Karthi, you're welcome

'silai eduthaan intha',
'pOga pOga theriyum',
'enna enna vArthaigaLO',
'neerAdum kaNgaL',
'ammammA kAtRu vanthu',
'iravukku aayiram kaNgaL',
'pagalilE chandiranai pArka pOnEn ',
'sonnathu neethAnA'
SK,
I visited PPP page and was delighted to listen to 'aarOdum maNNil' song. I was hankering after this for quite sometime and i couldn't get it during my last visit to india. The guy who records songs for me had all other songs from 'pazhani' , but this!
Of all the three singers , TMS's expressions are more captivating ( i am not taking away any credits from SG or PBS by saying this) than the rest. He delivers with a zeal giving kinda punch for those lines
"kai kattich chEvai seithu, kaNgaL kettu uLLam kettu, poi solli pichchai kEttal aNNai bhoomi gEli seivAL".
SG excels in his high pitch rendering taking it from TMS and ALR, 'oorodum sErnthunnlaam...aaaaaaa....!'

Guys,
Just a request. Could you please start a separate thread and list your uploads of MSV songs there. Everytime I have checked this thread to read new material about the creativity of MSV, I have got only upload info.

you are right! i don't want to defile the sanctity of this thread further by giving some unwanted upload information. I was listening to 'oru naaL yaaro'in the PPP page. In the line 'mella thirandhadhu kadhavu'
PS pronounces mella as 'meLLa' or is it supposed to be 'meLLa'?Did any of you notice this?
- From: aruLarasan (@ psiphi.umsl.edu)
on: Mon Aug 2 16:53:03 EDT 1999
rAmki,
both are accepted forms. i remember reading meLLa in many poems. a famous one is in bhArathiyAr's aRivE theivam. he writes
meLLap palatheivam kUttivaLarththu
---veRunkadhaikaL sErththup- pala
kaLLa madhangaL parappudhRkOrmuRai
---kAttavum vallIrO.
that whole poem is a vintage bArathi stuff.

Ramki:
naan aLLik koLLa
avaL paLLi koLLa - sugam
meLLa meLLavE theriyum
is another one. aruL is quite right.
Depending the rhyming needed in the
context, both mella and meLLa
can be used.

SK:
in the above song, Vali uses "suvai" for "sugam".
meLLa meLLa meNNu sApitAl suvai athigamAgum,
athu mAthiri, MGR SDeviyai meLLanumAm.
PS sometimes kuLaRify the la, La, za
in Kandhan KaruNai she sings:
solla solla inikuthadA
but it should be :
cholla cholla inikuthadA
sol - as a single word its OK
but as a IRATAI KILAVI it should be "cholla cholla"
TMS makes it clear in two songs:
"sollAthE yArum kEttAl"
and
"cholli cholli koduthAl varumA"
- From: aruLarasan (@ psiphi.umsl.edu)
on: Fri Aug 6 11:30:07 EDT 1999
thambiran,
i think, when the oli 's' 'ch' comes as the first consonant, then it IS 'ch'. sol should be chol. sOdhanai should be chOdhanai. it is chORu. due to sanskritization we have started using the 's' sound at the beginnning also like in 'sol', 'sORu' etc.
sorry for the digression.
- From: karthi (@ 1cust156.tnt1.rantoul.il.da.uu.net)

thambiran, may be because of the way we got used to speaking and hearing words, certain things cannot change - and if changed, they will be difficult to accept. Like "cholla cholla".
PS sings "sollach cholla" (neither solla solla nor cholla cholla) which I feel is correct. She does make mistakes but it's rare.
For eg., try saying this sentence using "cho" instead of "so":
"indha vishayathai avar unga kitta sollach cholli sonnaaru"
If you replace all so's with cho's, doesn't sound odd?

I need another help. I am trying to remember the lines
of MSV's song "allA alla" from Mugamadhu pin tuglag(or k ?).
"udal veLukka neer-thAn uNdu"
"maNam veLukka beer-thAn Undu"
Is the second line correct ? (rhyming sounds good)
water purifies body and beer does the same for mind.
But I am sure vAli wouldn't have return such thing
for a sort-of-bakthi-song like this.
Can you please help me with correct lines. Thanks
- From: nakkeeran (@ inet-fw1-o.oracle.com)
on: Mon Aug 9 14:42:22 EDT 1999
thambiran--
- 'solla cholla' is the correct version, because of the thing called 'sandhi' in tamil. ( solla + ch + solla )
- and, it's not 'Irattai Kilavi'; but it is 'adukku thodar'. Adukku thodar is a repetition of meaningful words. Irattai Kilvi is repetition of words that dont have any meaning when separated.
Arularasan--
I think it's only natural to pronunce the words beginning with 's' as 's'. When the sandhi is added, they are pronunced as 'ch'. For example:
- soru; nellu choru
- saram; muthu charam
To me, these sound more natural. If we say 'ch' all the time, then we might loose the following formations:
- poonjolai ( poo + solai)
- maanjolai ( maa + solai)
- From: nakkeeran (@ inet-fw1-o.oracle.com)
on: Mon Aug 9 14:43:39 EDT 1999
btw,
digression is regretted! :-)
