I second RajaG's views. The amount of vulgarity in the lyrics merely coincided with the advent of IR. But still IR tried his best to get the best out of lyricists. There are some songs of IR which are vulgar or meaningless but they are very less. There are songs like
1) loveunna loveu mannennai stoveu
2) naethu raathiri
3) paLLikoodam pogalaamaa
and so on. But these are very few when we take the total number of decent, meaningful lyrics in IR's songs.
Srikanth,
> greatest joke when people did not write what he > wanted, he started to write himself and started > torturing us.
Haven't you heard the songs of "Naadodi Thendral"? Even after hearing them, if you say, those lyrics were tortures then I can only say this "you are arguing just for the sake of it". But, I accept that quality in IR's lyrics were not as good as those in MSV's. But, this topic is to compare lyrics in ARR's songs and IR's songs and I would favour IR. And what is so funny in saying "IR to music is what Kannadasan is to lyrics"?

Raj,
> IR God of music. IR dont need good lyric. He's
> music say all emotion. VM oru mudhal. ARR fool. > NO good lyric no good music from arr-vm.
Enna idhu SPM maadhiri pesa aarambichitteenga? Relax. Anyway, It is really hard to believe that a person with lot of knowledge in music like Srikanth is constantly flames on IR.

I agree with Arvind, the second post in this thread, we should be discussing the lyricists and what they wrote under the two MDs; it will be slightly different and a fairer (at least more interesting) fight than the usual fight about MDs.
_The IR and VM combo is light years ahead of the ARR and VM combo, one only has to listen to the number of classics from each team.
_The ARR and VM combo is light years ahead of the IR and Vaali combo, now this would be a point of contention and would beg a serious debate, I will jump in if somebody starts it, I'm tired of hosting debates.
_The pre-VM IR music is one for the time capsule, there may never be another time like this one--full of the rich folk lyrics that knocked TFM off it's formal, literature and religion oriented music. IR's music revisits this era whenever R.V.Udhayakumar or Gangai Amaran write for him.
Even though, this is off the parameters of the thread, I will have to say that the Kannadhaasan-Vaali-MSV era would have to be the golden age in TFM lyrics by virtue of the depth and reach in subject matter.

I slightyly differ with Mr.Arvind's view, that MDs have nothing to do with lyrics
I feel their attitude will/may/should make a difference in lyrics
My theory is:
Probabaly MSV might have thought, that for a song to be success, it should have good music + very good lyrics. So he might have insisted on good lyrics(Fortunately he had the great Kannadasan)
IR probably had this idea when he entered the field, and later when he established firmly he might have thought that music alone is enough for a song to be success. I think he either compromised/or didnt care much about lyrics and thereby setting the trend for bad, meaningless lyrics
When ARR came into the field, already the trend is set, and also the current generation doesnt care much about lyrics. So obviously he doesnt or didnt care much about lyrics.
So how meaningful is this thread under these circumstances?.
One sets the trend and other follows it... thats it....

Here are my two bits on the discussion of quality of lyrics. I have had substantial experience in the Tamil film music industry and by and large, the amount of control that a MD can exercise over the lyrics is limited. This is more true today than ever. IR's songs have shown a wide spectrum of lyrical quality. Todays songs definitely do show a poorer quality of Tamil, but they do in fact reflect the language of the largest segment of the people who listen to the music. So the blame is neither with the MD nor the lyricist. Both pander to the tastes of the public.

I totally agree with shankar. Today, the musician has little control over the lyrics of the song. The lyrics are a result of what the producer/director expects out of the lyricist and they have the final say in approving the song!
We are to blame the producers and directors, and then the lyricists, not MDs!!

Chandy, I am not able to fully agree with your point of view in the case of ARR. I am sure ARR and VM have contributed to the "spoils". Strategies like including the name of a place like in "Usilampatti", "Theni pakkam" etc maybe VM's own ,but cases like "Take it policy", "50kg Tajmahal" etc seem to have ARR's contrubutions too ,going by VM's interview regarding the composing sessions for "Kaathalan" and "Gentleman". Terms like "Chayya Chayya" would not have been pitchforked in without consulting with ARR. He may be the originator himself in such instances.
Shankar, I do not think that there is such a thing called "public taste". The taste is in general created by the composers themselves. The quality deteriorates when the target audience is predominantly the "casual listener" types who would like a song that easily hummable or has a catchy phrase like "Chayya Chayya" or "Chikku bukku" . I am all for increasing the area of influence of film music, but excessive emphasis on "selling" alone does create a state of imbalance.
Well, the bottom line is ARR has contributed to the deterioration of lyrics.

Sriram,
"oyya oyi", "chaiya chaiya", "humma humma" and such catchy-NOISES could be brain-childs of anyone - sometimes even the producer!! MD definitely has a control over it - He can put a curb to it if he wants to.. but many times commerical considerations might takeover and the noises get injected!! Well, the noises are a contribution of a joint-effort by all these guys from whichever side it originated from, I agree that the MD has more control over curbing it.. but lets not put the blame of origin on the MDs.. lets give them more credit.

critically look at VM. i would say he has become more popular after the era of ARR. not that
he was not in lime light but i am talking about his reach. although there are songs like
chaiya..chaiya, humma humma by ARR those were basically meant for those north-indian audience, who would never beleive hearing ARR in tunes line uZHAVAN and KARUTHAMMA...
IR never got a chance to reach north, so he restricted himself with pure tamil songs with VALI, who has also contributed with his terms of NIAGRA-VIAGRA in his latest flick..
look at lyrics of UZHAVAN and KARUTHAMMA and all those folk stuff by VM..
mind-boggling indeed...
