Vani's voice sterotypical?????
Please listen to
Nittam nittam nellu soru-Mullum Malarum
Kelungal kavithai piranthathu-Punnagai Mannan
Indraikku yen indha anandame-Vaidehi Kathirundhal
Vava un veenai than-Sattam
Veru idham thedi povaloo-Sila nerangalil sila manithargal
Yaaradhu sollamal nenjalli-Nenjamellam niye
Even her first Hindi song-Bolure papi, composed by Vasant desai- was mind blowing. When Gulazar made the film Meera-with Ravishankar as the Music director-his only choice was Vani. She sang all teh songs in the film and she won lot of accolades for her Meera bhajans. I don't know how many of you will remember -there was a big sports event in India-called Bharatiyam and again when Ravishankar was asked to compose the theme song, he preferred Vani instead of Lata and indeed it was Vani who sang the theme song. I think that she will be only TFM singer to give a concert at the Puri jagannath festival.
Please don't underestimate Vani's talents.

Had IR chose VJ for the song "oru iniya manadhu " in Johny, I am positive, today it would be a competitor to the other marvelous masterpiece by SJ(Kaatril enthan geetham).
Again in Mullum Malarum, i dont understand why IR chose Jency for "Adi Penne" and VJ for "Niththam nithtam nellu soru". (Again Jency did a horrible job)

Till this date I do not understand why raaja gave all good songs to be spoilt to Jency.Another female lead who spoilt all raaja's songs is Uma ramanan. Her voice does not get the pitch at all. Especially with Jesu and Balu. Ex; Boobalam Isaikkum, Yaar thoorigai thantha ooviyam.

Itu oru nilak kalam? From which movie it is from?

anandaum:
I think "Itu oru nilak kalam" is from "Tic, Tic, Tic"
Veera:
Uma Ramanan did sing some very good songs and pretty well at that. "Ananda Raagam" from Panneer Pushpangal is one of IRs best songs to date and I think UR did full justice to it. Though her expressions are a little flat, her voice sounds much better than SJs at higher pitches. Another very good song was "Agaya Vennilave" from some Prabhu/Revathi movie (I forget the name). She had sung it with KJY and the song is rather high pitched. I doubt SJ would have been able to do justice to it.

The Prabhu/Revathi movie I was talking about is "Arangetra Velai" :-)

Srinath:
Fully agree with you about Uma Ramanan's voice. One of her recent IR songs was un eNNam engE engE (film??); great song, great rendition. She does swarams and gamakams very effortlessly. Another good IR song of hers is manjaL veyyil (naNdu). Yet another is pOOnkathavE... BTW, AgAya veNNilAvE is from arangEtRa vELai.

Hi guys,
Most of u are singing praise of SJ, though I agree with u that she is a goo singer. But none of u can refuse suseela's voice. She did not do any gimmicks like sj (eg.for an adolescent boy and a granny, shallini) but her voice is a perfect feminine voice. How come u guys forget that. suseela did not need the help of any md (IR) and sing all mukkal munagal songs. remember that both of them entered the field almost within years of other. But ps was singing all good sings, but sj had to wait till IR because her voice was suitable for change in the taste of people who could accept all netthu rathiri songs. Of course, she sang singara velane deva, and thookamum kankalai thazhuvattume (alaya mani) but she could not get go to top, because she had to wait for IR and go in for so called folk song and munagal songs. Remember IR in his initial stages was shunned by many so he gave propup to sj, of course I will not deny that suseela was also gtg good no. of songs, including 'sondhamilai bandamillai (annakili), 'kannan oru kai kuzhandai (gayathri)', these songs not only became popular, but it gave stature to IR also, that he can give good family songs. SJ is good with versatality somebody said, so even Chitra has sung a duet with kamal (sathi leelavathi ) and for that matter, can SJ claim that she can sing a song like Easwari 'pattathu rani - sivandaman' or the same easwari has sung 'kathodu dhan naan pesuven - velli vizha'. Definitely SJ's voice will not allow her. It is one thing to try gimmicks 'mummy peru mari or poda poda pokke' but the real class for club dancer/vamp is LR only, followed by Jamuna Rani. Of course, PS has the ultimate lead in family situations - most of u might have heard and sung 'konji konji pesi' 'atthai madi metthai adi' etc. Of course, Radha u r correct for your selection - poo malaye iru thool serava and I would add even 'adi atthadi ila manasu onu rekkai - kadalora kavidai' next to it. I am not giving any suseela's song in order because u all have heard and enjoyed it and each will prefer their own listings and all the songs of her are beautiful because of her golden voice.
By the way is it necessary to compare singers like PS, SJ and Vani with chitra? Remember that while suseela had to record a song at a stretch because of no technology. Nowadays singers sing only bit songs because already some dummy singer has sung it. So what is the great thing about? There are playback singers to playbacksingers.
What is your opinion?

