There has been this image of IR being arrogant from his early days. I feel its more of lack of verbal communication from his part, and his peers being musicaly not par with him to communicate to him. What can you expect to a director, asking for Sitar type music for a scene.
Now let see who else is arrogant in TF world.
Rajni, made a sick statement that raja earns money on par with actor like him who work hard in sun. May be a joke but its unwanted. Is this a humble?
Kamal says he is bringing international std to kodambakkam. What is it about?. It may not be a direct statement, but he talks to that effect. The thing is, wasnt mahendran or others making movies of I std? Just because they are made in tamil without any 'inspiration' from hollywood, they are not upto I'std?. I'std comes when we make movies true to ourselves, not when they package india for foreign audience as in film like Kamasutra. Isnt kamal statements like last hope of TF arrogant?.
Rahman ignored IR name purposely in his early interviews when asked MDs whose music he admired. He said he is trying to bring some I'std to tamil music?. I can agree Tamil films are not great, but when music standard went that bad?. Best part was his claim that he used hollywood style of BGM. All his interviews he wants keep an separate identity, than other MDs as if he has got a dozen grammmys. Why cant he talk like a TFM MD?. Arent all these crap?.
SAR says he the melody king, himself!. so humble. Deva says all his copy is coincedence.

Sridhar,
I too saw the interview and remember a bit. What kupps has given seems to be right. But, yes I remember him saying some thing like meals, lunch, dinner etc.
See, IR talked out of little bit of frustration, because, he feels that he has not been given due recognition till now , which is also true. Also, he obviously feels that his work is exceptional. He really feels proud of what he has done. What's wrong?
If you see some interviews of TMS, he too talks like this. The reason is, he did not get the due recognition that he should have got. Now, people have forgotten him. We remember oldies of MGR and SG, but they are sung by TMS.
See, NI people, they adore their heros of yester years. They organise functions and parties to honour them. We don't do much. Neither our govt does. That's that pathetic condition.
Sorry... for getting away from topic.
If have to answer specifically to this question, then I would say that IR seems to be getting arogant in the way he talks.

I stand by what I said. He did say all that and also commented on the current music in TF. Said something about electronics/comp. Cant recollect properly. Self-praise may be tolerable(for some, not to me), but u cant go about degrading others music. And please dont tell me that that jab wasnt meant at ARR.

Sridhar:
why, even MSV had said that its like a fast food music and synth. music will die down after a short time. I remember the interview in TV (long before Sangamam- film) where he sounded a little bit unhappy about ARR (indirectly).
I have also seen him say that, his grand children now only listen to "urvasi.." and "mukabla.." songs.
I wouldn't call these words as arrogant, but I would term them as inhibition towards understanding mordern music.

yes, i remember that. He said the that the music nowadays is enjoyed by donkeys. I agree there is an inhibition, but u should also respect the others. They wud have 2 understand how they wud feel if ppl made fun of their music. And more importantly, its not important not be just a good musician, u have 2 be a good human being.

You have a very good logic going there - If anybody be it MSV or IR says today's music is enjoyable by donkeys (which is their opinion) - ther are not good human being and have no respect for others but if ARR calls his predecessor - a guy - he is still good both at heart and in music.

whats this thing about Rahman calling IR a guy? A guy is just a colloquial term for a man. So whats the big deal. Its not a derogatory term. I mean, this is really kiddish. I've been noticing this from quite a few days. There is no way on earth, calling someone guy would be an insult.I didn't want to say this in the beginning, coz its will be really kiddish, but u r forcing me to say it. Whats wrong in ARR calling IR a guy, is IR not one?

Oh C'mon guys,
what is wrong with calling someone 'guy'? don't be silly... We call IR 'mottai', 'mandyan', etc,... all the time. That doesn't mean we respect him any lesser.....
BTW, Swamiji, thanks for your advice..

Why is IR affectionately called 'mottai' or 'mandyan'?Does he devote his hair to God a lot?!

We do not know whether ARR actually used that word. Maybe the interview was in another languange and the translator chose to use 'guy' instead of 'man'.
Just another doubt.....

Forget the guy part whats with all those things about musicians doing drugs ?? Was ARR hanging out with rock and jazz musicians all day ? Where was he living all these days ? hmm..Is discipline the only thing about IR that somebody into music can talk about ? ARR should probably be sincere and say it, "I dont like his music that is why I started doing composing to save the TN and Indian people from his music" or something to that effect :( (Okay..I will not get annoyed..but ARR was being too silly..anybody can see through his veil of civility).

doubter,
translator chose to use 'guy' instead of 'man' That explains!. Don't you think the same explanation put into use before talking about IR. After all this image is projected by the same press. Sure, I do understand we apply rules selectively based on our convenience.
Sridhar,
whats this thing about Rahman calling IR a guy? A guy is just a colloquial term for a man. So whats the big deal Not a big deal. Someone in this thread said 'westerners call their parents man/guy..'. Can you do this to your father/uncle?. Well we have a culture where we address a person respectfully. That was missing and that is what we try to say.

I watched the same interview on TV, it was in English only and he addressed IR as 'that guy' once and as 'this guy' again. Though it is an accepted norm in the west to address people that way, I felt somewhat awkward when I heard it (but it is upto the indivduals) as we don't do that in India esp Tamil Nadu. ARR also said, 'IR was one of my inspirations but ONLY CHARACTERISE !!'. I think he wanted to emphasize 'not musically'.
They showed the programme in Maryland area in International channel in inDialog program and they showed twice.

Whats wrong in ARR praising IR's discipline. He had had a troubled childhood and obviously at such an age, drugs are really people fall into. But after seeing IR and the way he composed, he realised that it was not necessary. You cant dictate how Rahman has to praise IR.
