it is a rough translation - not a leteral one. i dont think it's from ashtapathi; i think it's from soundarya lahari.

Maestro Ilayaraja has tuned so many cinesongs
with sanskrit slokas as "virutham"/ "Dyana Slokam"
For Example: AVIGnana nandasmihira in "Nathiiyil Aadum Poovanam (Kaathal Oviam), Sivaha sakthya in
"Janani Janani" (Adi Sankarar). Let Raja tune TiruVasagam also in the same style. If it is tuned with WCM then that will become more or less a Dabbankuthu. But our Ilayaraaja can make even make dabbankuthu to reach millions. Hats off to Isaignani

ever produced. I am too fascinated over this new
vanture of Isainyaani. Long live Raja and his music.
All the best for a great composition. I am
sure Raja is going to crack it like anything.

I think irrespective the target he could reach, he should produce whatever he can deliver constructively to the society. It is then left to the society to take it and beneify from it. If anyone makes a geniune and sincere attempt to understand he/she would benefit from it.
I think IR should eventually reduce scoring hopeless film numbers and concentrate on constructive albums like this with out caring for the reach of it.

To Karthik:
I do not know why you brought in this ‘Iyer’ related statement here. But having done so, some things are to be made very clear.
This note is nothing against the ‘Brahmin’ community. Just a collection of related facts.
The reason is to reduce your worry that the burden of propping up Ilayaraaja’s ‘Thiruvasagam’ effort might fall on your community’s shoulders.
1. Thiruvasaagam is one of the ‘Thamizh Thirumurai’. As you might be aware, there are twelve such treasures collectively called ‘Panniru Thirumurai’. As such it belongs to all Tamil Hindus. It is related to Brahmin community because one sect (Iyer not Iyengar) worship Sivaperumaan. That’s it. There is a sea of difference between this and your comparision with Gayathri Manthiram.
2. It is indeed a moving experience to listen to ‘Thamizh Thirumurai’, in most of the temples in the early morning. Off late there have been some popularity among the ‘Saiva Samayam’ related middle class pockets – Thanks to cassettes from Dharmapuram Swaminathan (Dheiveega BhAvam / Ucharippu !!) and others.
3. At this point it is important to mention the History, that Brahmin Community (not the present century – old time) had been responsible to drive away ‘Thamizh Thirumurai’ from the centrestage it enjoyed in a Hindu Tamilian’s life. Through a systematic onslaught, Sanskrit was imposed into Tamil Temples, Tamil Marriages, Grehapravesam, Ganabathi Homam and other poojas / functions. Also, everyone very well knows the fate of Tamil Classic Music (in Tamil Nadu !!)….
The last point means that your worry is like Pakistan joining the coalition against terrorism. (I am also worried that after twenty years, you may state that Ilayaraaja himself belongs to your community – because he did this ‘Thiruvasagam’ music.)
No Hardfeelings please.

total insult thiruvasagam symphony style?....probably doing all this for attention. if it's a success the credit should go to his 'hungarian' orchestra
- From: Kupps (@ 156.153.255.126)
on: Thu Nov 1 01:10:34 EST 2001
now sarita, i have two questions
1) "total insult" -- for whom? to Symphony style (or) thiruvasagam (or) to you?
2) "if it's a success the credit should go to his 'hungarian' orchestra" -- so when it becomes success the "total insult" is wiped out right.
IMHO, your concern would be geniune if the final outcome kills/alters the mood, meaning, language, accent of thiruvasagam. We just cannot pass any judgement before anything happens.

Rev.Jegath Gaspar- For TAMIL MAIYAM
Thiruvasakam in Symphonic Fantasy – A unique musical adventure by Maestro Ilaiyaraaja.
It takes the musical genius of Maestro Ilaiyaraaja to concatenate the devotional spiritualism contained in the classical Tamil poetry of Thiruvasakam with the ethereal harmony of the most accomplished of Western classical music composers. This challenging enterprise has never before been attempted in the realms of Tamil music.
The world’s first premiere of a musical recording, combining the cadenza of this inspirational Tamil spiritual literature supported by delectable carnatic music and accompanied by the famed Hungarian Symphony Orchestra, is getting ready for the enjoyment of aficionados and music lovers in all parts of the world.
Tamil Maiyam, a not for profit charitable organisation is collaborating with Mr Ilaiyaraaja in promoting this ground breaking venture to further the arts and culture of the Tamil people.Tamil Maiyam is also committed to serious research on Tamil language and society. It is headquartered at Chennai, India.
At present Mr Ilaiyaraaja is working on a major aspect of this project to write the score for selected songs from the Thiruvasakam in the Western symphonic format. He is the only Asian so far to have been accorded the rare honour of performing a symphony at the Royal Albert Hall, London with the London Philharmonic Orchestra. There is no doubt that this Thiruvasakam in Symphonic Fantasy will be the ultimate fulfillment of his dream to coalesce the best of Tamil and Western classical music to the discernment of the modern international stage. Having composed more than 5000 songs, scored music for 825 movies and conducted countless number of concerts this project according to him has been ‘his prayer’ for a long time.
This is perhaps the first ever attempt to write Indian music using Western symphonic language without compromising the much celebrated beauty and aesthetics of the former. It cannot be just fusion, for that will be crude. It will be an audacious synthesis that draws on the best of both systems; thus producing a celebration of creativity. Why does Mr. Ilaiyaraaja want to attempt something as complex as this undertaking? It is like asking why men want to climb Mount Everest or walk to the North Pole. It is a challenge for heroes and great human beings to do the extra-ordinary and Ilaiyaraaja wants to leave his musical landmark for generations of Tamils to come. It is indeed refreshing, he says, that a Catholic Priest like Fr Jegath Gaspar Raj is in the front line to internationally promote Thiruvasakam in this seminal format.
The Thiruvasakam has been chosen for this eclectic project because of its spiritual depth and poetic beauty. No one can fail to be stirred by its profound emotions while reading the verses. They have touched for generations the hearts and minds of the vast majority of Tamil speaking people. Has the longing of the human soul for purity, peace and divine fellowship ever found worthier expression?
A number of leading directors of music and international musicians have paid their tributes to Mr Ilaiyaraaja and sent their best wishes for the success of this project. His Excellency, The Prime Minister of India has described it as noteworthy and sent his best wishes.
The music album is due to be released on October 18, 2003 at a formal function in Chennai. For more details please visit : www.thiruvasakaminsymphony.com or Contact Rev. Jegath Gaspar at 00-91-44-31041071 or 00 91 9840378334 or 00 91 44 55873355. Email : thiruvasakam@hotmail.com