Thanx to Srinath and Vijay for your info.
One thing I would like to say is that why are we keep on repeating the same thing over and over. I you have your own favourite singger then it is fine but you do not have to criticise others to make your choice the best.
Why are we acting so cheap by scorning other singers? It hurts people and the singers themselves. What are really doing by showing our egotism and criticising ability? What singers got to do with our tastes? They are doing their jobs perfectly well. We are the ones who are keep on arguing something which is so futile.
if a singer is really good than say the areas they are good, if they have weaknesses like the rest of mankind you do not have to mention it so explicitly moreover we here are simply pouring all the bitterous words without thinking what is the consequences! Well, I am not saying this to offend anyone but just want to give my view. What is the meaning of words like goo singer, awful voice and horrible rendering?
I think we can not make some one greater by putting other down. We only can make someone greater making making others great!
Hopefully you all forgive me for saying this.

Ungaludan Udanpadukiren sirithu muranpaadukalodu.
Sathiyamaa ungolodu sandai podanum endro allathu ungali criticse panna vendum enbatho en ennam illai. Just a reflection on all the posts including yours. Thappirunthaal Mannikkavum
Is not criticism part and parcel of anyone's life leave alone public personalities like singers?
Again Nobody here is criticising anyone's personal life or behaviour. As we all notice, no one misses even a single chance when it comes to praising a singer for a good job they have done.
If a singer's voice is really awful, is it really wrong in saying that?
what singers got to do with our taste?. Is it not their ambition or duty or call whatever to satisfy our taste. That is why we are patronizing them? am i wrong here?
Oruvanai thaazhthuvathan moolam nichayamaka aduthavani uyartha mudiyathu. Unmai. Appadi seyya ninaipathum thavaruthaan.
But Nallathu, kettathu, thavaru, sari appadinnu sollrathulla entha thappum illaye?
Sometimes criticism also leads to perfection if it is taken in right manner. Is it not?
Whether the words used in criticism, comparison is too harsh, i dont know.
Yennaga panrathu, kadavul kittaye kutram kandu pidicha parambarai aayitre? Avvalavu seekiram antha kunam pohuma?. Ithai harsh enkireerkal, think what nakkeeran said to Shiva
"sangaruppathu engal kulam, sankaranaarku ethu kulam"
"Sangai arinthundu vaazhvom, umpol iranthundo vaazhvathillai"
(Kulam, kothiram, thoZhil ellathayum rende varila
criticise panraar).
Again Anandaum, I have no intention of offending, antogonising you or anyone in this thread. Intention is not to drag everyone into a post war. Sollanum endru thoniyathu, sollitten.
Sorry for any mistakes

Hi,
Chitra and Vani are two of the finest singers of today. Chitra stands out for the sheer feminity of her voice where as songs with a classical touch are Vani's forte. Vani's great efforts have been in Telugu. I say so becuase, even though she is not a Telugu, she renders the telugu classicals so perfectly well that it leaves in poor light many Telugu singers! I believe if one hears to her "Aanatineeyara Hara....." of K.Viswanath's Swathikiranam he will find it difficult to keep his praise for her to himself. It will be unfair to compare these two with PS or SJ. Because all of them served the cause of Indian music to their strength in their times. The same way a coparison between Chitra and Vani is also unfair. Because Chitra has come up with the light music, where as Vani has come up with classical type. God bless them so that they can render greater services to the Indian music. After all haven't they proved that music knows no language!!

My personal opinion of the GREAT three..
Chithra has an uncanny knack of hitting the right notes and is therefore able to communicate the nuances of a tune in totality to the listener. Her drawbacks IMO are at times her voice thins down thereby depriving the song of any impact. Her improvisations and sangathis sometimes appear to have been introduced forcibly (It does not come with the flow).
SJ in a comfortable pitch can sing the way nobody else can with her expressions and classy improvisations (listen to "intha mandrathil odi varum"). Her drawbacks...sounds screechy & irritating while touching higher notes , introduces unnecessary twists and turns that ruin the mood of the song.
PS , the lady with the ultimate voice,a base voice ,a voice with such depth for a lady and without the slightest loss of melody. Her songs (atleast during her peak period) always created the impact because of the volume of her voice, intuitive singing and the right expressions. TFM listeners should listen to some of her Telegu, Malayalam and Kannada hits . She sounds more melodious IMO than she did in Tamil primarily because she sang at a slightly lower pitch in these languages (Don't know why..probably TMS?). Her drawbacks are that I feel that she at times goes off-key. Comments Please...

Additionally, I think PS had a greater sense of poetry and and IMO a better taste in poetry than the other two. Final conclusion...Chitra though great is not the greatest. My personal favourite is PS.
