that thread. srikanth, rajaG and otheres interested can then discuss and decide whether the song is actually been inspired or not. if it is like we found out just now, then the songs enter the copied songs site. how does it sound?

Folks I think it is a good idea to start a web page or something where we can put up copies of all kinds of music. I really like this idea. Very soon some magazine will quote this web site and we have effectively spread the message. But the problem is more deep-rooted. The listening population does not have much of a background in music. So we should help spread music education. They cant tell inspiration from copy or they do not care.
We should lobby for less taxes on CD/tapes/music imports so that our people can listen to music from different parts of the world and different sources. Knowledgeable posters here like RJAY and Srikanth can start a label/studio in India. And they can make money only if CDs/tapes and stereos are affordable. We can do this while we are doing our main job too. One of my bosses used to fly to LA from San Francisco to take care of his recording business (he had a grammy winning recording engineer) as partner. Personally, I want to encourage genuine musicians and that was my motive to be part of raajangahm.com. I would like to pursue things I mentioned here thru raajangahm itself. Legal/punitive actions can only be a deterrent but does not help solve the cause of the problem. One has to engage in activities like I mention personally or thru some organisations. This is our civic responsibility.

There comes an another frustration after the "Cricket fixing story"........blatant plagiarism by ARR. It seems that me (we) have lived in a Matrix movie like world and the songs I've (we've) been hearing are all nothing but black references to Tamil Film Music, which I sincerely believed is the source for original compositions. I'm limiting myself to just one word........ cheeeeeeeee.

--- yes, but who will bell the cat, we can get the press -- will they ...i dont think so.
Belive it or not, one my friend a reporter in popular cinema magazine asked a MD about some songs he took from wc, the composer became furious, he questioned about his WC knowledge and walked out...it did not end there, my friend lost his job in few days.
Similar thing will happen here or
arr might answer it "telling good you" found it, great job..period. what if arr just says it was mani who asked me copy or what if mani rathnam says some X producer asked us to copy....I bet each one will blindly lie...to save their _ass
Anyday I am ready to offer my services to promote original music.

Guys,
Cool down, folks!
ARRs copying does not surprise me,
listen to 'En veetu thottathil', it is
direct lift from 'Nadha vindhu kalaadhee namo nama' (pallavi lifted) later he builds very well.
Listen to Kadanaguthoohalam lift in Vaadi
saathukudi.
If deva copies, it does not make me
angry. he is automatically labeling himself
as a copycat and his compositions (copy-sitions)
will be heard just in the movie halls or may
be a few days (like Aasai and Avvai shanmugi).
Audience has a way of knowing originality.
Hello mr.edhirkatchi was a flop, inspite of
having a winning piano riff (I have not heard
it yet).
For me, Deva is not a composer or MD,
he is a musician, who creates moods for new
song situations, based on his latest repertoire.
Somebody in yesterday's threads had
felt so sad that Deva may copy all IR pieces and
slowly he may overshadow IR. Man, do you think
that would happen?
He has his own function (otherwise,
why do movie producers run after him?), and
he will get what he deserves.
If we set up a page for copying, it might
help to de-idolize our idols and we might begin
to see them as technicians as we are. When we
write software, how much do we copy (cut and paste) and still call the code our own.
Such a page would help our learning, but
we should not take this weapon of copying to
humiliate talented musicians and composers.
I would rather thank Deva for his few
original compositions and feel grateful for the
few moments of bliss he has given me, rather
than strip him off his dress in public.

There is a saying 'Do not trace origins
of rivers and rishi's', meaning, you will
lose your respect and awe.
I would like to add 'Nalla isai' in that
list.
That is, if our goal is to enjoy good music.
