Kamesh: Thanks for pointing out this great news. ARR is always into doing things for Charity, this seems to be a nice one too.

SANGAMAM Review
Sowkiyamma - Nithyashree
First time in many many years that MAAND Raga has been handled in such a pure fashion. In the past, from ARR. Anjali from Duet and Nila Kaayhiradhu from Indra had traces of this Raga, Maragathagathamani also used this Raga in Azlagan in the song Jaadhi malli Poocharame, but again, it was not given the Carnatic Purness this song has. Nithyashree has pulled this of very well, giving the right Ghamakams e.t.c., the use of Kaadri on the Sax was also a very good move, adding a novel touch to the song. I felt that there was a lot of the structure of Minsaara Kanna in this which wasn't necessarily a bad thing, but could have done with small twists. What more can I say, it's nice to see a Carnatic Maand after many years(Oru naal Podhuma was the last Classical number in TFM if I remember rightly).
Mazhai Thuli - M. S. Vishvanathan, Hariharan, Chorus
A nice Raga KEERAVANI number. Apparently when recording this one many had tears in their eyes when MSV emoted so well the "Mahane Vaa" bits. It's fast and has a nice beat, Hariharan sings this very well, giving a folk tinge and bringing out the emotions of a son to his father, who has given his so much, in this case, namely the "Kaalukku Salangai Katti".
Maargazhi Thingalallava - Unnikrishnan, S. Janaki, , Chorus
SINDHUBAIRAVHI Ragam in it's glory. This a a Ragam that has been extremely popular for film songs, using almost all notes in the Scale in various nuances. ARR has used this for the first time, doing it well. The Chorus renders the 'Thirrupaavai' style start very nicely and the S. Janakai(She really has kept her voice well) sings beautifully, to a song with a nice complex Tala structure, played very well by Sriram on the Mirudangam. Unni makes a brilliant entrance and in true conviction 'makes up' with his lover/wife. Nice use of Ghamakas here too. My only quib is that this one and Mudhal Murai start with a miniscule Virutham style and then have the fast, Mirudangam beat, before the song joins the rhythm.
Muthal Murai - Sujatha, Srinivas
Nice, pleasant song. Sujatha's voice seems to have been modulated to give it that honey feeling. Srinivas also sings this well, but I would have preferred a more Ganeer kural, like Unni's here. It has touches of the Andhimandharai song, Sakiye Neethaan Thunaiye, which also is a DERIVATIVE of the KAMAAJ THAAT(Harikamboji). i guess this is why ARR didn't use Unni to sing it.
Aalala Kanda - Hariharan,M. S. Vishvanathan, Chorus
Part of the Mazlai Thuli song, just emphasizing some of the lyrical content between Father and Son.
Varaaga Nadhikkarai - Shankar Mahadevan, Chorus
This song which reminds one of Dheena Karunaakarane Nataraja(someone else mentioned this too!) and the structure of old North Indian Kawaali Numbers. This resembelence being because of ARR's use of the Raga HINDUSTAANI BEHAG, sounding very like YAMAN KALYANI. Shankar sings this beautifully, where his high pitched Ghamakams are wonderful and he brings out the 'forceful' emotions to be portrayed extremely well. The chorus also gives very good backing. As for Shankar - This guy's to watch out for, he has his album, Breathless, his performances with Silk/Maha, his various TFM numbers for IR, like Chittu Parakudhu(Nilave Mugham Kaatu), Sorgathil Nikka(Rajasthan).
MUSICIANS:
Mirudangam: Srinivasan
Saxophone solo: Kadri Gopalnath
Kanjira: T. V. Selvaganesh
Additional programming: H. Sridhar
Percussion: Veda, Lakshminarayana
Thappaddai: Thanjavur R. Rangarajan and Party
Mukhaveena: Vasu
Daps: Kumar
Ghatham: Karthik
All in all, a very good Carnatic/folk blend album, with various styles explored. So far, comments from people have been very positive, the old like it, the young like it too. It's nice to see Indian Classical music coming back into fashion, I for one is very pleased to advocate this trend. Hope it carries on.

Geetha,
I appreciate your in depth review; you've covered all bases and saved me from writing a review. I'm immensely enjoying Sangamam as well. VM keeps an enjoyably low profile and complements the tunes and music which rule this soundtrack. ARR's selection of singers is getting better, a hearty thanks for staying away from the Thamizh impaired (although Nithyasree could have been told, I'm nit picking here, that it's sowkiyamaa and not sowgiyamaa).
I loved the choice ARR made in going for mirudhangam and saxophone in Sowkiyama a bold departure from the traditional thavil and nadhaswaram combo.
I agree with you on everything except Srinivas. I think highly of him. His voice has the fragile romantic timbre that I haven't heard since the great A.M. Raja. When he sings "Salangayae Mellap Paesu" he conveys the longing so beautifully. Unni Krishnan would have done the song justice too, but Srinivas is new and refreshing.
Shankar Mahadevan, wow. A Thamizhan singing Thamizh what a grand concept!

Hello everyone,
I just wanted to pitch in with my thoughts after having read the "verbal battles", accusations, "who is better".... etc.. etc..
Firstly, everybody has his or her own music likes and dislikes. Not everybody knows charanams, pallavis, ragams, beats, octaves or the music mumbo jumbo.. but majority of the people are like me ... just having a "music ear" to appreciate and like soothing music. Having been a IR fan since 1976, I can consider myself of having atleast seen three music directors rule and deliver. It was MSV , IR and now ARR. There is no doubt ARR is here to stay simply because he has the stuff.
When I started to appreciate IR ( in my teens) everybody around me called me names... They said MSV was the greatest... the best and went on to pick on every IR song to dissect it into fragments to garner proof that he either copied or repeated himself. Well, that was 20 years ago. Today the situation is just the same, but its IR and ARR now.. How strange ?
Definitely IR is not he same anymore. I see streaks of bright spots but gone are the great days. As a "sensible" music fan, I appreciate ARR for bringing in a different perspective to TFM. Like it or not, ARR songs are rich in rhythms, bass and have the underlying "hindustani touch" to make it different. Hey, he has atleast experimented more than the other current MDs and has made the quality of recording much better.
Some IR fans may not like what I have said, but the fact that IR cannot go on forever is the bitter truth. IR has nothing more to prove !!!
Lastly, I am happy its ARR who rules and not Deva.... Can you imagine our plight if Deva was the successor to IR....
Listen to songs composed by all these guys and appreciate the difference in style and melody.
An analogy ... Is Bjorn Borg better than Pete Sampras ??? Mmmmm gets me thinking as they are players of different eras ... so is the music world ...
Hate me for this posting...
Thanks
Arasu

Hey,
Some time ago, I asked the question:
Taal, is it going to be released in Tamil as Thalam
and to answer my own question, YES!
http://www.chennaionline.com/chips/cinenews/
Subhash Ghai's bilingual film titled "Taal" in Hindi ("Thalam" in Tamil) stars Akshaye Khanna, Anil Kapur and Aishwarya Rai in the cast. Music is by A.R. Rehman. There are seven songs in the film. The climax consists of a dance sequence. This segment was shot in Canada in front of around 5000 fans.
later...

Geetha, exemplary review of Sangamam (in your usual self). I somehow felt that Mazhai thuli song had nothing great to rave about. MSV for this song?
