We are all lovers of good music . So naturally that must mean a good music system. Which is the best you have come across ?
High end systems like BOSE, ONKYO or some other thing like Kenwood.
I am thinking of buying one.
expecting your suggestions.

Could you tell me whether we should go for Onkyo low end system or Sony integrated system (1500 watts, 3 CD changer et al, filling half a wall).
I listen to: classical Indian (Carnatak, North Indian) Hindi, Telugu movie songs)
The Onkyo showroom is in Chennai, whereas we get Sony service in Visakhapatnam itself.
Does it really matter: sound quality vis a vis risk of needing service.
Thanks

Sridhar,
1500 Watts. What do you gonna do, break the wall?
I spoke to the Onkyo Agent. According to him, Onkyo uses Yamaha DSP chips. If you're looking for mainly DSPs, then go for low end Yamaha Receiver, it's better than Onkyo.

What Sridhar meant by 1500W is probably the PMPO rating. I think this the max instantaneous power output. If it's true, it probably isn't gonna break the wall! Certainly, you'll have your neighbours knocking your door to lodge complaints! My friend was able to do that using just 1/3 of an 480W PMPO ( Philips PowerPlay) system. :-) By the way, I have a 30W+30W stereo system here in U.S., which almost sounded ( in terms of max sound level ) like my friend's 480W system in India. May be I'm wrong - but that's what I feel.
The PMPO spec looks like a gimmick used in India. What do you guys think?

nakkeeran,
Unlike in India, I found it difficult to spot music systems with more than say 60 W output here in shops like say, Best Buy. even if they were, they proved to be costly. is it because home stereo systems come with low wattage output only? and regarding the 200/300 W systems which we find commonly back home, do they really give that much higher sound output than the 60 W systems found here? i definitely want to know the comparison.

vijay,
To my knowledge, most of the systems sold in india use the PMPO as their watt rating. PMPO is Peak Musical Power Output - which means this is the max power that can be heard "at any instant". But, I believe, here in U.S., they specify the average power output - so, we are not comparing the right numbers! As i've stated in my prev post, i found my 60W (30W+30W - Panasonic; 5 CD changer) system to be comparable to my friend's in India with 480W PMPO( Philips - 240W+240W PowerPlay; no CD player). This is my opinion.
>> is it because home stereo systems come with low wattage
I dont think there's any such restriction. There are home theater systems with more than 100W per channel!

nakkeran,
thanx for clarifying.

PMPO is a fake rating. All these 1500W PMPO systems will probably have 5-15 W RMS output nothing more.
India is the only country where these guys publish their PMPO rating.

nakkeeran,
Sure there are home theatre system with more than 100 W per channel. But normally The Front Left and Front Right speakers carries the maximum powers. The other surround speakers does not carry huge power. Even if they carry 100 W, they sound like 10W becaused of the nature. You don't need huge power amplifiers. What you need a low impedance speakers, like 2 ohm, 4 ohm. If an amp is rated for 100 W/8 ohm, it should output 200w/4 ohm, 400W /2 ohm speakers. However, most of the amp does not do that, because they simpley burn out due to the excessive heat.

NN, may be you are right about the surround speakers. In fact, I dont think I can tolerate if they were also to blare like the front speakers.
Coming back to Sridhar... from your spec, it appears that the Sony(1500W) must be atleast equivalent to 100W+ systems that are sold here. You really may not need so much power, unless you like to listen to songs with loud volume. At the same time, it helps to have a good power capacity. So, as an average listener, if I were to choose a system there, I would go for a system with about 300W to 400W PMPO ( that is 150W to 200W PMPO per channel) spec. This is cheaper, and saves you from your neighbours!!
I have a feeling that the interior walls of our homes back in India also play a major role in the quality of sound we hear. Any opinions?

Yup, you guys are absolutely right about PMPO. NN is also right about the 'infinite' current capacity of amplifiers. The more linear the doubling of power, the better is the amp in delivering current surges.
Personally, I dont like the integrated systems because of the cheap speakers (with boxy sound) they come with. Also , the systems also have high THD (Total Harmonic Distortion) and bad Signal-to-Noise ratio.
So dont go by power output, look at THD (smaller percentage the better), SN Ratio (bigger number is better). Listen to various systems, even higher priced systems which you may not buy. Make sure the speaker boxes are solid (knock with your knuckles on them). If not, ask a carpenter to make similar size box out of thick plywood and take the stuff from the original and put it in this.
Ideally, go for a receiver and separate speakers. It will drive up the cost but it is worth it. Again, like Nakkeeran says, go for lower power but quality sound.
Connect the system to a EMI/RFI Power Surge strip. It really helps (and protects). Also, positioning the speakers is a very importing thing to do, to get good sound.

Thxs.
