First of all happy new year to all of u ..
nice to know that IR is on top again.. remember the days ARR flag was flying high..it looked like IR's golden era had come to an end. I have'nt heard any of his somgs from new releases or 2b released , will do..but some of his songs from poonthOttam impressed me..'meetaathe oru veenai'..my friend rajiv(from umcp and hopefully a future md) describes this as a strange but a beautiful song. He still has something up his sleeve..that's really great. I think raja should'nt rely totally on synth..he seems to be losing his old style a bit..I think the best thing for him to do would be to re-establish his strong foot hold in cine field and then get back to his old style..not fully may be..atleast a bit..
I think it is also high time he gets some international publicity..It is really sick to see ARR's vandemataram in foreign music section in Columbia House..and he is supposedly the king of Indian pop..(if u do not believe me look up in a Columbia house catalogue)..He is not bad but like a drop compared to an Ocean like IR

Dhanesh,
I agree with you on all you have said but I would like to argue with you in your following words.
>and he is supposedly the king of Indian pop..(if >u do not believe me look up in a Columbia house >catalogue)..He is not bad
ARR is not bad? Oh!!! he is quite good. He can't be compared with IR. And, as far as pop is concerned, he has done a good job. At present, we can say that he is the "king of Indian pop".
Also, I would like to argue with you on the following words also.
> I think it is also high time he gets some > international publicity.
IR has got some international publicity (although he deserves more). Why should IR get internationally recognized? Whole of TN is thankful to him for his wonderful music. IR has achieved all that is possible in music. He has set his own standard. Then, what if some other people in other countries ignore him or accept him? He is THE best, anyone accepts or not. I am sure all those people who hail other people as the ultimate MDs know in their inner mind that IR is the best. For various reasons, they are not able to accept it. So, IMO, I really don't mind if IR gets international publicity or not. IR need not get that. It is not him who is going to be honoured if he gets international publicity. Anyone who honours him will get honoured. What I need is more and more great music from this incomparable genius.

MPR,
sorry for the late response. yes, definitely i plant to listen to the KK songs in a good system. i had mentioned in my review that the only songs with good tunes were the ones sung by IR and bhava. after listening several times i have still not changed my opinion. the last 2 songs are typical of IR.

Dhanesh,
------It is really sick to see ARR's vandemataram in foreign music section in Columbia House..and he is supposedly the king of Indian pop..----
I think you need to be proud as an Indian Music fan that someone is finally getting world-wide recognition in the popular music scene. And Rahman definitely churns out popular music and IS in fact popular across the sub-continent. I was genuinely thrilled to see the album by Tavleen Singh 'Sound of the Asian Underground' in the Virgin Music store in Paris, featuring the sound-track from 'Bombay' by ARR. Not because the soundtrack is the ultimate that India has ever produced, but just to see some decent music from India being on the best-selling albums list, makes you feel good. It's all the question of 'right time' and also marketing. May be if 'Nothing but Wind' or 'How To Name It' is released again, NOW, with some good cover design and media publicity, I'm sure it too will find a place in the international stores, if not anything else.
When Ravi Shankar became a house-hold name internationally, I'm sure many Carnatic music fans were lamenting about the stalwarts in Carnatic Music not getting their due recognition. But were they really feeling 'sick' on seeing Ravi Shankar getting the attention? I doubt it. My point is, yes, IR deserves much more... his music deserves international recognition. I am a great fan of IR and I would love to see that!
(Shanmugam, not just for the honors bestowed by the West, but the reach of his music should not get confined to Tamil Nadu (or 'The South) alone)!

Hi!
The following is what ARR said about Maestro in an interview to India Talkies:
"Q: Where do you rate yourself in comparison to
Ilayaraja?
A: He is a genius by himself and is completely
self-contained.
Q: People say your entry washed him away and he holds you responsible for his lack of opportunity. Is there any cold war between you both?
A: I wouldn't say he was washed away. A new trend had come, and the whole set of directors that existed then, also receded. The entire scenario changed in every field of film making in the South: music, direction, cinematography, everything changed together. It was not a single element. So, I got to the right people. The right young directors who made films in a different way. The
change in the trend was welcomed and so was I. There is no such cold war."

