TFM really took a turn with the arrival of this duo to the field. While TFM has been in existence before Viswanathan-Ramamoorthy, it is after their debut that TFM really kicked off.
Songs pre-VR suffered an early death even by the 60s, whereas VR songs are most popular even today, some 40 years later.
Added to their success story is the fact that nearly ALL their songs became popular and still remain so. This is no mean achievement with no other MD having ever reached their success rate.
Let us use this thread to recollect, remininse and celebrate this great duo and their contributions to TFM.
Hope to get interesting quips from knowledgeable people like Manisegaran, Sathya Keerthi, Saravanan, Uthaya, OISG etc etc.

Thangaikkaga had a TMS-SJ duet too 'Unnai thedi varum' filmed on Sivaji & Nirmala. The female duet is by PS-LRE that goes 'Azhagae neeyoru'.' Vellikizhamai' had Saibaba's voice along with LRE.

Two more SPB earlier songs 'Endru Mudal Selvam Edhu..' and 'Kelvi ketkum neramalla edu' (Jaishankr movie?)
Also, 'Mullillaa Rojaa' is also good from Moondru Deivangal

Nagarajan, both are from Veetukkoru Pillai-1971.
Jai & Usha Nandini, directed by TR Ramanna. 'Indru mudhal selvamithu' by SPB-Vasantha and 'Kelvi ketkkum neramalla idhu'-SPB-SJ-both lovely songs.

agreed subbu, but then what is that B & W sivaji movie that is gnawing my brain- which had an SPB song.

Usha Nandini with Jai in 1971 ? I thought she did only with Sivaji in Manithanum Deivamaglam,Poonunjal and Rajapart Rangadurai around 1973-74.
TR Ramanna - Was it by MSV?LAter Ramanna moved to Darapuram sunder Rajan in Neechal Kulam/Meendum Vaazhven right?

OISG- I saw Veetukkoru Pillai (Yes, by MSV)on TV some 4 years back when I was in Chennai. UN was the heroine- it was quite a good film in colour, with Jai up in arms against the scheming G Varalakshmi.
Meendum Vaazhven was also by MSV- it had a great SPB-LRE duet ‘Velli muthukkal nadanamaadum’. TRR was the only director to give a fair chance to TKR too- Naan, Moondrezhuthu and Thangachurangam remain among TKR’s best efforts. TRR worked with TR Papa too- Marupiravi & Vairam.
Vengayam, I am trying to think if some Sivaji b&w film of that time in which SPB sang, but only colour films come to mind- SES, Raja, Gauravam, Uthaman, Sivakamiyim Selvan--. In Babu, there is a song 'Enna solla enna solla'-SPB-LRE, but the song didn't feature Sivaji. Are you referring to ‘Enga veetu thanga theril indha matham thiruvizha’ (in the lines of Gun guna rahen hai bhavre) from Arunodhayam?

Yes saravanan that is the song-so arunodhayam was in colouris it. probably i bracketed it as thangaikkaga and last night as nirai kudam(mukta films script by cho which was definitely a b & W movie)
Veetukoru pillai was the not so sucessful remake of the Hindi super duper hit Sawan baadhon stg Navinnischa(o)l & Rekha!
TKR 's moondrezhuthu was a disaster music wise epitomised by the pettikule seval song! Ugh
The nagesh - manorama tiff had something to do with Mrs Regina Nagesh being involved in some court case & nagesh wanting Manorama to testify as a n alibi or something. Manorama flatly refused or so the grapewine goes. That is why manorama started pairing more with the likes of Suruli, Thengai .

Vengayam, no-no- Arunodhayam was B & W, I think.
Moondrezhuthu had a great PS song (with humming by Ponnuswami)- Kaathalan vandhaan--
I too remember reading abt. that case. Anyway, I think they have made peace now- when Manorama was felicitated last year for being awarded the Padmasri, Nagesh was among the main speakers-'Aachi, neenga saadhichiteenga' - he said emotionally.

