I just heard the soundtrack of the new Hindi film DevDas. Ismayeel Darbar (who debuted with Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam) is the only quality composer out there, no doubt. The attention he gives to melody and orchestration, choice of singers is commendable and makes him stand out from the so-called successful MDs like Anu Malik, Nadeem-Shravan and Jatin-Lalit. Wish he comes to TFM as well to pose some healthy competition to the new gen. MDs. What do you think?

Naaz,
Dilip kumar himself was a sick actor !! SK does deserve to be called that :-)

AVR, the name of the movie was ofcourse Devadas :)). The contract was awarded to C.R. Subburaman (who was a genius but died at his prime at the age of 31), but he had to be hospitalized soon. The task was taken up by his assistant MSV.
'Idaya Kamalam' is ofcourse a KVM magnum opus. 'malargaL nanainthana paniyAlE', 'ennathAn ragasiyamO idayaththilE', 'unnaikkANatha kaNNum kaNNalla', 'thOL kaNdEn thOLE kaNden', 'nee pOgum idamellAm nAnum varuvEn' and 'meLaththa mella thattu mAmA' (the only slightly below par song, the Hindi version being 'jhumkA girA rE') are the songs with PS at her glorious best. Hats off !!!

:-) - Whether DK was a sick, healthy or deranged as an actor is open for debate :-)) - but whatever the verdict, he at least had (in his early films) a certain "mystique" which the camera loved - and that's something one can never accuse SK of having. IMO :-)

SL,
by 'original' I did not mean 'first' .. I was trying to hint at the 'most authentic' .. :) .. your observation that saigal being a natural drunkard and also a singer wud have fit the role well is correct .. I have not seen his film to make a comment though .. But comparing ANR and dilip kumar, I think the former is far better ... infact, if I am not wrong, dilip kumar himself mentioned this to ANR and accepted that ANR was super in that role .. ANR also got a lot of awards for that role ..so much that he was stuck with that tag for sometime to come ..
Anyways, I wonder who among the present crop of actors would probably have been the best fit .. any guesses? aamir khan I think could be good but again I wonder if he can ever look like a loser :)

Well Dilip Kumar himself saying that about ANR can be a mark of humility. I am unqualified to compare the two as I have no exposure to ANRs repertoire. So I have no comments about that part. However I definitely have objections to Dilip Kumar being proclaimed as a deranged actor over here. Indeed, Dilip Kumar was a fine artist, and his roles in Mughal-e-azam, Ganga Jamuna, Naya Daur, Devdas, Deedar, Kohinoor, Aadmi, Ram Aur Shyam amidst many others are really wonderful, and indeed examples of versatility, fine dialogue delivery and subtle emoting.
Maybe ANR was relatively better, I dont know. But that does NOT reduce Dilip Kumar's calibre at the absolute level.

AVR - The word "deranged" was used in a humourous way, just as "sick" and "healthy" were. It wasn't meant to be taken literally. I apologise if that was the impression my post gave. There was a certain charming "madness" about his performances (a la Hamlet, say) which the audiences found seductive and irresistible. (I am thinking of films like Insaniyat, Azad, Sagina, Bairaag, Dastaan...) I don't think DK reputation and calibre needs any underscoring - just as Sivaji Ganesan's in the TFI doesn't. They just were a class apart.

Oh, my post was NOT directed to you. It was for "y???". I should have mentioned his/her name.
I know you used the words "sick" and "healthy" in a humorous way :-))

With all the Oscar hype Amir should now certainly look like a loser!
Naaz ,Bairag ? You mean the one with Leena Chandvarkar (Sare shehar..)?
If u discount star value my choice would be Manoj Bajpai for Devdas.

No, not yet. Please do not forget Dharmaraja with Sivaji doing a Bruce Lee, Yamaguchchi. World Karate Champion!!!! Sivaji's greatest attempt at committing professional suicide helped ably by TMS and MSV who were suffering from professional amnesia. The final 'thoppai' fight between Balaji and Sivaji is a sight for the sore eyes and depressed minds.

Do you guys remember "Sandhippu "? I thought it was Sivaji's greatest blunder(Well, until I was reminded of Dharmaraja of course :)) . He danced with Sridevi and Radha ( yeah..it was a "double action" film ) - with the latter in an younger avatar in the same film with his bulging thoppai carefully buttressed by a huge belt ..What a sight that was..! But the movie has some hummable songs I think..can somebody refresh my failing memory ?

Sorry, Ganesh. Thanks for the correction:I meant to say:

I remember when I was in Chidamabaram, Nam Iruvar released in Vaduganathan Theatre. My friends went and watched the movie very first day. Next day there was poster on the hostel notice board with the following:
"Nam Iruvar mulam Yemma Dharmarajanum and Chitragupthanum Chidambarathukku Varugai, Avargal antha padathai parka ungal mel pasa kaitrai visuvargal athil thappi thavari kuda sikki kolathirkal" Ippadikku Ungal Thuruthirshta Nanbargal

Here's another stunner for you. 'vetrikkoruvan', a killer. Major is Sivaji's daddy and Pushpalatha is his mummy. Sivaji is a 'chinna thambi'-ish character who has to be fed by his 'daddy'. Promise me that you would watch it along with 'Lorry Driver Rajakannu'.

Sandhippu
Sivaji duet with Sri was "Vaarthai Nanadi Kannamma" (TMS VJ)
But the song of the movie was " Sholapur Raja ..Kolapur Rani" (TMS ,MV,SJ) with Sivaji+Prabhu+Sarat Babu+SRi+Radha+Manorama on screen dancing ..should say Vudancing.. in disguise.. wearing a cooling glass!
With Sivaji i always used to relate "Kanavu Thozhirchalai" by Sujatha.Very few top actors have understood, in time ,their loss of YOUTH!(Grammar ok a?).
Back to the thread (otherwise i feel Anti-Sivaji lobby will have a field day !) what about the following ventures by HF MDs?
1.Ulagam piranthathu enakkaga -Sathiyaraj-RDB
2.Kovai Thambi s movies with LP (Panneril Nanaitha pookal ..SJ)
3.Paavi Lahari-Thai veedu,Aboorva sahodarigal and Padum vanambadi
4.LP in Sarath Kumar s Ragasiya police

OISG - Did you know that Sujatha's Kanavu Thozhirchalai was "inspired" by The Dream Merchants by Harold Robbins? So was Indhumati's Anitha (Never Leave Me by HR)
RDB - Nadhiya Nadhiya Nile Nadhiya...which film??
Thaenoorum Raagam Naan Paadum Neram - LP/SJ was a soothing melody (Uyire Unakkaga - remake of Roman Holiday!!)

Naaz, that RDB song is from Poomazhai pozhiyuthu, a Suresh-Nadiya starrer, the song is just a tamil version of "aisa na mujhe" sung by KK I think..

(** DIG**)I have not read HR.but if u remember KT i met some real "Arumai Rasans" "Kittus" and many other characters in the cine field during some Income Tax assignments when i was practising. So much for Sujatha s observations and nativity.Indumathi and Sivasankari Padaipugal Tamil Ezuthukalin MillStones.(END **DIG**)
RDB s "Meeta Meeta Pyara Pyara" was brought to Tamil by Manoj-Gyan i suppose as "Anju Viral Kenjuthadi Vanchi unnai paarthu".
ID s "Dolu Baje" reminds me of some Bhajan which i could not figure out.
With Tera Jadu Chalgaya Sonu Nigam would have expected a real breakthru with some out of the world singing..But Abishek always carry the films on his shoulders ...to the graveyard.
