Talking about Dil Se...
I think MR could not have made a more worse movie. I would attribute that to the weakest possible storyline I have ever seen. I could not even follow the chain of events and then all of a sudden the climax. I had much more expectations from MR. The music was OK, but does not co-incide with the turn of events, and they seem to be pretty abrupt in the midst of the movie. And over and above the voices of Sukhvinder and Sonu Nigam don't seem to be in place. I would say, they should have sung in the BG, and the artistes should not have sung along. The best thing in the movie that I think every body has praised is the camera and the locales of the North East. I have been to a lot of places in NE India, and I think that they have chosen probably the best of those.
Overall, it is a pretty boring movie to Watch.

Dil Se:
It is very true. Mr. ARR has come with songs straight from his heart this time! There is a limit to this type of creativity. It is a kind of joke I thing. I have never heard such incomplete, imperfect rhythms, tunes or half-baked songs as it comes from ARR. Please forgive me for the criticis. Because of the ARR wave, many other talented composer's are not getting their due share.
If ARR can keep things simple and melodious with innovative rhythms it will be good. But, just becuasue your name sells, it does not mean you should make hay while the sun shines with whatever pops up.

Guys,
IMHO Dil Se is a totally mediocre album. I agree that the songs have been made CATCHY, but there is no musical innovation. The reason for its grand success is the media hype and the Mani + ARR brand name. Maestro's contribution for Mani's films was far more innovative. What can I say? Just listen to Mauna Raagam, Agni*, Anjali, Geetanjali (Telugu), Dhalapathi. In these albums, Maestro was ablt to satisfy both the connoisseurs and the laymen. ARR's ventures seem to be outright commercial (targeting mass audiences), without anything for the discriminating listeners (with the initial exceptions of Pudhiya Mugham, Tirudha Tiridha , Roja ..). I feel that Rehman is compromising TOO much for the sake of making his songs appeal to the Hindi audiences.

after reading the controversy over dil se, i feel vairamuthu is vindicated in using english lyrics like "mixie, gypsy, telephone mani pol"etc. it will not create any controversy of this sort!!!!! there are so many songs in tamil which can offend certain communities , but no one bothers.

Where can I get the background score of Jeans, I specifically need the humming tune ARR uses in the titles and later while Aishoo's purse is being riffled in the airport. Its a wow score and I saw the movie twice just to hear that.
Need the CD company name. Someone told me its there in the Tseries Hindi version but i checked the CD its not there.

Hi,
I am a regular reader of this forum and this ongoing debate about IR and ARR is quite interesting. However, the following statement made by one Mr.Srinivas was, to be frank, quite appalling.
"I feel that Rehman is compromising TOO much for the sake of making his songs appeal to the Hindi
audiences."
First of all, to say that Hindi speaking people compromise on music or implying that they are satisfied with mediocre music is unjustified and unfair.
Secondly, Dil Se was ALWAYS publisized and advertised as Mani Ratnam's first Hindi movie (undubbed)!
I really appreciate music directors using Hindi/Punjabi singers to sing South Indian music and South Indian singers to sing Hindi(north indian ) songs.
All this notion of Hindi, non-Hindi etc.. is a whole lot of bull and crap. We can put up with Singaporeans, African-Americans, Chinese etc in foreign lands but cannot talk good of our own fellow Indians. Come on! Grow up!

Annapurna,
The Tamil-Hindi language issue is political because Hindi threatened to erase Tamil out of Tamil Nadu. If Malay, African, or Chinese languages threaten Tamil, then they won't enjoy the welcome they otherwise do either.
I appreciate your egalitarian attitude but please don't simplify a major issue about one's birthright that is language, history deserves to be remembered.

While I normally agree with Udhaya on most things I feel I must take issue with his statement to the effect that "Hindi threatened to erase Tamil out of TN".Correct me if I'm wrong but what Tamils objected to was the universal imposition of Hindi as a national language by a predominantly Hindi-speaking central govt.I'm not sure where that debate stands as of now but in any case Udhaya's statement brings in an incendiary political element into a discussion where it doesnt strictly apply. What Annapurna's addressing I think is the constant resistance to cross-linguistic exchange in TFM by purists/traditionalists in this DF.But that I think can be explained by the fact that Indians outside India tend to more conservative than people back home.
But I wont deny that this is a very contentious topic and I would like to see more DFers pitch in with their thoughts.

now, was this not Hindi threatening to erase Tamil out of TN?
Sreeni, if Annapurna's addressing. . .the constant resistance to cross-linguistic exchange in TFM by purists/traditionalists in this DF
then let her not use incendiary statements like All this notion of Hindi, non-Hindi etc.. is a whole lot of bull and crap. . .Come on!Grow up!
I've known people who burned themselves for Thamizh, and believe me it ain't no bull and crap!
