//I normally do not watch Hindi movies, but for the fact that I happened to see the name of Hungary Radio Symphony Orchestra in one of the posters. I got interested by that and went to watch the movie. What a stupendous piece of work by Illayaraja. I have never ever heard such a treatment given to all the scenes through music. It seemed as though I was watching an English movie. The effect was like that. And the ease at which music flows from one scene to another is also unbelievable. Hats off to Santoshi for choosing Illayraja. I hope rest of the directors will follow suit. The background score should be inspiration for all upcoming and budding music directors.//

i think IR can really go even more experimental thne ever before. kasi, azhagi and the last few years songs are good in patches, particularly orchestration is class. but, if IR has no restrictions or does not care (it is too evident) for great tunes or hits then he could go offbeat and take chances without any risk, why doesn't the Maestro do that? that is the mystery.

Though I agree that the current taste of Film Music in Tamil NAdu is abysmal, why should even reasonable music listeners, listen to Songs like Kasi? IR has given far better songs in the fast and they would rather hear them than these half-baked repeats. I did not see any thing new in these songs, and even SAR could have taken some old IR hits and churned out far better numbers.
Though I see no variety in HH singing, the songs themsleves lack emotions! I would rather see IR stop churning out songs like these, than having his songs running 10th in the Top 10 List (the sad fate happened to KUT songs) ! His songs neither please the critics nor the common man!
The only consoldation are the good lyrics by Mu Mehta and Pulamai Piththan!

Balaji,
His songs neither please the critics nor the common man!
When from you became the judge for TFM? I would greatly appreciate if you can tell us who is(are) pleasing the critics and common man these days?

seriously i agree with Balaji. I cannot believe that IR composed those songs for movies especially after Bharathi, some even earlier. only patches some IR, but mostly as if IR does not care anymore. is the never ending well of IR film songs dried up completely? i think that is it. or, is IR channelling his best for some other works? that is the question. time to face the fact: did Sivaji compete when people like Saratkumar, ajit etc came? even when Kamal and Rajini became stars. How can IR continue to be the inpsired when it is time his sons need all the best breaks and they are tkain off reallywell too.

"a fan", balaji..... lets wait for the movie.... had we heard the songs of SETHU before the movie came, iam sure everyone would have said the same thing..... but after seeing the movie, most of us agreed, they were 100% apt for the movie.... hey, in fact after a very very very very long time, many of the magazines did agree too on that front..... and iam 100% sure, that KAASI songs would also fall under that category.....
and, i personally feel, "Maanu Thoolu Onnu" and "En Maana Vaanil" are real good numbers..... and a big yes, the lyrics are really very good.... hope IR concentrates on that in future too.....
may be everyone gets that this is not a good album, because it sounds very old (thats what my friends and wife too said).....

Could you please list the movies recenlty released by SAR that are comparable with 'kAsi'? Thanks.

STS:
I am no judge, but the reality is IR's songs neither get glorious reviews nor top the TOP 10 List. (hence neither critics nor common man). If we are going to dispute that this is not reality, then please advise me what is happening now in TFM!
Sabesan:
I believe Kasi is some kind of a folk singer! The songs lacks the emotions for that charactcer (strng willed blind man with falir for music!, a la Kathal Oviuym == You can sense life in Poovil Vandu song). The songs in Kasi sound so old, they seems older than the Tamil Film screenplay! I belive the lyrics make you sit thru the song, neither HH nor IR's music!!
MPR:
SAR has done that earlier in UEK and TMT! It was a sarcastic remark coming from a disappointed long-time IR fan!
Final Remark: If some one is going to thrash me for my remarks, fine go ahead! IMO, IR can provide better music and He has consistently done in the past for several years!!

AZAGKI is cool...here is my view...ALL IMHO...
1)Paathu Cholli - How many SIVARANJANIs can this man churn out? I guess this is yet another sivaranjani raga song from IR. Sadhana sargam is good here, but would like her to improve in pronunciation matters.
2)Damakku Damakku Dumm - Bhavatharini again. Reminds one of 'Poo arumbuthu' song of Kutti...Guess this is too set in MADHYAMAVATHI ragam a la that KUTTI song. Kind of grows up on you with every subsequent hearing.
3)Un Kuthama en kuthama - Agmark IR stuff. Sad & indifferent meloncholy, rendered brilliantly by IR. Look at the way he starts the charanam and traverses higher in mid-way and drops softly to sweetly melt into the pallavi...I guess it is another good KEERAVANI raga added to his already huge list of keeravani based songs...
4)Oru Sundari vandhalam - So u are tired after a long days work?..Back to bed?..turn on this song...so friendly & soothing is the song that you instantly know someone close to you is relieving all that pressure strains u accumulated all day...But this is my own perception, yours might be different..( i sincerely wish people do not disregard it is just another chorus song...i assure you it is not so)
5) Oliyile Therivadhu Devadaiya - Raja raja raja...where were you all these days? Or is it that we had temporarily lost you (as you told in an interview)..Man, what a trademark 1980s song from IR,...Lovely...good rendering by Karthik & Bhava..will top the charts once the film is out....
6)Kuruvi Kodainja - Only song that made me feel,"oops, this could have been avoided,"...crap lyrics make it un-hearable ...(real vulgur song in recent times)...poor (immediately after one single hearing, i earsed this song and replaced it with 'Ninnai charan adainthen' of Bharathi)....

I agree with you - as I hear to the songs I feel KAASI is top class. As I hear to it, I find something fresh in every song - How does he come up so many tunes. For example, Naan Paadum Ullangangal sounds to me a different song - The song starts differently and HH seems to be singing the Charanam in a different way than the rest of the songs.
Various IR fans want various things - Some want somehing new everytime - some want his songs to be the same way it was before - Some wants him to use all techno sound and beat the current day MD's at their own game - Some want him to use only natural instruments and do things like he did in the past.
Luckily IR has reached a stage where he doesn't bother about all this stuff and carries on with his work his own way. He tries to fit his songs to the film and to the director's perception.
BTW, This could be a brand new thread -
Is it necessary that every song should bring in a new change or experiment?. Won't people hear to similar kind of songs if it is otherwise good - like pleasing to the ears, well rendered, tunes though might have traces of the past is different?.
I guess our gramathu makkal would acccept it- Let us see.

While debating about who should have sung the songs in KASI, i think it should have been RAAJA himself. the melody would have blossomed with his voice, full of life. i wonder how he could resist the temptation of singing such terrific earthy melodies.
