kiru,
"I think you are privileged with a good musical knowledge.Unfortunately,I'm not."was addressed to podhum not you.
"Filtering the time-scale".I will tell you what I know.A part of a music is taken and the music is altered by chopping off or clipping etc certain parts of it so that it can be mixed with something else or it can stand by itself. The pace of it is also varied if necessary for it to sound new (not for the sake of making it different)to obtain the desired effect pertaining to the mood of the song or to keep up the excitement effect.
roll/off or sweeten of harmonics is just one of the effects or techniques of 'filtering freq scale'.I vaguely remember reading somewhere that you can achieve a lot more with it.

Trend,
Can you list the unique mixture of instruments used by ARR ? (Note, I am not saying he has not done that :-)).
I will then tell you some interesting sounds in his recordings.

Hey, just because Jennifer Lopez gets to sing and dance on MTV, Channel [V], etc. it shouldn't be inferred that she is a great singer. In fact, in my opinion, she has only sex appeal (that too, only to Americans; I don't think anyone in India would say she's attractive) and no real singing talent (how many of her songs have you really found catchy?). So if A R Rahman really gets to work with Jennifer Lopez, it isn't really a great achievement for him. The fact that you were all so thrilled at hearing that he is about to work with Jennifer Lopez shows that you all think that what you see on MTV, Channel [V] etc. is what music is all about. What can I say? The content of these channels is largely controlled by the Americans, so it is all very likely to be to their tastes, and because these channels are watched almost all over the world, it looks as if what they listen to is what music is all about and how they dance is what dancing is all about, etc., etc. and so when you listen to A R Rahman composing western style music, you think it's great. Remember, there are more Indians around than Americans, so it is us, the majority, who should really be dictating trends. Our tastes are those of the majority. So please understand, it's not uncool to listen to Ilayaraja's music. But having said all this, he has got this opportunity to work with Sir Andrew Lloyd Weber, a truly great composer, and that is really quite a great achievement. Even though I am a fan of Ilayaraja, I really think A R Rahman has achieved soomething truly great. By the way, I don't know whether or not it's true that A R Rahman is going to work with Jennifer Lopez (I don't think it is).

Hi,
Based on Trends comments, can we say, ARR's music is full of "altered sounds"? Btw, it is like that - IMHO.
May be that's why ARR goes for the karoke sound in live shows? (so much of cut & paste - to alter the sound, leave alone the lifting part - has to be done to create "unique" sounds)...
just my opinion

A Tamil Guy who has changed the face of music not only in tamil nadu but the whole of india and have made others taken notice of his contribution itself is an acheivement( would take others to dream of only).
Arr not only appeals to the masses but also the elite few and made proud the indian audiophiles. Why compare him with anyone.he is the best now. period.
