Hindi is sweet, Tamil is not - Says Karthik Raja
In an interview aired Tuesday (July 28) on Singapore's Oli Tamil Radio, to a question Karthik Raja replied that he likes composing for Hindi movies because the language is so sweet and makes his composition sound sweet. He went on to say that he thinks that that sweetness is missing in Tamil.
When the interviewers (two women) asked him about the current generation of singers he said that after SPB and Hariharan there has been no new male singer who is versatile. He added that the new male singers are all so monotonous.
The two women interviewers spoke in pure Tamil and only in Tamil. Karthik Raja's vocabulary was about 70% English and 30% Tamil. (At the end of the interview, the interviewers thanked him for his efforts to speak in Tamil.)
The interviewers asked who were the singers in his latest album, Karthik replied "Vijay Parakash, from Mumbai". The interviewers repied, "yeah, north indian singers' voices do have a vaseegaram".
I was so impressed at the maturity, diplomacy and the pride in heritage of the interviewers (the two Singaporean women).

cinema virumbi: Hindustani retained the grammar and syntax of the Hindi dialects. But, it used words from Persian,Arabic and Turkish. Also, the syntax of Turkish and Persian is considered to be similar to Hindustani. We use what is known as SOV(subject-object-verb) structure. Arabic has allows a different structure. That is why you see some differences. As you know the SOV order can be changed in poetry.

Rajesh: There is a theory in linguistics that identifies the origin of Greek,Latin and Sanskrit to the same area outside India. They show some similarities in words for numbers, relationships (father, mother etc) and body parts in these three languages. As you know, language, religion and politics are emotional topics and lead to unneeded acrimony. I will leave it at that.

Prem pyar/Thamizhukku...: What is sweet and what is harsh is subjective. It depends on the amount of familiarity and use. As they say in Tamil -even for a crow its offspring is golden(kakkaikkum than kunju ponkunju). In European languages French is considered to be the sweetest. I learnt German,French and Russian. I tend to agree with that assessment. Similarly I have read people call Telugu the French of South India. I have to agree with you on Tamil being neglected.

Mumbai Ramki -
I thought the article to be appropriate for purposes of Interchangeability.
In the place of Bolly/Kolly place HFM/TFM and you will see that the same points are applicable (apeing comes naturally because we evolved from apes? I know that shouldn't be such a revelation - but is.) - and the author alludes to this when he laments lack of "originality" and the "banal otherness" of it all.
I thought it to be a relevant tangent for the discussants here.

Salut!

One cannot judge the softness of a language without to know has the perfection, and nobody can speak all thelanguages about world. For me, French is undoubtedly the most beautiful living language, parce that I am of French origin. I know well that you will not agree with me, but I cannot say differently. It is Ca.
