sts is correct. i remember reading that ir refused hey ram as it was supposed to be against gandhi. i also heard that jeyedra saraswathi and t.k.pattammal refused to be associated with that movie.
may be kamal changed the script later and convinced others that the movie does not have any anti-gandhi views.

illayaraja is going through a lean patch and none of his films of late have attracted people's eyes. his last good song was in kadhaluk mariyadai. it was really outstanding. But illayaraja has get back the big banners and offer us unique melody. by changing his established singers, he has put his own music down

No way lah guys!!!!!
Raja won't down.He is the back bone for music industries. If there is no raja then we still have to hear hindi songs.Raja is the person who transfer hindi market to tamil. He is the genius which nobody can match.IR is always will be the best ever was and ever will be.IR is still doing well in TFM and already do well too in Hindi film music. For example Lajja music. So don't talk rubbish.

rf,
As i had said earlier...the movie has to be seen to appreciate the BG Score...
OK, if u want comparisons, well, remember the riot
scenes of hey ram ??
U can find such brilliant peices during the chase
sequences in the climax. The Chorus is at its best
in two places...One which wud make Jerry Goldsmith
proud is the scene where jackie shroff's attempt
to murder ajay devgan fails and Ajay devgan's reaction to it...The chorus is awesome..
A stroke of Raja's genius can be seen during the chant "jai mata.." where it starts off with a Indian classical mode and by the time it ends u realize it's shifted to the WC mode and the shift is seamless !
During the first two stories the BG score is subdued as the scenes are dialogue oriented...
But I'm not sure if the hindi audience can appreciate the subtle scores as they are used to the SAME stupid violin pieces (the ones u find in Ramayan and mahabharat serials and all the hindi movies (except those of arr, raja & deva (!) ) )
If aamir had watched the movie with an open mind, he wud've regretted for not having given the BG Score part to Raja !
PS: Am not trying to take a dig at arr...

Now, with some good reviews for Lajja BGM, can we expect IR to think of release of his RPO symphony?:-)

By looking at the lyrics, 'Kasi' songs likely to be below average.

Lajja's music will stand out minimally and only to a certain extent, it is a product that shows effort and sincerity, but its stand out comes from Ilyaraja and Prashoon who compose and pen Lata Mangeshkar's "Kaun Dagar." Lata sings effortlessly yet still sounds as good as she did ages ago. Perhaps mandatory when singing for a Raj Kumar Santoshi films, Kaun Dagar is along the lines of what Rahman created in Ek Tuhi Bharosa from Pukar. She sounds similar both tracks. The lyrics and composition distinguish the song from the soundtrack and for the most part set a mood to the film.

Music wise, it was obvious that Raj Kumar Santoshi knew what he was doing when he released the soundtrack. The mediocrity in the soundtrack has no affect on the film; in fact music plays a minimal role. Lata Mangeshkar’s “Kaun Dagar, Kaun Shaher” is well interspersed throughout the film. I found it pointless to include the two versions of the “Kalyug Ki Sita” on the soundtrack and not use them in the film. They would have worked and possibly clicked much better on screen and they definitely had appropriate places to work with.
The Hollywood-Bollywood trend continues, even with this film, as the background score by Ilyaraja is really American, and it works! At times it seems out of place, but at others, it is truly a distinguishable positive effect on the movie. The time Santoshi and him have put in surely shows. Cinematography and locations from New York to Uttar Pradesh are a sight for the eyes, especially in Badi Mushkil.

Kaun Dagar
Singer : Lata Mangeshkar
Music : Ilaiyaraaja
Lyrics : Prasoon Joshi
Featured on Rekha..She doesn’t look that hot in this movie. This song is sung beautifully by Lataji & music is nice too but the song is sad! It’s a nice song.

Now, the last no 'Kaun Dagar' has some interesting observations under its sleeves. It is anchored by Dr Ilaiyaraja and the lyricist Prasoon Joshi. It is sung none other than by Lata Mangeshkar , numero uno songstress in this part of the world. The tragedy is why the contemporary music masters are reducing her to sing the residues ? This is totally unjustified. The same is effected previously in the films like 'Lagaan" and "Pukar'

Listen to kutti on raajangahm.com. I really enjoyed chinna maharAni and bhava songs. I hope the songs are longer than what raajangahm has (maybe edited for copyright reasons). rAjA sings chinna mahArAni with a 'lilt' in his voice. Very good ..really good.

Saw Kutti in Toronto last Sunday.
The movie has three songs - chinna maharani and thangachi by Raja and another short song by Bhava.
All songs are used as part of the BGM.
Amazing movie with even better bgm.
I hope to see it again, just for the BGM.

I just felt, that the starting line of chinna maharani is slightly similar to Sri ranga ranganathin paatham, of Mahanadi.

"S", thank u much, i just read ur response. there ia film forum in www.indolink.com i think and lajja has got positive viewer responses, but none of them talked about the bgm, except one who was asking about the name of the composer for the bgm, because he remembered it was budapest symphony and he did not seemed suprised that it was not a hind film composer!!!! so, u r probably very right that Hindi audiences would not know the difference between a sophisticated score as they are not so used to having one. Most of them only talked about the actresses and it tells that if you are screen persona crazy that the technical guys will not be that much noticed!!!!!

S, are you talking of Lagaan? However, Lajja is a Aamir Khan production! So, he must' ve realized that with a big star cast it will be great to bring in IR. It seems Aamir Khan went to Chennai to request IR to do the BGM!!!!

rf .... to add to it, I believe, Aamir Khan had Anu Malik as MD, and guess what, IR couldn't finish a BGM score, for a particular sad scene, and Aamir Khan had Anu Malik score the BGM for that scene. Wow, Anu Malik. :)

kodooramada saami...Lagaan was produced by Aamir khan while Lajja was produced and directed by RK Santoshi. Lagaan doesn't have anything to do with IR except great BGM in his tradition.

When I listen to the song, "Adiraakamma" of thalapati, I get a feel that the initial violin piece, would have been, from KR. If you could hear it, very close, you would find, its not just violins, and has some different instrument, also , keyboard probably, but the same instrument combo is used in "Thesingu raaja" middle violin piece. Something really says, it was KR who did that piece. :).

IsaiAdimai: r u talking of Lajja (IR) or Laagan (ARR). The score for Lajja was completely by IR so where could AM have come in? Or, is it Lagaan you r sagyin that ARR could not do a bgm and AM was asked to do? IR is not that unprofessional to leave a bgm piece for someone else to complete. Pls clarify. Lajja is co-produced by Aaamir Khan, I believe with Santhoshi. But, Lagaan is AK and ARR music only.