Pettiyile may not be an impressive tune but the use of Ma2 was very good.Visu-TKR tried the Pratimadhyama raga (Is it Sumaneesa Ranjanai ??) for Suddha Dhanyasi in some of their songs. That was indeed a novelty those days.
Moonderzhuthu was good as a thriller with RaviC doing a Jai and JL was in her usual gorgeous self. The treasure would have been hidden in the town "Kamuthi" (read backwards you get Thi Mu Ka).thengai would mention this in the movie.
Saravanan ,
TRR used IR too for KanniTheevu starring Jai and Seema? The Hindi villain Ranjit played the villain.
Marupiravi is a hot one even by todays standards.Vairam -my alltime favourite JL movie!

OISG, Munrezhuthu was no doubt breezy but the mayya karuthu was simply kathula poo. Imagine Major telling ravi " iruttula pala mani neram ponathalayum naan romba kuzhambi ponathalayum oor per enakku gnabagamillai aanal antha perai munru nanbargallukku thapalil ezhudi potutten or some suchthing. " His mind was calm & clear enough to remember three addresses of his friendas but he could not remember a three lettered town. If This isn't seviyil pushpam, tell me one!
But to TN Balu's credit he made it work for you till I pointed it out!!

What is TRR -TN Balu connection?story,Script & Dialogue ? True! There was enough Pushpam to fool me ,a vidalai school boy mesmerised by JL!Watched this in 1978 in our village KottAAyi.
TNBalu made some commercial hits like "Sattam En Kayil" later and some Jai movies.

Earlier we had a thread where we discussed Visu-Ramu in the light of Hindi/Tamil remakes and their songs. Can we revive the facts of VR s works in that area?
Visu was almost 10 years younger to Ramu? That s a news!

OISG, yes TN Balu was associated with TRR as the thirai kadai man. TN Balu's movie for me for Odi Vilayadu thatha . I was mad about Sripriya then.:-)

Posted this here as I can't see where else to post this piece of news.
Since we are talking of the Golden Age of TFM; we are taken to an earlier age - that of the earliest age of Indian FM. Anil Biswas the pioneer of orchestrated FM in India died yesterday at the age of 89. He scored his first movie in 1934. Naushad, C.Ramachandra (who compsed for the movie Jayakodi) and many others have worked with him sometime or the other. His most famous number of course is the Mukesh number of 1949 - Dil Jalta Hai to jalne do. Mukesh did a successful imitation of Saigal to hit big time.

Nagarajan- I have the SPB-LRE song 'Vellimuthukkal nadanmaadum' alone. It is a good song, with LRE in her bindaas best, and a young SPB, with female chorus voices adding beauty to the composition.

Pennathur:
Thanks for posting this link regarding Anil Biswas. His death is a great loss to the music world. I wonder, though, how many people even remember him. And I even wonder if people remember any of the composers of the 40s, 50s or care for their music, given that the hype surrounding RD Burman and Ilayaraaja is so intense!

I am happy to see a link to my fav. music composers - VR. I rate them just below SDBurman in the Indian film music MD list, just a shade, mind you, that's all. I rate them above everyone else - O P Nayyar, Naushad, Shanker-Jaikishen etc. for their versatile compositions. No other Indian MD has given so many variety of songs. I don't think any other MD has used the violins as efficiently or effectively as VR. And nadaswaram and Shehnai? Outstanding. Piano. Beautiful - Prime example the PS song Enna Enna Varthaigalo in film: Vennira Aadai.
And they have also composed ghazals (sonnathu neethana of PS for example), Qaawalis (Thangacchi Onne Onnu Talayenna Aduthu in Karuppupanam). Westernised carnatic songs. Truly an outstanding reportaire. Most of their songs are immortal. Unfortunately the TFM fans, who praise IR and the rest of the lot who came after him, do not seem to remember the VRs, the KVMs, the GRs, the SMS, the Sudarsanams or the S V Venkatramans etc. That's the pity.
