There are some mistakes in the article. It mentions that Rajasekaran thought of this
idea to make a film on Bharathy while he
was a collector of Tiruchi. Actually
it was Tiruchur.

I REPEAT!
Hello www, (also known as Ottawa Tamil Radio)!
I can't fathom why you are posting links that are irrelevant to this thread?
First it was Doubles, then Kuberan and now Maayi (Mazhi???)! What's up?
This is a thread on Ilayaraja's new releases.

I really liked IRs "Ilayavan". It has 4 (out of 5) excellent songs.
The best song IMO is "Nilavin Amudhu" by Unnikrishnan and Bhavadha. It's a great composition beautifully orchestrated and well sung.
The next best is "Vatta Nilave" by SPB and Swarnalatha, a lilting composition. The composition really brings to life the mood od the song. I don't think anyone else other than SPB could do justice to the song. I'm not a big fan of swarnalatha.
Another great number is "En Idhayam" by Unnikrishnan and Chithra. Great combo of mridhangam and the more modren instruments for orchestration beautifully blended. An addictive number.
Another excellent solo by SPB is "En Jeevanin". Unique composition especially the pallavi building to a crescendo. It is a soulful rendition - and once again SPB does it better than anyone else can. He makes the job so easy for the actor...all the actor needs to do is show up because SPB demonstrates such emotion in the song.
The last song by Mano is OK.
Overall, a great album for the 4 songs mentioned above.

I read thro this thread...
Everybody seems to appreciate IR's music...
Frankly, despite being a Ilaiyaraaja fan(atic) i feel IR has not done justice to this film...
"Nirpathuvae nadappathuvae" sounds more like a "medai naadagam" song . Though people might argue that its set to Bharathi's times, i feel that this song except for the pallavi is lacking jeevan..
Same is the case with "Kelada" by Rajkumar Bharathy..
Thers some consolation in Bombay Jayashree's "Ninai charan" though..
The best song in the album could easily be picked as "Mayil Pola" by Bhavtharini..lovely folk..
i've not heard the other songs...
But for IR's name i don't think "Bharathi" is worth a buy.

To all those DFers who say "excellent songs", "vintage IR" and all that stuff about his recent songs,
I wonder whether you actually say so because :
* you don't hear the songs by any other MD of today, or
* you are overjoyed and overcome by nostalgia when you come across IR using some instruments/orchestration that is a rarity these days, or
* you are overwhelmed when you come across an IR song with good recording, or
* you have'nt heard his songs of the 70s and 80s to know what vintage stuff is and what excellent means (even if they did'nt have the recording quality of today), or
* you are so taken by the person thanks to his music a few years ago, that you refuse to believe/accept that he is'nt delivering that quality anymore, or
* you are plain thankful that the genius of the 80s still scores music at all, or
* you actually liked the song.
Well, I for one, can hardly find his songs to be anywhere near what he composed in the 70s and 80s. Call it mental block, call it nostalgia, call it whatever you want, but I just can't call his songs of today anywhere near "vintage" stuff. True, there are surprises like "Guru" once in a while, but they have become very few and far between.
Tell me, am I missing something here ?

Viswa: Your post automatically qualifies you for being branded an "ARR Fan". You will keep this honorary (NOT honorable) title until you post questioning ARR's talents. In which case you will be dragged into the residual category - YES! Deva Fan!:-)
Welcome to the sparring!

Viswa,
When you are refering to other MD's songs,
do you mean that you are finding those to be
better than the current IR songs? During
my recent India trip, I was getting to hear
lots of other MDs compositions(in bus etc)
and I was feeling quite uncomfortable hearing
to some copied music etc in the form of songs.
In the midst of such a musical trend, IR is
still continuing to compose melodious songs.
One example I wanted to give is Kanna Unnai
Thedukiraen. I was really amazed by the excellent
songs composed in that album by IR and wished
that he gets to compose more such albums.
And with the current musical taste, IR has
to adapt himself without compromising on
the melody aspect. That is what I think, he is
trying to do and many people(like me) seem
to appreciate that in this forum.
And are we getting to see the variety in
tamil films nowadays which used to be there
till early 90s atleast? The answer is no.
Movies like Bharathy are an exception but will
they be commercial successes?

there is no change except for the technology.

Athi !
I was expecting you here... ;-)
When you are refering to other MD's songs,
do you mean that you are finding those to be
better than the current IR songs?
I don't mean that they are better or worse ! All I asked was, whether (people like) you rate IR's songs the way you do, after listening to other MDs songs or not.
I was getting to hear
lots of other MDs compositions

Glad to hear you heard other MDs' songs (albeit with lot of discomfort), but tell me, do you rate IR's songs as excellent because (you believe) they are not copied while others' songs are ?
Well, if you rate IR's recent songs to be excellent, because you actually like them so much, then good for you. But if it is because of other indirect reasons, then it's a different story.
rajaG,
You bet ! :-) Tonsure and censure are there for the asking... not my first time, though ! :-))

Sorry for the digression. He (Mani) has to do this since Alaipayuthe music was pathetic.
I dont know what prevents hom from rejoining with IR. (all his previous hits had IR's genius which clearly and explicitly overshadowed Mani's class (if at all he had/has any)).

I don't want to get into a fist fight here. But I just read posters like rajaG and others giving Athi a big lecture on his posting in another thread as to his views on ARR etc.
But I see posters like Viswa cast aspersions on people who like IR albums here as having nostalgia or not listening to other MD's albums etc. Just because in his opinion the current albums of IR does not stand up to his previous ones. I for one totally disagree that it is just a perception than reality. However, I am disappointed that people who gave Athi a lecture in another thread are pouring compliments over Viswa's posting. It is unfortunate but I think posting anything anti-IR is what the in-thing is in this forum.
But the problem with this forum is that. Instead of people just posting their opinion of albums try to convince of others of their opinions or cast aspersions as to why certain people like certain music (nostalgia etc.). Musical taste like everything else is individual in nature. That is why, like anything else there are segments of people with different tastes.
I for one have never been impressed by ARR's music. I would listen to some of the albums that people go 'ga ga' over and think "is this what all the fuss about". But I do not go about challenging other's opinions and tastes because it is ridiculous. For whatever reason, that segment of people love that type of music.
I think this forum would be a great place if people state their opinion about the music (positive or negative) but understand what may sound genuinely great to one may sound totally the opposite to another.
If you do not like bharathy or Ilayavan or recent IR's albums do not buy it or listen to it. Like I do, I do not buy ARR's albums. But it is an indvidual taste. To consider one's taste superior or inferior, modern or old time, sophisticated or uneducated just because one finds someone's music good that you disagree is naive.
Arularacan, I had the same feelings after "vellai nirathu oru poonai" lines..unbelievable.
