Benegals interview
http://www.indiawest.com/cgi-bin/news/viewNews.cgi?article=979847856&Department=\
He says thus about arrahman
Q: Now a very important question. What made and justified your switch from your regular composer Vanraj Bhatia to A.R. Rahman?
A: That is a very interesting question. You see, I admire three things about Rahman. Among the young composers he probably is the most original. He has a strong sense of melody and his harmony is unbeatable. Finally he gives his music a rich tonal color, richness through his combination of instruments, a character to the music.
Q: But thematic veracity is exactly what is lacking in the score. Instruments and patterns not heard in the time frame of the film are used.
A: I don't really think so. I don't think that he has used electronics. I accept that I did make him do music that was contemporary and yet had the color of the old era when needed. You see, it's very important to sound modern and not old-fashioned, or the music does not appeal. He has also given a classical base. The kind of story this is probably nearer to popular cinema. So I did not want Vanraj's classicism. I wanted the music in popular vein.

I agree with you that AIR and DD are not giving regional film music much of support or exposure...one thing is they are driven by ratings and viewerships...secondly they lack producers and visionary people who don't understand that national integration can be built up in a better way by dedicating film programs that discuss quality films and music from different states and explain also the technical points that bring out the film maker or MD's brilliance...maybe already a young script-writer or an assistant TV director has suggested this idea and has been sidelined by short-sighted producers and air-time directors...

Subbiah - your view onAIR and DD on regional languages is welcome. But in ARR forum we have to agree that regional names are definitely popularised all over india by ARR only among all MDs of TN. We should be proud that the Music of ARR originating from TN takes place in Hindi broadcasts of Air India. That is the greatness of ARR,. No politics please!
KK - There are people who dont know even about MSV and IR. I agree they will never know about KR, YSR and Bharadwaj stuff. It has to be agreed that through ARR names like Maharajan, Sivasidambaram and Srinivas are heard world over. More over music sense will definitely identify Sivasidambarams voice with his great father, whose albums are already become international (Live in London, swiss, washington etc), as he is not the same and has something special for himself, which people call, "Sangeetha Gnanamu Bhakthivina" as Saint Thyagaraja called. I wish you hear to him atleast once. Or you must have thought that his father is singing, while listening to Siva singing.

comiscian,
I know this is off the topic. AIR & DD never went by rating & viwership in south. What was the point in 75% of time broadcasting in hindi in 60s,70s and 80s given there is rich music in TN itself. Srilankan radio exploited this well. If you think it went by rating, no never. They just didnt want to give a S***, thats all. This can be applied to states which dont have big film industries, but why TN, AP and kerala?. good we dont depend on them these days.
I would prefer that our MDs ignore hindi audience all together, when making a tamil song. This will make them focused on what they are doing. I like ARR doing exclusive hindi movies. But targeting both at a time doesnt give good results.

I just watched Zubeidaa. ARR's songs were wonderful and blended with the movie well. Benegal had done a good job in picturising the songs. The songs werent typically ARR-ish - the movie was set in 1940s and 1950s. Not just the songs, but the BGM was also unusually pleasant.

Subbiah - Well taken! I saw a site on Seerkhazhi.
The best way to update is visiting www.sirkali.org.
I dont know statistics about Sivasidambaram in tfm.
I only know that ARRahman and Deva have used him properly by giving a variety. There is a news that he is also joining Opera singing in ARRahmans new venture to compose for the British and Hollywood opera. This is great to note as a native of TN. We are already in the international scenario and tfm will soon discuss international music as its forum. It definitely would not have been possible without ARRahman.

AN OPEN LETTER TO AR RAHMAN - It is important to give good number of melodies with good voices and diction. You cannot afford to kill tamil with songs.
ARR should realise the fact that this phenomenon of his to use hindi singers in tamil films will never work out in any other language. Even his singing with his urudu training in Hindi films is not a welcome in Mumbai.
Dont become a sinner by exploiting innocent tamils with 'thanglish songs'. TFM industry has seen doyens who praised and cherished the industry with the best of their songs. There is no comparison. Look what happened to them now! It is only their good work that is being spoken of when their midas touch is gone. See what happened to the great Ilayaraja, the symphony creator and the one who set a wrong precedence to you with songs of his time. He is at home doing PR work for canvassing movies and trying out something with his sons!
Try to respect nativity and give good 'tamil songs' in 'tamil films'. 'Soan pappadi singers' like udit and sukhvinder can be used in hindi or other films. Can you ever use our Tamil tongued singers in Hindi, ( why for that matter even in telugu or malayalam!)? Why didnt you or even Ilayaraja have that guts to try tamilians in telugu or kannada films! Dont try to keep off this opinion by saying 'God is great or I prefer working for Ads'. Even your Allah will never stand this nonsense, as our Annamalaiyar did for Ilayaraja whose throne you have succeeded.
You are capable and young. Your humility and devotion is well known. Please try to rectify this aspect alone.
