prashant...after a hectic day's work, as i retire to my home, and turn on KAASI,it just feels so good...presently after 25-30 odd listenings to the songs of KAASI, i think there just cannot be any ranking on which song is best among the six gems...they are all top quality...

Vel,
I feel extremely happy to share my experiences listening to Kasi, as some of the postings say that the tunes suggest some older ones, (En mana vaanil sounds like Bol radha Bol Sangam.. in Hindi etc.), I think, its true, only sheer coincidence,
also, that (En aman vaanil) tune is IMO, simply ordinary, it does not evoke any interest in the listener as the song goes on, might be befitting the scene as very well explained by Mr. Saran, also I felt it to be a bit snoozy, but its Raaja again to come to my rescue, the interludes wake me up from my offtrack and then I am in the musical journey again.... its his wand that stirs up mixed orchestrating arrangements that never allow one to slip off the track.
and its the eternal and ultimate flute that enlivens anyone and it did to me!!!

Vijay..in recent times ..I like IR's malayalam efforts more than tamil !!!

BTW, Vijay correct me if I am wrong. Many genres of music are classified based on the beat/rhythm (reggae, rap, hiphop). The maanu tholu song is just a song which falls into one such genre. So naturally, the rhythm arrangement and beat will be familiar. We still should be able to see it as a different song.

Kiru, I was talking about "rokkam irukara" song, not "maanutholu". The beat structure, tune etc. I find it very mediocre and below IRs capabilities..no inspired effort at all from IR in this album..you are right in that his efforts in other languages is far better..looks like he is just disinterested with TFM for some reason..
I dont consider Chinnathambi as a great album either but the songs were far better than this one and these songs are nowhere near the ones composed for Kaadhal oviyam, another blind man story that came 20 years back...
as someone else pointed out here IR has tuned songs like "indhamaan" etc. for simple village based stories/situations..the "jeevan" that was there even in those songs is missing now..
"paatu solli" from azhagi is OK, rest from azhagai and Kaasi dont pass, IMO :-)
Listen to "shivakara" from Kochu Kochu santhoshangal or "shivamallipoove" from Friends..you'll be surprised that its the same IR who composed those songs..

Vijay,
I think IR had a big letdown in "Poonthotam", where songs were just out of the world. He was banking on it as a return vehicle but to his dismay the songs went totally unnoticed.
Also to his surprise, "Kaathaluku Mariyadthai" was a big hit. KM by his standards was average.
Porbably he would have wondered why break his head for this audience who are totally swayed by media blitz and have lost their ability to discern.
"Shiva karuda" from Kochu Kochu ..." was a materpeice and was a big hit Kerala.
I guess nursery rhymes is what TFM folks want and deserve and he is content to give it.
All IMHO

I find Azhagi songs great(except for the Pushapavanam Kuppusamy song). and Kasi songs are also great..IMO

"He was banking on it as a return vehicle "
Anand - was he? Poonthottam songs were very good, but I didn't know Raja was expecting them to be a hit.

vijay, kiru: when there was news that friends is being remade in Tamil, I was expecting eagerly for the Tamil version of `sivamallippoovE' (a song close to `ninnukkOri' standards in composition, IMHO). But alas, it's not there! Why? Only IR can answer...

poonthootam i think has some lovely numbers
1)Iniya malargal malarum (listen to the charanams, it really haunts you)
2)Gaanakuyile Kannurakkam ponadhadi (masterpiece, stunning song that people grossly missed - based on raga PANTHUVARALI, he maintains the soul of the song while staying well within the rules)
3)Meetadha oru veenai - Lovely melody by Hariharan & Mahalaxmi based on pure REETHIGOWLAI (Try comparing it with his masterpiece in same raga, viz., chinna kannan azaikiran...two diverse usage, yet maintains purity as much as possible)...

I'm a fan of IR. But still, Kasi is not upto the marks. It's kind of disappointing becasue of the hype created before the music album release.

KAASI is cool & good...i wud like to point out only one point here (there are so many points to discuss). Did you notice that raja has used percussion instruments to give different moods. IR, in the album KAASI showed RYTHMIC PERCUSSIONS too can be used to convey different moods...a few samples listed below...
Film - KAASI
1) En mana vaanil - Listen to the TABLA magic in this song...especially in the charanams...watch out for the portion where charanam approaches end and the pallavi is sung...conveys the mood perfectly
2) Rokkam Irukkira - The rythm in the interludes fits to the context of the brilliantly...while all the characters are happy here, the same TABLE has been used to produce lilting background...cool
3) Maanutholu Onnu - So an introvert blind man is now happy. Raja has, in an unimagineable way conveyed that jubliant mood of the character through a lively use of folk percussion instruments...(and watch out for the usage of THARAI in the first interlude)...
He has added a new dimension to film music composition with KAASI.

TYPO ERROR...the sentence should read thus,
2) Rokkam Irukkira - The rythm in the interludes fits to the context of the song brilliantly

Guys
Lets all hope KASI to be a big hit..... It seems Parthiban is using ARR in his film elelo (chennaionline.com).... I thought he was a diehard fan of IR(ulle-veliye, houseful, etc etc).
Any news why he did that.

12bums,vel and prashanth, i totally agree with u. As 12bum said, whenever it comes to IR, the guys started criticizing without knowing the facts. vel, as u said, lets stop debating on these kind of stupid postings that invoke as to defend it. It's meaningless. Let these guys enjoy with their ignorance. I remember the lines from 2 songs that match with this context. "Pottruvaar potralum, thootruvaar thootralum pokattum kannanukkae...." from Karnan and the next one is " ethir kaatrinilae mannai thootri selvaar, thootrupavar maelae karai thaan padiyum..." from kaakai siraginilae. ( the song is paadi thirintha enthan thozhi... BTW, enna beautiful tune,pa athu...WOW ) Thanks for ur understanding, guys.....
