Dear Ravi,
I am happy to receive a compliment of that sort. Please put forward you topics of discussion so that we may go into the depths of our IR compositions with our friends.

Murali Sankar ..I too was thinking of KennyG and IR man ..
(BTW, KR Ravi thanks for the encouragement. I am also looking into some software to dehiss the CDs which I have - I hate Oriental Records. Yesterday I tried out DartPro but the wave file it created could not be read by other players I have emailed them about this. I have also downloaded DC Art Pro another audio restoration software. But yet to check it out)
I think we are discussing a very big business opportunity here. I wish I could capitalise on this.
Again, I want to know one thing. Who holds the copyright on the IRs movie songs ?? Somebody please let me know this ASAP.

Murali,
No problem. This weekend I will talk to my CD dealer in Toronto. He is the distributor for Canada for most labels and he is friends with all the film industry people.

Hi Mastero Ilayaraja Fans:
Add me as one of the fanatic listeners of Ilayaraja. FYI: I came across some outstanding Ilayaraja's songs in Actor Prabu's 100th Film: "Sindhunathi-Pooh". I think they got over shadowed by recent AR Rahman's hits. In this movie, I was especially intrigued by one song "aadi-varattum-mayilakkhalai..". This was composed in a Symphony sytle and it sounds like one of Beethoven's symphonies, with lot of layers of horn and clarinet. The second one: "Sithahathi-pookkalae" is also excellent. After a long time I think Ilayaraja gave a sweet one. Both songs have excellent interludes that are very melodious and perky at the same time. I strongly recommend to you to listen to these.
Additionally, I recommend Ilayaraja's fans to listen to popular pieces of Mozart, Vivaldi (like four seasons), Bach (Brandenberg concertos) and so on. The reason: you will find the patterns of music often used by Ilayaraja is very analogous to that used by these great musicians in many of their symphonies and concertos, but with his own melody, rhythm and a perky twist! I don't know how he does that!. You probably would agree with me, after some listening that the Mastero's musical skills are very comparable to these composers.
Finally, let me introduce myself as one of the constant listeners of Ilayaraja. He has certainly brought me the great joy of enjoying his music. I am now settled in US as Associate Professor. But I can't resist listening to his songs over and over again-sort of obsessed with it!
By the way Could some friend help me indetify one of Ilayaraja's song that is obscure (because the move I think never made to the screen). The song goes like "Kodi Yinbam Mheni yenghum saintha-tham-mamma; sweety yendru peraichonnal.." and so on. Please let me know which movie it was. It probably came in early 80's. I would very much appreciate the help.

Ravi
Hello! As you said IR has got a much better flavor to the orchestral styles of Bach, Beethoven, Mozart, etc.
BTW, is that Prabhu film a very recent one. When was it released?
The Kodi Yinbam song you are referring to was composed for i think 'Manipoor Mammiyar' which was a never released film. I used to follow this song on Ilankai Olivarappu Koottusthapanam!
Regards

Hi:
Thanks for the response. I do not know when the movie was released. But I have the cassette saying that the songs are from this movie "Sindhunathi-Pooh". Movie produced by Kunjumon. The cassette is produced by Pyramid (No. PYR 8161). I picked up from a store in Cincinnati. I recommend to buy the CD. In the same movie, the third song, "Kattilae, Kambanghattilae" also is good.
I doubt that "Kodi Yinbum" song is from Manippoor Mamiyar. I have all the songs from that movie. May be (vaguely remember) it is from a movie titled "Nenjil Aadum Pooh Ondrhu". But I would like someone to confirm it or correct it. Additionally, a movie directed by Mahendran, "Pootatha Poottukkal (locks left unlocked!)" had many wonderful songs, but never made it to screen!. There is a chance that the song that I refer to, is from this movie. But I could be wrong.
Another request: In ManiRathnam's first movie, "Paghal Nilavu", the song that is played during the title (at the end of the movie), "Poohvilae Medai Naan Podavaa" is another excellent piece. I am looking for a CD recording of it. If anyone knows the CD in which it appeared please let me know.
Finally, I think some of Mastero's early songs are poorly recorded, so those original LPs, if available may be worth buying I think.
I also would like to float a thought: Since many of the best of IR's songs are in mono and poorly recorded (at that time), why not IR rerecord these songs, since I believe he might have the notes at storage. Especially when we have now complete digital recording, his early songs can be easily taken far beyond that we have experienced. This is inview of my feeling that Rahman's success is not only because of his talent (he has very good potential I must admit) but because of the use of Digital recording and the use of the technique of three or four layers of recording with his electronics instruments. But IR is completely organized (in the Western sytle) and notes and timing are given to each instrumetalist. IR records the whole song usually in one shot (after rehearsal). That is the thing I am constantly amazed by IR. It seems he has a complete mental picture of the rhythm, melody and the notes and timing of each instrument in his mind and all of it mostly comes out at one time! Plus he overseas recording levels during the song recording! Any thoughts?
Thanks for the fans for keeping up IR's admiration. Please continue the discussion with whatever you know about him. Sorry if I have written too much here, but I thought may be informative.

Ravi,
I have totally agree with you IRs style is classical. Basically, he arranges and conducts an orchestra (for most songs). Only lately I have realised this and have started listening to Classical masterpieces from the Great composers.
You are right about rerecording IRs songs. Actually, I am wondering whether it would be possible to digitally remaster the old analog tapes in which he originally recorded. Please join us in the 'We too can sponsor an IR album' thread. We are discussing the very same thing. You contribution will be very helpful to all of us.
(Also, I would NOT hesitate to compare IR with the Great composers but IR is caught in the commerical world. Ofcourse, we all make compromises maybe he did this because it is the only way he can get his music across to the people).

hi!! is ravi ,k.s.ravichandran, talking about "rajakumaran"??
it is prabhu's 100th film and the songs that he mentioned come
in it. prabhu didn't star in sindhu nadhi poo. it had awful music.
in rajakumaran, apart from the songs ravichandran mentioned, there is an absolute gem. it is "ennavendru solvadhamma, vanji aval perazhagai". sung by SPB. only SPB can do it. and this film came quite some time ago(immediately after uzhavan , i think). it lead to comparisons between the song in uzhavan "pennalla pennalla rojaappo" and the song "ennavendru".

Prabhu did n't act in "Sindhu nathi poo". "chithakathi pookale" is in Rajakumaran by prabhu, nadhiya etc.But it is a good song.
"sindhu nathi poo"'s music is by Vidyasagar.

I think IR himself told that he only holds copyright of all his songs.

Ravichandran,
There was an article about how IR composes music in other thread. Hope you might have seen it. Its a worth reading.
http://www.tfmpage.com/forum/10823.18.02.15.html
He is definitely genius and it is amazing to see how he could come with tunes in 45 minutes(Solla Marantha Kathai was composed in 45 minutes it seems).
But I have one complain against him. Why he is not taking some more time to concentrate on every details of a song and give irresistable album these days?
