Neels,
You are right. IR's music should not be confined to Tamil Nadu alone. But, his music is not that much popular in North India. I feel there is some sort of partiality there. That means, people there are not that much interested in IR's music. Then, why do we need to worry about them honouring IR? Avanga kuduthu vachadhu avvalavudhaan. IRukku endha lossum illai. This is what I wanted to say. Of course, his great music should reach all the people, as you said.
Dhanesh,
It is true that IR has got less fame in North India when compared to his popularity in South India. He ought to have got more. Even in our own Thamizh Nadu, I feel the government could have taken some steps to honour him. Again, I repeat, IR is at no loss, if he is honoured or not. There is a rumour that VM's birthday is celebrated as "Kavingar Dhinam"!!! When these people are getting such honours, I feel IR can be honoured in a much better way. Why can't we call IR's birthday as "Isai Dhinam"?

Dhanesh,
I can't understand one thing. Why are you 'angry' about the fact that VM is in Columbia House catalogues? I feel quite happy about it because the greatness of Indian music is well spread to the rest of the world. IR has done it already with his symphony.

The Symphony is not available on CDs right ? So IR is still not in the Composer's map of the world. I dont know why he is not keen on releasing this.
Re: North Indian audience. The fact is Rahman is willing to do music in a style that people want/like IR does music in his style - either you like it or not. He caters to the South Indian musical milieu. I wouldnt worry too much Bollywood. Its only film music composition. IR is capable of more. He is in a different class.
Re: awards. I think he is not good in public relationship - especially with politicians/big shots. I am sure VM said something positive about MGR and/or Karunanidhi. But IR is not that kind. So these big shots probably consider him a 'smart aleck' or something. But this is a malady that ails our culture. We do not know to respect a person for his talents. So mediocrity thrives !!!

You're right. The entire film industry encourages, recognizes and honors only sycophants! And if any honest comment/criticism comes from the heart, well, you gotta keep it to yourself!!! Or else you are finished!
It's a fact! Have you read any review or any comment that is not very flattering to people like Rajni? No one dares to venture into that territory!!
IR, with his no-nonsense attitude thankfully doesn't have to stoop so low, to be on the ruling government's good books! He also is VERY POOR in marketing himself.(In my opinion, marketing is required, but it's the path you take that matters)
ARR, being from this generation, understands this concept of good marketing and I can attribute this especially to his exposure to the North Indian Style of aggressive marketing (remember how low-profile he was in '92 and look at him noW!!!)
If the world can accept Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan (He went on to compose music along with the likes of Bruce Springsteen in the film 'Dead Man Walking', I am sure IR will be appreciated much more than that!!! You need to let the world know what you are doing! If initiation can't come from his end, what are his prodigal sons (if I may call them so!!) doing?
Fallen,
Neels

Neels,
A small digression.
> Have you read any review or any comment that is > not very flattering to people like Rajni? No one > dares to venture into that territory!!
Rajni had spoken something against the film "Kadavul" (Dir : VeluPrabhakaran) and the policies of "Thandhai" Periyaar as such. It seems, he told that Periyaar's policies won't suit all and similar stuff. This has triggered VeluPrabhakaran so much that he has joined hands with the DK and some of them have burnt Rajni's cut-outs. VeluPrabhakaran has also criticized about "Arunachalam" getting the best film award. Nasser has also spoken against Rajni, it seems. I got this information from www.tamilcinema.com. So, there are lot of people who are against Rajni now.
Kiru,

IR had great respect for MGR and he has great respect for Karunanidhi also. He is not like VM who does everything to please them. But, he respects Kalaignar's Thamizh very much. In Kalaignar's "pavalla vizha" celebrations, he wrote the lyrics, composed the music and also sang a song praising Kalaignar's service to Thamizh. The song has one line which goes like this,
"un Thamizh sirandhadhendru nee sonnadhu illai"
which was widely rumoured that it was written to embarass VM. But, the other lines offered sheer praise to Kalaingar's services to Thamizh. And, Kalaingar too has got high regards for IR. But, still I am surprised, why he has not taken any steps to honour this great musical genius. After all, IR has contributed more to music like what Kalaingnar has contributed to Thamizh. It will be great if he takes some steps to honour IR.

Shanmugam Murugappan,
Thanks for the news. Karunanidhi probably has done some good for tamil/tamil nadu. I felt that programme to honor him bordered on sycophancy. I cant believe a CM sitting there for 4 or 5 hrs seeing/watching people dance/sing. But I am digressing.
Of the new songs - I thought the 'avatharam' song and one song from 'nAm iruvar, namakku iruvar' (by KR) sounded the same.

S M,
Check out 'thenral vandhu theendum pothu enna pannumO manasalu' from avatharam and 'Indha sirippinai' from nAm iruvar namakku iruvar.
But now after listening back-to-back they dont sound that much same. Especially after hearing the notes that IR sings in the beginning of the song.
I am now on a search to get 'avathAram' CD.
KR is also not bad especially in this song.

Guys,
I am writing this as i am listening to ... u guessed it .. Anthapuram... IR's latest Telugu Hit!!! Here goes my first Impression :
First song - IR + Chitra : Song of
the album !! The song starts with 2 lines sung by IR .and then Chitra takes over and kalakifies.. AMazing interludes.I don't want to raise expectations here but I feel this is another 16 vayathinile song set to modern orchestration. ( imagine Senthoora poove .. ). Or I am getting too carried away by the song !!
Second song : "Thai Thaka Thai ..". by Sankar Mahadevan : Typical Gult chorus song .. but okay .. I have listened to this only once.. maybe it'll be good after a couple of listens. lets see
..But the chorus is good..
Third song : "Sree venkatesa Oh Sreenivaasa ..." By SJ. The slow drums + Violin peice interludes are awesome.. This song is like some
kind of a haunting song ( similar to the vanaja girija song or the ghost song in Kili pechu Kekkavaa... the words sounded like that ..but I maybe wrong ! ) This is my second favourite song in this album.
Fourth Song : " Kalyanam Kaanunthi kanne Janaki ...." By Chitra This song starts with a child singing a chant and then chorus
picks up and in a few seconds Chitra takes over . Some kind of a Kaathalukku Mariyaathai effect . the background Hum ( IR + female ) is really good. This song is probably the heroine singing out in the streets. since i don't undrestand telugu very well ( ?) i can't make out much .
Fifth Song : "Aasalee Oh nimishum kooda Ninnu
chootaka ." IR + Chitra ( repeat of song 1 ) . This song is worth repeating atleast 3 times in the cassette. Especially when Chitra says "... Malli Malli " .. ( Malli in telugu means Again )
Final Song : " Thaluppu thaluppa ( i guess) .." by Swarnalatha A jill song .. probably a disco shanthi type of song . a feet tapper.. I don't like this song that much.. There is an instrument that is good in this song.. I do not know what .? May be syth.!! Also good drum beats ! Altogether with 3 great songs including an AWESOME song , this is a great album by IR . I think people will go nuts with song #1. My guess is , if properly dubbed in tamil , this will be another "
ennai thaalaata varuvaalo.." ( but most probably dubbing will scr** up the song .. we have seen yathramozhi and NMH this way ). Hope PrakashRaaj does a good job of Dubbing the movie and the songs
Cheers
MSK
PS: A few things different in this album .
1. IR has not sung any song ( save the 2 lines in one song )
2. Bava is missing and SJ is back after a long gap in an IR album . ( the last was Veerathaalattu .??? )
