Friends,
I am a regular visitor for this site.
I have a question which is haunting me for a while.
We all know Priya was the first stereo in TFM in
1977.
Is there any specific reason why IR did not record those wonderful songs in "Stereo"in the following years between 1978 and 1982.
I know there were few in numbers even during that period.
Even after that he was not consistent.
Any thoughts?

"Getting the analog masters from the studios could be an ardous task"
K, but can we get them just like that even if we wanted to? Arent the production companies involved have to be paid off first? I thought they held the copyrights or does Raja hold it?That is something recording companies like Oriental should be doing. I think Rajaangahm could atleast take some initiatives regarding this. Its a pity if the analog masters of Eara vizhi kaviyangal are gathering dust somewhere.
LPs and turntables..hmm.. looks like we have to be on reverse gear as far as technology is concerned to listen to oldies:-) Thanks for the info though.

Thanks 'K' for your eloborate write up.
I think this thread is really coming back to my purpose of opening it.
Are u saying 'Ninaivellam Nithya' is Stereo.
I have never heared those songs with Stereo effect. If you have one pleased upload it.
I have seen an interview of IR way back in the 90s that he did mention that the movie 'Thalabathy' was recorded at Bombay. He suggested to 'GV' about recording it in Bombay to have a superior quality and GV immediately responded him and assured him that he will do it inspite of the extra expense.
'K' Coming back to the topic of converting to Stereo are u saying that we convert from CDs with some software at our level.
I know it may not be the best, but still can you suggest any software?
BTW,Have you guys observed there is a special category of Stereo IR had recorded in which he specifically recorded the rhythimic instruments with Base guitar on one side and all the other instruments which form the pieces on the other side.
Some songs qualifying that category are,
Vellai Pura Ondru
Padavandhadhor Ganam,
Kanne Kalimane,
Ponvanam Panir thovudhu,
Putham Pudhu Kalai etc.

Some of the albums I remember that came out under Raja Records is Nadodi Thendral, Idhayam, Thambikku oru pattu, etc. BTW, the recent Rajavin Ramanamalai says released by Raja Universal Music. Is this company still alive?
Evol. vii, I have also read that Thalapathy songs were recorded in Mumbai and how NI MDs crowded the studio to see the recordings, esp. Rakkamma song.

I also remember reading that Thalapathy was the first 24-track album. Is it true?
Raja Records cassette quality was good, compared to Echo. I fondly remember the R logo (like a visiri).
Another query - were HTNI and NBW released by Echo/Oriental Records? Are these still available in US?

even I've read that Thalapathy songs were recorded in Mumbai. Coming to the Rakkamma song, does any1 hv a good quality of the song with the beats sounding heavily? I hv the Thalapathy-Annamalai Combo CD in which the beats of all the songs sound very low.
And coming to the movie, can any1 upload the temple-scene version of "Chinnathaayaval" song?

vijay..LPs are a high resolution medium. They lost out to CD mainly on the convenience aspect. Even today a lot of music gets released on LPs in the US. There turntables costing $10000 !!!. I know of so many fans of IR's and older music who have invested thousands of dollars on a stereo system centered around a turntable.
ganspb ..mono or stereo - should not matter. (try to get a mono version of Pink Floyd on ebay..it will set you back by a hundred or two). It is the quality of recording that matters. I have many LPs in mono I really enjoy (TMS/SPB/PS MDed by MSV and IR).
You really want to collect more music that you like. The next (or simulataneously) thing you want to do is to have a system that reproduces whats on this medium really well. What sort of a stereo do you have ?

K, although I remember you mentioning something about this in a thread called"TFM and technology" I would request you to once again list down your recommended audio system(both for LPs as well as CDs) for best listening, as of now, along with a rough price estimate if possible.I am fine with you suggesting amps+speakers instead of integrated CD players.
And if something better is going to come up within the next year or two I am willing to wait too.
Just FYI, I listen to quite a wide variety of music so all kinds of CDs/LPs would need to be heard on those systems.Thx.

'K'
Right now I don't have any system.
I have a good Dell PC which has a very good Multimedia system and I enjoy my music.Apart from that normally I hear music on my car when I commute to office.
I will also join Vijay in asking you what would be the best recommended system to you.
I would look in Ebay also.

Evolution vii, heard your uploaded 'Devathai' song. Though it comes second best to 'Engengo' it also has its own charm.
I liked the way the background beat in the opening Pallavai swings between the two speakers along with the vocals. Someone has tried this sweet little swing in the recording room and it has come out quite well.

please check out www.goodsound.com ..you can see equipment reviews in www.audioreview.com or buy used stuff at www.audiogon.com.
Basically for good music reproduction..you need separates..separate speaker, CD/DVD player, preamp/amplifier or receiver..
Maybe I will do a write up and ask the administrators put it up as a technical/music system FAQ..
Yes, I too listen to all kinds of music ..tamil film music, western classical, jazz, classic rock etc (in that order). You need good system especially to listen to IR's music...too many instruments and strings/trumpets sound harsh if the system is not good. Also, the trademark of IR is counterpoint..two contrasting melodies played at the same time..ofcourse one will be at a lower volume. only in a good system this come out..
Today I was listening to KJY songs in the car...one was vizhiyE kathai ezhuthu (mgr song)..the next one was veLLai pura onRu..the bass counter melodies in this song..immediately identifies this as an IR song..not many people know about these aspects of IR's music ..no wonder there are so many other MDs now..
