It is really surprising to find people who actually talk so positively about ARR. I have witnessed only bloodbath before in this forum. ARR is a sound engineer etc etc... This forum has become more of a IR fan dominated thing. It can become more open... The line between fan and fanatic is thin I guess. guys, be open to good music...
That apart, I bought sometime back YSR's Rishi & Tenali combo in CD. I guess I wasted my hard-earned (you will know if you are a Poor Indian Graduate Student)$12 in that. But it was because of the hype they created for Rishi, they said it is "aaha oohoa" etc... My god... one song was ok... but the rest were not worth the $12.
I did not really buy it for Tenali because I had seen the movie, and only Swasame was okay. Porkalam was ok too... but anyways... I don't intend to waste $12 on 12ka4 until somebody swears that it is really good (Common Friend, will you?) Same with Dum Dum Dum, it is really that good? I want to buy them assured that my money won't go waste. I cannot really go bby raaga.com, it is difficult (not impossible) for me to get to a high speed connection.
------All comments are IMHO and should not be read out of context. For those who want a dogfight, please pardon me, I don't intend to waste time (mine as well as yours) any more than what should be------

Saketh,
Buy cassettes and then if you like it go about buying Cd's after few months by which there might be a good combo with this film. I wud suggest that this wud be a better way. If you need CD then you take the risk. IF you ask Q's like this in the forum, everyone is bound to give their personal opinion, which you might not agree. BTW, R U doing Ph.D?

Rahul,
If you want proof, read any articles from this (idiot) called Dr. Rajiv vijakar. You can read his articles in screen and dhadkan.com. When ever he mentions about ARR, he never completes the sentence without saying one or two made-up -ve remarks.
The funny thing is, he is hyped up against ARR, he still dreams dilwale duniya se leyange has won filmfare award ( which for good reasons, did not, instead rangeela won). Read his hilarious article on subash ghai musicals in dhadkan, you will know, what I am talking about.
The problem is, whether you accept it or not, people like him, who are abudant in north media, are the reason, why generally people in south have strong opinion about north-bias.
I read another funny review about hey ram. The reviewer said something like 'the customs and people shown in the movie are not suitable for hindi movie". Now for god's sake, if hindi represents the whole india, what is the problem, if hindi film showcases about diffrent parts of india for a change from punjabi and gujarathi customs. Is it too much for asking?.
These kind of close-mindness is still prevalant, and that is what people here are trying to describe.
regards
e.hari

Saketh;
if u have spent your hard-earned money in buying CD's, then the fault is totally on yours. you see people come here with all sorts of opinions. for every movie/songs, there are a set of likers and dislikers......i am yet to understand why you go with only likers view. web sites such as raaga or musicindia or mohan kumar's etc..etc update new songs much earlier before the movie gets released. if you are very intelligent in spending money, then you could have heard these songs atleast twice before buying a CD or casette. hurrying to buy them and crying later is totally your mistake. the more important thing is perception of people. people write their views based on how the songs have impressed them. you buy CD's based on other's impressions. definitely, every one's vary from every other's. so what's the point in getting angry with people for this. your money, you have to spend the way you want...

Saketh never again do the mistake of buying CDs especially the ones by IR/KR/YSR based on the reviews from this forum. Im sure one who burned my
wallet.I stopped doing that for past 1.5 years and i dont regret my decision as none of the albums from these 3 was worth buying(im just talking loud of my musical taste- no offence to other people who loved it).

SR;
FYI, Saketh felt Tenali songs with Rishi sucked so much money. He has written he is not going to do the same mistake for 12ka4. I guess, he has realised once and he is more intelligent now in spending.

Saketh...
Always listen to the songs first at TFM Top 10...I listened to Rishi(not good), Friends(ok), Dheena (better) and decided against buying these albums. Thanks to TFMpage for giving us this opportunity to listen and decide.

You are right about this (idiot) Dr. vijakar..I also used to find his articles incredibly ridiculous... And in that Subhash Ghai's Musicals thing he seemed intent on proving that rahman had nothing to do with Taal's music's success!!!! But I never said there aren't people around who don't like ARR and can go to any extent to pull him down... I only wanted to say that north/south probably has nothing to do with this... its a matter of taste and people have varied tastes... why.. just look at postings on this board itself and you'll find enough Dr. Vijakar's from south who write just as bad about ARR as anybody... so, geography doesn't really matter as much.. Moreover there have been articles in "north" media that sing paens to ARR... its just that we tend to remember the bits that hurt us longer than the good ones... more like remembering a dropped catch by a wicket keeper and not even thinking about many saves that he must've made behind the stumps... anyway, I don't think anything written by me can change perception that must've its basis in long-time experience... so.... :-)
bye

BTW...1 2 ka 4 takes time to get used to like all ARR albums...but it ir really good work but don't expect a Thiruda Thiruda or a Rangeela...ARR has given what the director has wanted...he has tuned himself iin recreating the 60s kind of HIndi melodies with contemporary rhythms..the output is very different but listenable...and once u get used to it u can really groove to it....ARR breaks old patterns of our musical experiences so that's the way it has to be.

Saketh@Binghamton :
Since you have asked my opinion on 12ka4 , I am pleased to give it. THis is completly personal. And I also understand the worth of money.
It is like this.
This album is much much better that usual Hindi stuffs, like dhadkan, Chori chori chupke chupke and many. But this is not ARR's best. Taal is still the best commercial hit and Zubeida to me is probably his best classical album in Hindi. This time ARR has taken care about the lyrics very well. Majroorh Sultan Puri and Mehaboob have pened sweet poems. MSP's last poem is in this film. (Do you actually understand Hindi..?). Choice of singers are also very ggod. ARR has not done much of experiment with this Album.
You can search in net for "One Two Ka Four" reviews. I have found them to be very positive. Again, it all depends on how you look at ARR. THis is an out and out ARR stuff for commercial HINDI audiance with a different hindi sound. You cannot hear dholaks and tablas and other usual stuffs here. But still, tabla is very nicely used in a qwali type of song ("Spna nahi naa sahi") in this movie.
As UVII has said, check it out with a cassette first. I liked it. But I will not force others to like it.

Spelling mistake
Read ("Spna nahi naa sahi") as
"Sona nahi naa sahi"
"chandi nahi na sahi"

Exactly!! i also didn't really like 1 2 ka 4 initially.... but I have this habit of not allowing myself to form an opinion about an album without listening it 3 times.... :-) ARR effect I guess... and as usual.. after 3 listenings, it seemed really good. Not all songs... but some are really good.... on the whole, I didn't f eel disappointed with it... and saying that is something as one disappointmnet depends on expectations and one does expect very good music from Rahman. (BTW speaking of expectations and disappointments, I think the expectations from "Lagaan" and "Water" are so high that probability of one's getting disappointed is very high... :-) I hope it doesn't happen that way.... and that would mean two of his all time best albums are about to release.... great times ahead!! :-) )
bye

Hi Rahul...been some time..after all my initial rants and ravings at IR's latest...I decided to keep a low profile for some time...guess 1 2 ka 4 had the same effect on us...looking forward to Lagaan...saw a bit of the promo on TV...photography was excellent...couldn't make out the music much though....hope ARR does some ground-breaking stuff in this one...

Rahul,
I agree that there are log of +ve reviews and opinions about ARR from north. But most of the -ve remarks seems to be coming out of north-bias ( I like to call it insecurity), and that is what bugging the most people in the south. On the contraty, there is less bias in south about north and people seems to be more open, if you accept it or not, that is fact.
