Folks,
Thodarum is out!!
This movie features Ajith, Devayani and Heera (the successful
Kaathal Kottai trio). Music is by Ilayaraja and it is
available on Pyramid Audio.
Once again Raja has come up with three gems,
1) Shock Adikkum Nilave (Hariharan, Poornima and Gobika)
Raja has let his drums on a roll here!! I have been
waiting for this type of a song from Raja for a long time.
We've had a lot of melodies in the recent times, but
this one's a feet tapper. He has experimented with
quite a few techniques here,
One instance is, in the charanams, it takes a change in
the background rythm and takes a melodious recourse
for a short time and comes back to the fast number!!
Well done by Raja.
2) Oru Thulir onnu Arumbuthu (Unnikrishnan and Bhavatharini)
The best song of the movie, IMO.
You could also add this song to the thread
"Songs with brilliant starts".
Starts of with a prayer kind of prelude (rendered by
Deepika, I think) and merges beautifully with
the actual rythm. This song will stay in Raja fans'
mind for a long time to come...
3) Sernthu Vazhum Neram (By Ilayaraja)
This song, a pathos type, must be the same type
as Nanthavanakkuyile from Ponnu Vettukaran.
Once again, IR's voice is packed with emotions and
he as rendered it soulfully. Great song...
Other 3 songs in this movie are...
4) Kanavanukkaga Ethiyum (By SPB)
This is another pathos song. Very good to hear.
5) Yamma Yamma Thalli Chellu (SPB and Chitra)
This song is set in a romantic mood. I needed to
hear it 3 or 4 times to get used to this one...
Now, I like it very much.
6) Naan than mappilai (Arunmozhi, Malasiya Vasudevan, Gangai Amaran and Ramesh)
I was a bit sceptical about this song when I first
heard this. This song was probably done to make
the audience smile. It does that very effectively.
I think, this album is a very good one and
a worthy buy.

Guys: I am too tired and do not have the time to edit all the responses that were unrelated to the topic. Come to think of it, SPM eulogizing IR itself doesn't belong here but to the thread IR-idam saranaagathi. :-). But further postings on this issue will be deleted. The right place for this as pointed out earlier is the politness and this forum thread. Hope to see you people there.

I am sure as Deepak says Thodarum is eagerly awaited. I am enjoying MVU just too much, veer thalattu, ponnum veettukkaran, kizhakkum merkkum, annan all amazing albums, it is just getting back to the old days, like when raja is trying all new rhythms and sounds. I remember writing to him long back about incorporating a certain orchestra style and that my god is appearing in one new song in a totally amazing melody. raja just is listening to all of us and he knows he wants to make us all happy. I am emotionally overwhelmed at whatever song i hear these days particularly in raja's voice. it reminds me that raja' voice has been part of all tamilians mental landscape.

Few words to SPM,
Hello SPM, Pls don't keep asking whether IR is going to join hands with Barathiraja, Balachander, Bagyaraj, Manirathnam etc., IR is not in a position to solicit them. Moreover "Neenga kuripitta anaivarum ippa manna kavvikittuthan irunkanga". It's better for Raja to not join with them again to regain his position.

SPM, what is DG?
I heard Deivan Indru of MVU, the interludes are like a movement in a symphony. Amazing, just too much.

The Fan:
"deivam indru" is not from MVU, Deva
should be the music director for that
song. It has traces of 'singam onru
purappattathE' from "arunAchalam".
So I think the person who is having
this site should have messed up the
name of the movie.

In defense of Senthooram's music -
1) This song is very interesting. Just some kind of traditional drums in the foreground (almost in your face) and vocals way behind, accompanied by bass guitar. The first interlude has some kind of pipe (probably keyboard) and the second interlude has flute. Does not have IRs orchestration. It might look as though the drums and the vocals dont mix, but I think it does. The drums are placed in the left and right channels and the vocals is centered.
If you system has good bass reproduction you will enjoy this very well.
(chinna manikkaaga song)
2) Western drums (electronics, sounds real) in the centre and foreground. Gentle vocals. Again interesting.
(ippaththaan vayasukka vanthathu polirukkuthada)
3) IR's usual style but he is trying to use a female's voice to provide musical effect. I think there are women in our country who have a much better way of laughing.
(un pakkaththile)
4) Bavatharini in duet, usual IR style song. WHy is there no 'eRRam, erakkam' in her singing ?
(alamaram)
5) Trying to use the sound of goats to musical effect. Even the lyrics end in 'mE' like 'pOvOmE' etc.
(adi unna kaanama)
6) very melodious song. usual IR style orchestration in the interludes.
The whole movie IR seems to have been experimenting especially the first song. The songs are all recorded very well. You can literally see the soundstage if you have a good music system. The instruments are spread laterally, as well as in depth.
If IR is going to do stuff like this, I am going to get a new pair of speakers and amps. Mind you this is not Rahman style of recording. This is almoasts a purists sytle. You can hear the triangle/cymbals so clearly.
Gone are the days when you could listen to IR on AM radio. Now go out and get a good stereo system. If you have separate speakers place them part on some stands, if not, on your coffee table.
AND I REALLY DONT UNDERSTAND WHEN PEOPLE SAY THAT SENTHOORAM IS NOT MUSICAL !!!
hmm.. maybe I am an ignoramus, damn but I like what I am hearing !!

I AM REALLY VERY DISAPPOINTED TO SEE 'DEIVAM INRU' SONG UNDER IR's MVU atleast in two sites one in www.bharath.com (New Songs) and the other at from TFM listening pleasure 'Songs at New movies' ,This song is same as Deva's 'Singam onru ' from Arunachalam, Why is this happening , is it really in the albumn or is it a mistake , Can some one clarify this urgently??? I am very upset with this , if it is really from the albumn how can IR allow this even if it is Director's choice.

singam onRu purappattadhe itself is not original, but is set in villuppAttu style, "thandhanathom enRu solliyE villinil pAda vandharuLvAi gaNapathiyE".this is a traditional kadavuL vAzhthu in villuppAttu.
