Hi guys,
I strongly believe that this song is surely the best of the vintage collections that we have from 2001. I hear the song atleast 30 times a day,... Due to some reason it really touches the soul of the listener, especially the starting combo of humming and the violin. I just want to try to ask some person who have no idea of tamil to listen to this song, and guess what this tune conveys.

The song from rAja pArvai goes 'pani vizhum pozhuthinil iru vizhi nanainthathu netru'.
I love this bit song.
Other prayer oriented bit songs I love are 'innaru tharum chimma vaahini' from 'aathama', and 'ara hara shankara' from Bharathi. This song was not in the album.
Of other MDs, ARR's 'anbendra mazhayile' from Minsaara Kanavu is a good one.

Thanks koothan, I have the tune and the first word in my head...'pani vizhum pozhuthinil iru vizhi nanainthathu netru' is a great song indeed.

Anand, I was mainly talking about the tune..IR has many similiar sounding songs..didnt find too much novelty in this..the rest of the songs to me were pretty medicore sounding..

UVII, I think I will this CD just for this song alone. I am kinda busy at work and at home. How is the recording ? I thought the levels for the instruments were more than what IR prefers normally. But I am happy almost all songs have real instruments.
Now coming to what vijay mentioned, about IR singing - I think it is his singing which makes the song special. These days IR seems to be just singing parts of the songs. IMHO, he really knows how to use the singer in IR.

Apart from Undan Rajiyathil, are any of the songs listed by UVII available on the net?
Has anyone noticed the great chorus interlude in one of the song in the movie Metti. Its the song when Rajesh & Radhika sing in a scene with indian & caucasian 'aiyars' on board a train. Great fusion of christian & hindu chant & music. Its very short...but juz way too beautiful & mesmerizing.

"These days IR seems to be just singing parts of the songs. IMHO, he really knows how to use the singer in IR. "
Or perhaps he has learnt that singing full songs isnt going to take him anywhere :-))
Frankly IR using himself and Bhava in songs has irritated me more recently. I still cant digest that he chose Bhava to sing "Alai Meedhu vilayadum", a potential classic from Kaadhal Kavithai..It smacks of blatant favouritism..
But I do agree that him using natural instruments in this album was a pleasant change from the current trend and it reminded us all of vintage IR music..

IR does not have to worry about going anywhere..he has gone where nobody else had gone before (musically speaking).
IMHO, people have to write, tune and sing the songs themselves..this is popular music where bhAvam is more important than sruthi perfection..There will be some depth to the lyrics as well as some individuality..using lyric writers we can 'factory' made plastic poems. Ofcourse, we have a good poetic tradition so we are not at all doing that bad..but I am looking forward to 'Azhagi' just for this..

"IMHO, people have to write, tune and sing the songs themselves"
they can do that as long as they have decent singing capabilities..I dont have any problems with that :-))
And shruthi perfection is as important as bhavam..A guy who loses sruthi here and there wouldnt be able to hold a listener's attention as much as a guy who's perfect shruthi wise but doesnt possess as much bhavam..If shruthi perfection wasnt that important then most of us could have been singers..:-)

I have seen Carnatic music aficianados comment about the singing abilities of major rock stars. There is some balance required. I was only talking about the popular music market. You can draw the line per your preference. Or be smug about your opinions!!

"I have seen Carnatic music aficianados comment about the singing abilities of major rock stars. There is some balance required"
If Subbudu comments on the way Britney Spears is singing, yes I agree there is some imbalance there :-)) but as far as TFM is concerned, where most of the songs are raga-based and the songs are heavily rooted in carnatic music and MDs boast of inventing new ragas or composing songs in ragas that have never been done before there is no harm in expecting them to adhere to shruthi..and adhering to shruthi doesnt necessarily mean singing only carnatic based songs to perfection..and FYI, It applies to any song in general..even the so called rock stars, if they go offkey in a song it would sound absurd..if you think adhering to shruthi is required is required only in songs like Narumugaiye or Ennavale you are having a misconception..
The bottomline is its an individual's preference. For a discerning ear IR's singing would sound not-so-pleasant at places..and the last time I checked the "popular market" you are referring to still prefers Hariharan, SPB, Unnikirishnan etc. to IR, Bhavathaarini etc. :-))
and I dont know who's being smug and failing to see facts clearly here :-))

shruthi perfection is music, singing without proper shurthi is "PAvam" (both the listeners and the singers :) rather than bhavam etc.,
bhavadharani survives by the goodwill earned by IR in the past., simply he has every right to pass it on his daughter.

Sorry But I didnt get any indication from you that you had got my point earlier..rather I thought that you felt that I was being rather smug when all I was doing was trying to explain the facts..and I dont know what point you are trying to make still when all your points have been refuted already..
