KamalIRfan,
Each movie is played twice at the Film Festival. I made it to the second showing, where the house was 'almost' full. A friend of mine made it to the first screening where the house was full. Kamal also introduced the movie and fielded questions on the first screening.
The organizers said they were expecting Kamal for the second showing too, but he did not turn up.
Some of the songs were not in the movie - I guess Kamal wanted to cater to the western audience. 'raamaraanalum baabaraanalum', the piano sequence with 'nee paartha parvaikku', and 'pollaatha mathanabhanam' followed by the love-making scene were missing from the movie.
But the full version of 'neepartha paarvaikku' has been inserted as BGM in the scene where Saket Ram returns to calcutta.
As for the reception, most of the 'Indian' people who showed up for the screening (which was about 1/3 of the crowd) left as soon as the movie ended and the titles started rolling. Most of the white/yellow/black people stayed back patiently till all the titles were done, then stood up and applauded.
I found this remarkable because the titles were all in Tamil - not a single english word was there. The people stayed back, just so they could applaud the movie.
That should tell you something.
IRfan,
Kamal did promise, before the release of the movie, that he would release the BGM as a CD. May be if enough people persisted, he would keep his promise. May be this is just wishful thinking, but worth the try:-)

Raj,
The review on Tamil.com is for 'Bharathi'.
It says Raja's music is the soul of the movie. 'intha padaththin aathma enalaam Illyaraajavin isaiyai'
You need Murasu Anjal to read the review.

When I made my first review in this forum on Barathi, I made these statements, "The genuis is there in bits and pieces". I would like to take that back. After somemuch of media praises, I gave the album an another silent and unbiased hearing. I truly accept whatever the media has praised about IR. One eg the mesmerizing flute piece in the first interlude of the song "mayil poola punnu onnu.....".

Swami,
Most of the praises were for the re-recording of Bharathi, I guess. By the way according to aaramthinai, after the excellent reviews in almost all magazines it seeme like Bharathi has picked up. i dunno how far it is true?

Yes truth and Sai ! Ur right!
As long as song goes in the film Illayavan there are good numbers which got wasted ! But as looking on the current trend Ir is working with loads of enthu again, with good films like Bharathy getting its due respect , which is highly dangerous for the people in the field...!

truth or whoever u are,
I dont care to read any sort of reviews in tamilcinema and even if i do i dont give them a serious thought. And just because tamilcinema writes positive reviews about a IR film it doesnt mean that i will start supporting their views if that is what u implied.

Good songs + hopeless movies is nothing unusual for IR (remember Karumbu vil or Gramathu athyayam or Ninaivellam Nithya or....) However, if someone got irritated with a lousy movie, he can throw muck on those responsible rather than rating IR's music (in the case of Ilayan, the songs) as listless:-(

I was about to post that `mayil pOla' reminded me of the classic `inji iduppazhagA'! Then I read fan(Srikanth?)'s review :
Maiil pola ponu onu Sung by Bhavadharani.,
Has an interesting chord progression. The song moves to a major chord in the pallavi., there is harmonium kind of sound following the saranam. All these remind me of "inji idupazaga", the Sandam is very close to inji idupazaga, and some what has the similar feel too
An interesting coincidence indeed!
Another critical observation: The song `agnikkunju' has a similar feel (sandham or melody?) of the usual rendering of the folk song `nandha vanaththil Or ANdi, avan nAlARu mAdhamAikkuyavanai vENdi, kondu vandhAn oru thONdi, adhai koothAdikkoothAdippOttudaiththANdi' (funny Raja chose KJY to render this simple number)
Still the trademark rhythm of Raja makes this song homely to hear:-)

My order of liking of 'Bharathi' songs:
1) Nalladhor Veenai (for the soulful rendering & orchestration)
2) Ethilum Ingu (for the raga selection & interludes, terrific lyric of course)
3) Bharatha Samudayam (for the 1st BGM) - pls hear the sound of waves at the start!!
4) Vande Matharam (for the orchestration)
5) Ninnai Charan (for the rendering & orchestration)
6) Mayil Pola (for the rhythm and simpleness)
7) Nirpathuve (for the mellowness)
8) Kelada (for music)
Can somebody explain how Nalladhor Veenai is picturised? Why did IR chose the 'star speckling' sound durng the saranam?
