Can we list and discuss the songs of UR here? I think she has given innumerable hit songs under IR's baton.

To say that someone who has trained in both Hindustani and Carnatic Music cannot pronounce Hindi is quite simply a status of bias
Hindustani training has NOTHING to do with purity of Hindi pron. And Carnatic has definitely nothing to do with it :)
However a kind request to u to desist from calling me "biased". I am being plain and objective. I have never been a blind fan of anyone, not even of my favourite VJ.
Also if JA said that she was the only singer to bring back "shudh" into Hindi music, I cannot help laughing. In the 70s and 80s the "shudhhta" was very much there in Hindi music. Moreover I personally feel Sadhana and Kavita and Alka have better Hindi diction than VJ - though they are not even 1% of her singing skills PUT TOGETHER.

Naaz! To just add my small comment, let it be said that most TFM singers who've stepped through the carnatic music arena are way behind in their Tamil diction! Why, of the current sizeable bunch of 'carnatic musicians turned film singers', can anybody match SPB's Tamil or Telugu diction, which should be the case going by your logic?

Another favorite of mine is 'Aananda Raagam'.

It is sad that uma ramanan has not been properly utilised. is it because her mother tongue is tamil? We seem to prefer akkarai pacchai

Or is that akkarai kuppai? Tamizh speaking singers are "out-of-fashion" these days. And Tamizh natives have no problem with all the many different ways their language is "sung" these days...It is saddening. But who really cares?

Nice thread. Amazed by the kind of info people have in their memories!! By going thru' this thread, I could get a great collection of Uma Ramanan's songs.
Yes, I totally agree with Naaz (where are you now Mr.Naaz, havent heard from you for quite a while!) that it looks like people with right Tamil diction is 'out of fashion'. Uma had a perfect diction. As NagaS rightly mentioned in another thread, the "azhutham" in her pronounciation was a highlight of her voice and more importantly her voice in higher octaves never went screechy. Also she is a very down to earth and unassuming person.
Its really sad that our TFM has failed to recognise her (read A.V.Ramanan's point in the interview link). But I am happy that many Music lovers have been able to identify the 'specialness' in her voice.

I like Uma's "Bhoopalam Isaikkum" from "Thooral Ninnu Pochu".
Uma goes High Pitch at
"Iru Manam Sugam Perum Vaazh Naale" and does it better than KJY.
There is one song,
"Idhu Poothirukkum Vaname"
which she has done with Hariharan in Vidyasagar's music and the film is one which features Mamooty and Arvindsamy together.
The song is really good and a melody.
And also, she has done one melody with Hariharan in Deva's music.
I am not able to recollect the song and the film.
The film is a Karthick Film and is also the one which contains the popular song
"Bombay Dyeing Suite la Paatha Diving Manasu Diving; Un Passport Size Photo Dhandhaa Flying Kissu Flying" sung by SPB and SJ.
Friends, are you able to spot the film and also the song by Uma in that film ?

"Ponn Maalai Kobam Aeno..." from
"Oru Kaidhiyin Dairy"
(Sorry I am not remembering the exact lines)

Hye folks, U left two wonderful songs of UR. One is ' Poonkathave thazh thiravai ' and the other is ' Sevvandi pookalil seida veedu '. Both are class songs. None can ever imagine of such a quality South Indian song. Just hear them in the dusk. U'll forget urself and run behind IR.

Irrasign, yes!! Esp. the "Sevvandi pookalil..." song. Amazing! I happened to hear it accidently on one of the channels (I guess it was in Jaya's late night Melodies). It impresses the very first time you listen to it.
