SJ were certainly the most prolific and best MD's of their time. They were responsible for the most number of hits during their reign at the top. I think they can certainly match up to Illyaraja in terms of quality, quantity and versatality. If Jaikishan hadn't passed away in 71, they would have definetly ruled over RDB, LP or any other challenge that would have come their way in the future. They were legends and were very excellent. What do you guys think ??

in my melodious opinion i think no one can touch either mohammed rafi or shanker jaikishan. i like LP KA AS WELL.
YE MERA PREM PTRU PATKAR FROM SANGAM is a greatest hit of all time.

I guess picking a favorite MD is a very personal aand talking about him is a veru emotional issue (at least thats how it seems in this thread).
Having said that, let me add that I hail from a family of SJ buffs and been listening to them since I stepped into this world and simply loved their music since then.
For those of you may not be aware of this, LP started out with them only. L used to play mandolin and yet, the best mandolin uses have mentions of SJ only. Add Accordian, Piano, Musigan (I hope the spelling is correct), violin, Flute, dholak etc to it. And the list is endless.
Infact listen to their music and u'll realize the myriad ways in which a instrument can be used.
There're more words than "melody" alone that are needed to express their music in words.
Their range is simply amazing. And mind you, the only MDs that deserve the credit of bring "Orchestra" to HF's are SJ.
I guess, that gets amply reflected that almost ever coming HF MD says that SJ inspires him.
And I simply love knack of identifying new talents and give them suitable songs. I think, some (read most) of the best songs of Talat, Manna Dey etc are composed by them only. I guess, that's the reason of breaking up with Lata.
They were simply much ahead of their times.
Finally, I don't expect MD in India, whose 3 day show can collect in 7 figures.
Well, SJ did it long back in 1964.
Call it good Music or Appealing music.

Things go with the time and as such, during my younger days when I was around 15,I was thrilled and even today I feel Shankar jaikishan duo did the very best and no one could match for the catchy and memorable tunes.Of course, the other genius who still lives as a legend is the great Naushad whose songs from Dillagi ,Anmolgadi could never be igonored.
A person becomes passionate by the time and not by the generation since the taste and style changes .For instance,I like very much Nadeem and shravan in hindi ,IR in tamil and Manisharma in telugu.
One should not compare the popularity since the time keeps changing and also the taste for music.
Melody was reigning earlier but now only catchy time pass songs are mostly composed although we get some good tunes in between, not to offend anyone.
This is my personal view.

shankar-jaikishan duo is the best i think . msv-rammurhty was in south. it is not so important to compare sj with illayaraja. raja enterd industry after jai died. so no question of compitition.they are masters in their own capacity

kala, different approaches for the same genre. s-j gave difficult compositions which generally was not the case with msv-tkr (who gave very pleasing melodies), though msv by himself became a different and unbeatable maestro. but,in those days i would say kvm was far superior than most composers in hindi in bringing out carnatic based complex melodies for tfm.
IR is in a very advantagesious position as he saw what all was done and what all needed to be done by not doing what was already done. such that likes of Rahman etc.. now have to be extraordinarily innovative and that is why you can't see a challenge to IR even today, not likely in the near future. though, i expect some really extraordinarily talented composers in the future if a really stable and highly competitive climate comes back in India - but for now in the digital age, where anybody can make music in thier kitchen and get away with any crap, we won't see any resurgence in creativity. But, definitely IR' prowess will inspire a musical renaissance in the distant future throughout India and the world, but it will be based entirely on carnatic music. - that is the glorious revelation of IR.

Listening to songs composed by SJ gives you the height of glory of Hindi music.......
There were many other giants like Naushad, S.D.Burman, O.P.Nayyar, Madan Mohan etc and all
of these undoubtedly composed quality music, but SJ virtually dominated the face of hindi film music till Jaikishan's death......
I can see detoriation in the quality of music being composed today.....it feels like fast food..I would request all young music lovers to
listen to songs composed by the yesteryears composers and feel the difference!!!!!
