I just saw a colleague holding a CD containing all the songs of the following films in mp3 format (in addition to AP and recent films of other MDs):
Sethu
Kannukkul Nilavu
Hey Ram
Thirunelveli
Kakkaichiraginile
He has bought this from Bangalore Majestic for Rs 120! I saw someone cribbing about IR's albums not having a good sale and that's why producers are not after him...If that's true, then this craze for Raja's songs (that form almost 20-25% of this mp3 CD, which is quite a big market share as per today's economics in the country) is confusing...
Hence IR's popularity is still unquestionable, but marketing may not be good enough...in any case, cassette sales has never been his no.1 priority at any point of career, IMO!

Read somewhere recently that Rudraiyya ('Gramathu Athiyayam' fame)is making a new film - music based love story. Can anybody inform here if IR is signed up for this?
TIA.

Is it the same Rudraiah who made the immortal "Aval appadithhaan" ?

Venkatesh,
I too read that (in Kumudam i think), but the interviewer says sthg like "time has changed even ppl like rudrayya who gave avaL appadiththAn to churn out usual stuff"
If making some quick bucks were his motive, the Md of the movie wud surely be SAR or Deva :-)

Thanks for the link, looks like IR has decided not to score for Tamil Movies now a days (even for the few people who bugs him) J

I think The market has got nothing to do with IR's non-popularity. Like one of my friend says the Tamil Film industry is a very 'sentimental' field. If a few films of a particular MD flops then nobody would even think of booking the MD for the next film. Contrast this with the time when every tamil producer would force Raja into singing atleast one song in the movie because it was considered good luck.
This goes to show how foolish the entire film industry is and what place talent and skill plays in this field. I feel Raja needs a big break - a successful film (again!) and that too from a film done by a relatively new director with some path-breaking story and techinique - then everything will change again. But at this current juncture will it happen?. I see no new ideas coming up - everbody tows the same old story line and trash movie-making - there seems to be dearth of talents

Sethu is a commercially hit movie, but ur raja needs "break" in every movie?

Compared to kannukkul nilavu, Hey Ram, Thirunelveli, karisakattu poove Sethu is big hit commercially.
Even now, the song is coming in Vijai T.V Top 20 whereas others are not.(apart from Karisakattu poove in No.7)

For the new movie by Yuvan shankar Raja, Vairamuthu is the lyricist.
I read it in Vikatan or kumudam this week. Also VM attended KR's wedding reception.. though did not talk to IR.
Looks like after the ladai with ARR, VM is back with Raja clan and we are likely to see more of good old combo.. Oh my GOD..IR and VM again what a day it will be...!!!

Dear IR Fans
I have been regularly reading this forum like almost more than a year. Now I feel this discussion on IR should be stopped that is best way we can respect him. Nowadays no. of readers to this forum has been almost little.
As a IR fan its hard for me to digest ,but it is fact that his days are over,he is now a untouchable as far as tamil film industry.
I also request MR IR to retire from film industry.
His music has been totally uninspiring for the past few years and is getting worse, even new comers music sounds better,I think he has not yet realised this fact that you need have a good PR and also new approach to music otherwise you wont survive, look at his musics audio quality ,very poor and he neither have a good assistant or a good lyricst,so farewell my Mr. Raja, the good service you can do to ur fans is by not composing anymore for films. And hope he realizes the fact that one should not be too proud and arrogant!!
You can compose more symphony and albums(Who is going to listen anyaway :( )
Even the good effort by Raajangham guys is a rather too late. Only people of yester generation living in US likes his songs. No one bothers or care for his music anymore.
So
Adieu,Bye bye Illayaraja.
Kindly stop producing music!!

Unnmai Virumbi,
yep it is true. raja's music is long forgotten in parts of india. people from "yester generation" migrated to US and other parts of the world, are trying to hold his songs and relate it to their nostalgia.it is 100% true.
MS,
yennanga ethu.....i thought you belonged to the yester generation.....naisa latest generation'kku varalaam endru parkareengala? ;-)

Hello Unmai virumbi,
I hope you are not right. Your words "
even new comers music sounds better" is totally wrong. Still I feel that IR's music is fresh and new, where as all the others without any shame just lift and copy. So don't even compare IR with others.
It is just that we got bored and want a change that is all. Like what happened to MSV when IR took him over. When SPB took over from TMS, Hariharan took over from SPB. So this is so common, and these changes come when people gets bored and needs a change that is all.
And now the movies are all commercialised and is more a business than art, so these things are inevitable, but if you notice cleanly who ever is taking a sensible movie and wants that to be a great form of art, goes to only IR and not even ARR. So this proves that IR is great still in quality.
So it is us who are bored and wants a change which is again so common.
