Hey guys
I want to know what you think about Laxmikant Pyarelal and R.D. Burman. How do you like their music and their style and how would you compare them to Illyaraja and A.R. Rahman.

try this,
(set the pitch bend to 2 notes per slide)
play pa without the bend,
now jump to sa,
but you do this by jumping on to re note slide the bend down to sa, this is small gamakaam exercise try for other notes also
Like in veena we pull the string up and down to get the next note.

hari: Subbudu (who is incidentally a very good harmonium player) wanted to learn this aspect of the Keyboards and I believe, Karthick Raja taught him the nuances. Regarding keyboards, while I know some, I will let Swamiji, Comment, NJebaraj, or Kiru take over.

dear rajaG:
I dont know the technicalities of CCm. However I HAVE heard several Carnatic performances. Yes, not those ragas but others.
And I never commented badly about CCM. How many times must I tell u this? Others said sth. silly about HCm, and ur silence thereupon only surprises me.

dear aruLaracan:
1)Hats off to u for ur wonderful site on maestro Illayaraja. However just one complaint. The link for Raaga-wise listing of songs does NOT work. If u have the same, could u please e-mail it to me at lvlvlv@indiatimes.com. Also Mr Eden had once e-mailed me an Excel spreadsheet containing 1000 stars by IR. I've deleted it by mistake. Could u e-mail me that too.
2)If u dont mind, is ur name aruLaracan or aruLarasan :-)

dear RajaG:
Of course I have heard bhairavi-come on. I only have not heard rethigowali. I havent heard hanumathodi - specifically. I HAVE heard other raagas. And 'fashionable jugalbandhis' ?????
What do u mean by that?

LV: BTW, my silence doesn't necessarily mean I agree. However, I have expressly stated that I agree with what Sugrutha wrote.
Comment: LV is absolutely right. You keep wavering on your opinion on HFM and IR with no basis. It is very difficult to maintain your credibility if you continue to do this.

LV: So you have heard bairavi is it? NOT the HCM bairavi but the CCM bairavi which incidentally is quite different. What Krithi have you heard in it. Just FYI, Hindusthani Sri (rendered by Kishori Amonkar) is totally different from CCM Sri which is a different type of vakra raagam

since the postings are time based postings, like one talks the history and one talks the something later (music during ir times)
1. hindi folks dont know much ir's music ,
and the generation (majority) of people used to ir's work in tamil might have not heard hindi songs (for that matter old tamil songs also),
(eg: shanker Jaikishen was trashed here just for the heck of it.)
this is what i wanted to convey.
if it looks like it is contradictory, i cannot help it. two were posted under different context, LV is confusing.
i still maintain hindi songs in the 80's follow a formulae cerated by LP, which sucks big time.

I have always maintained that both genres of musicians can benefit by cross-training. The CCM musicians to gain better breath control, voice training and experimentation with sequencing and the HCM musicians to get the finer nuances of the raagams and swaram singing. I once heard KJY sing Charukesi on DD, with shades of HCM, and it sounded beutiful. Someone later told me that he was taking Hindusthani lessons from TVG. A lot Chennai-based playback singers have also supposedly taken HCM classes with TVG. Parveen Sulthana apparently sounds different and her swaram delivery has become more pronounced and confident after her lessons from Semmangudi. This comment came to me from a Baroda-based music student.
There is no use in attacking me for saying CCM is richer, it is better to also see what I am conveying about the benefits of cross-training.

How true indeed!!!! Bla bla bla bla!!!
Since this is a TFM forum, such a thing will not be criticised - so be it!! Thats NOT the right thing anyway.
RajaG:
Since Kishori and BalamuraliKrishna both have categorically stated that saying one is RICHER than the other is foolish (and they are both definitely more qualified than you??) then why the HELL are u supporting such an absurd claim.

This is great ! But cite one example of a popular Hindi playback artiste learning Carnatic...if KJY and others are learning Hindutani - they know which side of the bread is buttered.

It is a dangerous statmeent which would lead to unnecessary debates on the "openness" of North and south Indians. It would detrack some probable good discussion here. BTW, please be assured that voice culture in HCM is wayyyyyy too emphatic than compared to carnatic. SO if carnatic musicians are interested in learning it to improve their vocal abilities I think there is nothing wrong. They may not be really "open-minded" to receive hindustani but plain "selfish".

ragaG,
IR did 'kaatril enthan geetham, kaaNaatha onRai" in Hindusthani style and 'KeeravaaNi, iRavilE pagalilE' in Carnatic style. Both in Keeravani raagam. Both are beautiful. Frankly I have not heard Keeravani so applealingly presented in any classical concert - in either genres. But SPB's humming and swaram in the latter song - in the introduction and between the pallavi and first charanam - that is the distinction. In Hindusthani, the ragam winds in sequences seeking limits but not there, as you said - throughout the interpretation. The unique phrases belonging to the ragams are not delivered with punch. That is why one feels a little let down at the end. 'subjectkku vaangayya'nnu kaththaNum pOla irukkum. In Carnatic, the limits are constantly touched in flashes and the phrases are introduced in intervals with emphasis. athu niRaivA irukku.

Your 1000's list was of help to me. I have collected some 150 - 200 songs of IR in MP3 format. Of course, I did not download it from net. I would like to know where, in net can I get a smooth download of MP3 of IR (also ARR....for my sake).?
I have tried MP3.com. but only new songs are there. I would like to get songs prior to 1990.
