Lajja is quite good. IR's BGM is impressive quite different from other recent Hindi films. But, mugam padathil iruntha satisfaction enakku ithil illai.

I saw Lajja yesterday on DVD. The BGM is exceptional in few places. However I don't understand the need for IR's BGM in the movie - don't get me wrong.
Kamal when he got IR to do BGM for Hey Ram had a valid point. There were so many sequences with no dialogues and IR was able to raise the scene to a higher level with his BGM. But here almost the entire movie (except for the last 15 min) had dialogues throughout. IR not wanting to jar the dialogues with BGM plays very little or at a very low volume (I could hardly hear anything on the DVD perhaps I should have listened with headphones - perhaps it made a difference in the theatre).
Like others have mentioned - the scene when ajay devgan and jackie meets near the river is my favourite - I haven't heard anything like that in IFM.
All, IMHO

the indiafm review is what irritates me. both links have no mention of IR.
this is why one should never accept projects like these.
I wonder if his name appeared on the credits at all(should've been the 10th namein a list in font size 4)
huh! what a watse of effort!

I finally saw Lajja, bought a DVD did not know it was duplicate, for $15.00. Anyway, the quality of the print was fine better than VHS stuff. Overall, the movie left a good feeling in your mind, but watching 3 hours was too much especially when i was looking for IR's score to appear more frequently than the meandering dialogues. There was so much scope for subtle emotions and the dialogues could have gone unsaid instead the music could have spoken and I could see that IR's score was playing so so very lightly most throughout the movie that it was indication that Santhoshi did not know how to replace the dialogues by brining the music to the foreground...
Again, the movie was great, v v sincere and from the really open heart of Santoshi. A lot of the scenes were meant to go without dialogs but i guess Santoshi did not know if the heroines would've liked no dialogs type acting. You know, Indian movies are mostly dialogues oriented for the masses. Here again, Santoshi was trying to be reaching out to two levels of audiences: the masses and the classes or the urbanites. He had plenty of dialogues for the masses and sophisticated western score in leiu of Indian sounds to please the urban crowd. So, this is where he failed. And, to top it the plentiful dialogus did sound naive most places.
About the Maestro's score. Really beautiful and subtle. If Ilayaraaja had stepped on the accelerator it would've been a score for Raiders of the Lost Ark IV! However, he gave the soulful tone for a social drama of the kind of Lajja. And, there is a criticism of the score.
I found good influence of Mozart's 25th symphony (Titan quartz, not that but the second or third movement.) in the opening title scene. The theme he repeated was great, but it seemed familiar IR tune. I really like IR's use of the French Horn, Clarinet and I think Oboe this time as it was much more stretched out and measured than in the songs of 'Guru'.
Wherever IR's score took prominence, particularly in the last 20 or 30 minutes, it was original and dramatic. At the chase and Ajay Devgan scene, the use of trumpets was fantastic.
At the chorus score, I guess IR could have done much more, but the scenes did not provide scope for a drawn out chorus or choir type music.
But, I felt that IR's score is too much for as technically and acting wise excellent an Indian film even of a 'Lajja'. So, I personally feel that IR need not involve symphony orchestras for Indian films. IR's symphonic type score is too much power, too much high level even for the best of Indian cinemas, simply because Indian movies don't need scores of such magnitude. As I said, IR with another 10 days of effort on that score, it would have easily replaced John Williams any Raiders of the Lost Ark scores.
That was my only disappointment. I have not seen Hindi movies on screen since Kishen Kanhaiya 1989(which I loved so much). But, it would be nice to have IR's regular scores on Hindi movies from Chennai. That is not to say, IR should not compose symphonies or scores for Hollywood movies. Anyway, at the top of it, I see a lot of sincerity in the movie Lajja and it is a great coming together of such great talent in the actors and actresses and director and technicians. God Bless Santoshi and his team. And, Thank you Maestro for quenching our thirst for hearing something of your symphonic efforts.

It seems ilayaraja has partiality in giving songs to directors accordingly and it is an accepted message from the film industry. How can a meastro in music will have this tendency?

UVII,
I really think, IR shouldn't go for these projects. These are typical masala projects, and has no food for IR. I really don't think , IR needs this movie.

yup, even Rajasthan had good BGM, but the audio wasn't upto the market. I really don't think , IR should go for this. I think IR should allow either KR or YSR to score for these movies. Just let the commercial guys, do the commercial, and the artistic , do the artistic one.

Sats,
Yes, I liked Rajasthan [both bgm and songs]. I wonder why many people didn't like the songs... But yes, Selvamani spoiled a good story line. IR had done great work for Vijaykanth for these types of stories [Pulan Visaranai, Captian Prabhakaran, Chatriyan...]. The story line for this movie also looks good!!
