KANNADASAN is a sheer genius. With simple words he could conjure wonderful songs. He never compromised on the quality of lyrics for any MD like VM who was writing figure figuredhan, muqabala type of songs..

Here is a situation where a little kid (Sridevi) asks the hero (Sivaji) 'deivam na enna?'. Look at this beautiful song written by our great kavignar, explaining what is or where is God ...
(Movie: Babu, Year: 1971)
idho enthan deivam munnaalE
naan ore oru punnagaiyil kandEnE

We see so many situations in movies where the hero tease the heroine.
Here is one situation in nizhal nijamagirathu for which Kannadasans pens:
kamban aemaandhaan - ilam kanniyarai oru malar enraanae karpanai seydhaanae kamban aemaandhaan
ambu vizhi enru aen sonnaan adhu paayvadhinaal thaanoa arunjuvaip paalena aen sonnaan adhu kodhippadhanaal thaanoa

(kamban)
valluvan ilangoa baaradhi enroru

A person who communicates his feelings to the audience(unarchigal) in a creative medium (like lyrics, music, painting) is an artiste..A person who creatively gives what the audience wants is a businessman/seller..kannadhAsan is an artiste ..vairamuthu has become a businessman..a seller of wares.. Going by the current trend in the movie industry..artistes are a dying breed..only the sellers thrive !!!
(Thanks for those profound lyrics of kannadhAsan..a person has lived well when people miss him.. and I miss the man !!)

But I am wondering is survival a problem for VM too? An established singer like him need not compromise. Though i agree what he wants is his call and I cant say what he should or should not do.....
I think VM writes songs like "take it easy" and "50 kg TajMahal" because he thinks that is what is trend....
BTW I would liked to hear comments about "Ullaththil nalla ullam" and "maranththai enni kalangum vijaya" songs from Karnan. I was touched by the words "kannane kattinan...kannane thankkinan....kannane kolai seigindran...."

I genuinely believe that this thread is mainly dominated by people over 45 (or average age over 45) and only making comments about what really affected them when they were young. Therefore they argue that the person who is no longer there in still living & person who is still living is dead (no consideration for the person who is living now when dead in 40 years would still be living for many years). Other thing I have noticed here is that they pick up worst VM's songs & compare it against Kanadasan I conclude how superior kanadasan is. Person who does things for his own satisfaction is artiste & businessman/seller would do things primarily for others (best example is IR & ARR ). So in this commercial world many artistes turn into business for the sake of survival & opportunists.

ilakkaNam mAruthO
ilaakkiam aanathO
ithu varai nadithathu athu enna vEdam
ithu enna paadam
This song is also from Nizhal Nijamaagirathu. This is about the sweet changes happening in a hard hearted girl... I like the first two lines that perfectly match the situation, also the way words are handled..
ilakkaNam mAruthO
ilaakkiam aanathO
BTW Kiru, I fully agree with you.. Like you and many others I too miss Kannadhasan. For me no day passes without listening or at least remember few lines of his immortal songs..

i think it's wrong to compare vairamuththu with kaNNadhAsan. besides the HUGE difference in their talent, comprehension of human emotions, and knowledge of thamizh, their work modalities were orthogonal. when one "read" kaNNAdhasan's pAdalkaL one is hooked on to them not just by their meaning, by even their structure (chandham). i think, this was primarily due to the fact kaNNadhAsan wrote most of his songs before the tune was set while vairamuththu is forced to fit words to the preset tunes. therefore, not taking in to consideration things like talent and knowledge, but only this work modality in to account is is only fair to compare vairamuththu with later days vAli, t. rAjEndar, arivumathi, mu. mEthA, pazhanibhArathi. imo, even in this group, vairamuththu takes the back seat.

aruLaracan..good technical point about chandam. Do you think vairamuthu has done some impressive stuff outside films or do you think he will do well if given an opportunity to write the lyrics first ? I am not so sure.
Not just one poster here..but quite a few think that only the old appreciate kannadhasan !! Gawd ..vairamuthu himself is old ..actually he was in full flow (way better than today) in my impressionable years/teens..so I should be nostalgic about him more than the just-out-of-college people. Even the wiz kid who makes 'cool music' is older (a little) than me :) ..In order to appreciate kannadhAsan you just have to listen..yeah just dont HEAR the music..LISTEN to it !!!

Kiru... i still believe VM has more maNvAsanai :))) that is there in most of his songs..poorveega patRu :) his "kaLLikAttu ithigAsam" is testimonial to that... Don't miss it...

Do you think vairamuthu has done some impressive stuff outside films
i have a distate for the form of pudhukkavidhai. the only pudhikkavidhais i like are those of abdul rahman's. vairamuththu's pudhukkavidhai-s are just glamorous, all imho. a couple of years ago, he wrote a veNpA thodar in kumudam. there was one issue in which he wrote about AIDS. that was good (though, i remember some to be not in resonance with my political leaning :-) ). otherwise, i think of him to be a mediocre kavignar.
do you think he will do well if given an opportunity to write the lyrics first ? as you said, i am not so sure.
talking about the age of those appreciate kaNNadhAsan ... :-) i was not even a teenager when nizhalkaL was released :-)). i remember how i (and one of my mAmAs) used to listen to the sunday 4-6 nEyar viruppam on Madras A radio and wait for pon mAlai pozhudhu to come up. well... good old days :-) . after a couple of years, vairamuthtu algorithms were easy to understand and i lost interest in him. i was so impressed by his "manmadhan ampukaL thaiththa iTangkaLil chandhanamAy enaip pUcukiREn". once kAnchanA told me that vairamuthtu mentioned in one of his speeches that like kaNNadhAsan he too has brought ilakkiyam down to the pAmaran and quoted this line. apparently, the original is in nandhik kalampalam! oh well! the one thing i had respect for him was also not his :-(.

Those who appreciate Kannadhasan more than VM need not be in late forties or fiftees. I am 31 and I know many of my classmates like KD more than VM.