Hi folks. I listened to Kadhal Kavithai. I had been to the recording of the song Eh knji pesu kannamma. I want to share with you how the final song compares with what I heard.
In all essentials its the same. However, there was an excellent bass guitar added with the beat by KR which is missing in the final song. The contributions of KR to the song are:
1. Modifications to the beat and bass guitar.
2. the second interlude guitar piece that immediately follows the flute.
I would also like to inform all of you that the chords for the charanam are pretty sophisticated. I think you must pay good attention to it. In fact I think its a counterpoint but I'm not sure.

Guys,
Oflate I'm seeing more title "songs" rather than BGM for the titles, in IR movies. Do u think this is a declining trend?
(Recent movies that I'm talking about - DG, KK and Poonthottam)

In MVU - it looks like 'nI thAn mInAtchi, nI thAn kAmAtchi' sounds like a recycled tune.
Also, in Kaliyoonjal all the songs sound familiar. Is it a remake of varusham-16 or East vAsal ? or is it that my insomnia getting to me ??

Srikanth,
If you talk to Karthik Raja next time, ask him to upgrade his electronic drums and synths. The guy is annoying me with his really cheap gear.
Aaargghh..
Just because ARR is doing it these guys do not have do the same. If they do, atleast get some good equipment. Sounds like it is made on a cheap Casio keyboard :-( :-(

Friends, Exciting news for all of us :
IR's comeback to Telugu cinema is a mega - resounding SUCCESS !!
His score for Krishna Vamsi's "ANTHAPURAM" has captured the imagination of entire Andhra Pradesh and the movie is a musical hit !!
In fact, IR had specifically composed a particular song in three different styles and had requested the director to create sequences for these songs and the songs have become revelations in AP ....
So, friends , IR's rule in Telugu cinema is back again.

Dhanesh,
You probably didnt mean to say that you were sick in seeing ARRs CD in Columbia house. But I understand your 'aadhangam' that IRs CDs are not available like this. The fact is VM was released by Sony and Columbia House is owned by Sony. Because of this Sony is also distributing it thru CD stores in almost all North American retail stores in the world music category. I saw it here in Tower Records in california. I am very happy to see this happen (I like IRs kind of music though). I hope that the western world understands our music as well as our buying power.
Dont worry Dhanesh if Sony is not doing it. We will bring out IRs album on an international platform very soon. I am still developing contacts/doing groundwork on this along with some help from friends here (SR K and Suresh et al ).
Major problem is - IR is not package well for this POP world which Sony and others understand. We just have to find a right label/genre to work with. My recent target is WaterLily Acoustics. Check out some CDs from this label. Fantastic recording. I am trying to establish contact with them.

shanmugam murugappan, neels and kiru..thanx for u'r comments..
I am not happy but angry abt the fact that VM is in Columbia House catalogues..Kiru..hope u come up with sth..good luck
talking abt publicity..why go to an international level..lets talk in a lower level..what do u think abt IR's publicity in India..he is famous in S.India,alright..what abt the bollywood..if IR had some successes in bollywood, the scene would have been totally different..he never had a major breakthrough in bollywood (I doubt if he had any good chances in the first place)..when IR became a 'maestro' probably only TN was highly excited abt it..what abt rest of india..IR is the first Asian Maestro..he obviously deserved something more and better
probably it is IR's eccentric nature that has been responsible..or it is probably the poor taste of indian masses (sorry for generalizing...but I am talking abt the majority) ..or probably there is some kind of bias against IR..
but things seem to be better now with IR making a strong comeback..
my views were probably a bit harsh..but I do not think they were wrong..
