Neels, Ghai Bhai is under some delusion of grandeur. He even tried hard to rope in IR and IR turned down the film in the last minute at the advice of Kamal. Now I understand why. Ghai Bhai likes to interfere a lot I believe and that IR does not entertain, even if the director is Spielberg (who the posting says is now going after Deva) It is very posible Su ghai composed the Taal with the help of ARR and not the other way around.

Hi,
Sangamam :
Shankar Mahadevan has done an awesome job in his song "Varaga Nadhikkarai".S.Janaki and Unni combination has worked well in the song "Margazhi Thingal" basically set to Sindu Bairavi ragam. I think it is one of the few times ARR has used Sindu Bhairavi .The next song by HH-MSV combination is very familiar to some other song which I'm unable to place. But it makes for good listening .The Nithyasree song and the Srinivas-Sujatha duet have not yet made an impact on me since I'm writing this after my first hearing of the album .I think it is quite a decent buy .

I listened to 'maargazhi thingaL' , 'mazhai thuLi' and 'muthal murai' . 'Maargazhi' is excellent melody and a catchy tune too. ARRish!. 'Mazhai thuLi' would impact after a few good listenings. I haven't found any problem with MSV's high pitch pisurus, but i have listened to it only once. I will come back with a detailed review.

listened to sangamam and taal song clips. they seem to be good.. felt a vague familiarity, but not much:) nithyashree's rendition has vastly improved and this song is much much better than the way she sang in padayappaa. kadhri chipping in usefully. didn't pay attention to lyrics, will come back to them later..

after a long while, an album worth talking about from ARR. in sangamam, our young genius has not done anything extraordinary, but compared to his recent thagaradappa music, this one's GOOD! especially varaga nathikkarai. other songs are ok, but like all ARR albums, i guess this one will also grow on one. so let me listen to it for a couple of weeks.

This one is devoid of all western noise.
It was a good listen and A.R.Rahman has done well to bring in the maestro of mellisai MSV in this new album. Shankar Mahadevan song transport one to the 50's and it was very nice.

kaNNil varum kAtchiyellAm (varAga nathikkarai Oram) from sangamam is an excellent , melodious , dharga type song, though its tune somewhat resembles 'kaNNilantha piLLaikku theivam thantha dharisanam' from 'yaenip padigaL!

IMO on Sangamam:
Maargazhi is very pleasing and a laudable output from ARR. It is set in sindhu bhairavi. For me the usage of violins seem to remind me of IR's. Now that IR is not interested very much in giving us good stuff, I will take this song with glee.
Mazhaithuli:
Hey, this reminds of IR's trademark dappa. Hey ARR, don't you have a national appeal ? How is it that you have started composing mainly for the South Indians ? Anyway good to hear it, though not very great.
Muthal murai:
A beautiful vocal prelude from Sujatha ( I belive). What a great song if it had been devoid of the empty unaccompanied beats creeping in the middle! A classic from ARR. Dear ARR, please give us something like this and refrain from "padayappa - dappa" stuff.
Varaga nathi:
Shankar Mahadevan starts with nasal tones. somehow "kannil varum kaatchi" just reminded me of " Vaishnavo jan". A good song from ARR. Shankar Mahadevan has to work on his tamil pronunciation and accentuation. He sings the song on and on and ..(like breathless)
Sowkyamaa:
Very well. This takes us to Narumugaiye tunes ("Sembulan serntha"). Nithya, please sing in tamil when lyrics are in tamil. A pleasing song.
On the whole as claimed by others it is a good buy. It is not bound to infuriate listeners like padayappa.
A great album for HCArrFs.
A good album for "objective guys" (like me)
A recycled album for HCIRFs
:-)
NOM to anybody.

'muthal murai' is very close to 'pani mazhai megangal pozhigindra varaiyil thirukkural padikkattuma'(a 70s song by GKVenkatesh)
'sowkkiyama'chitra might have done a great job.

I agree with you. Chitra WOULD have done a great job! But mm...did anyone notice that NithyaShree sung the song funny. I am referring to her tamil. I don't know but I found it really wierd. But I only heard the song once properly, so I will get back on that...

I did read through before as soon as I saw your posting. But it wasn't that. I don't understand it myself. I am not talking about how bad her tamil is. It's just that she sounded like she was singing some other language. I am serious, here. On my first listening, I was suddenly struck by the thought that the song didn't sound like tamil all of the sudden. Let me listen a couple of more times(if I can get through that) and write back what it was.

But then, she did sing in Tamil. That's what's confusing? I wonder what happenned to her. I mean 'kanodu kanbathelaam' song was very good. I meant the singing. I think the lyricist was not present in the studio at the time so ARR had to teach her the words.

mArgazhi & varAga nadhi are really good.
Rest are so so. lyrics is as usuall awfull [Especially in "muthal murai" - kaNNukkuL vErththEn-veppam-karpam blah blah and this song boasts of real tharadabbA interludes]

I just got Taal and listened to all the 11 pieces (7 songs, 2 intrumental and 2 repeats). I am at loss for words. I feel a lot for ARR. Here is the arrival of abstract music and musical from with the greatest intervention from Subash Ghai. Except for the title number, the rest of the 9 pieces are music of a entirely different thought process for a music composer. None of the songs made me go back to explore a second time and figure out what was happening. There were no new sounds, no innovative phrases. Neither did the songs seems contrived. But, it makes you feel that Ghai departed totally from tuneful music or he was attempting to herald a new age of abstract film music. Notable thing is that most of the songs do not have interludes!
Compared to this, KD can be heard a second time! Does anyone else share the same opinion regarding Taal?
