I read with interest the ‘interview’ given by IR. The contradictions that were apparent to the interviewer and to the casual reader, are not necessarily so, if one looks at what IR says in the context of his own life and what he stands for. I do not blame the interviewer, as he/she could have approached the meeting from the point of view of the movie music, which, no doubt, is the relevant occasion. IR has taken it to a higher level of interaction, different plane, which the interviewer could not comprehend. When I re-read the interview I was reminded of a Tolstoy story that had been retold by J D Salinger in one of his books. The story goes like this: (I am writing from memory). The person who is in charge of the king’s stable became old and so he requested the king to appoint a new person to the position. When asked for a suggestion he recommended someone who he thought was skilled. The king appointed that person and sent him to look for horses on his behalf. After extensive tour the new appointee came back saying he saw a black stallion in a distant land that was fit horse for the king. The king duly sent his men to fetch the horse. When the horse was fetched it turned out to be a dun colored mare. So the king went to consult his old stable man about the selection, the old man exclaimed: “Is he really that great? In making sure of the essentials he loses sight of the exterior. So good a judge of horses is he that he can judge something better than horses.” The horse turned out to be a superlative one. (J D Salinger’s book “Raise High the Roof Beam Carpenters”).

The press release must have been like TN assembly house :)) Though I fully agree with Kiru on today's journalism, I feel sad to see Ilaiyaraaja's responses. It all started in TN govermaent's function for Kannadasan in 1997. Off late, Raaja's interviews and public speech are not going in the right direction, IMO.

I don't know why you guys are making such a big hue and cry over Ilayaraja's responses. He hasn't insulted *anybody* with his replies.
In my opinion, although his statements (not here, but in general) seem arrogant, in many ways, he is a pretty simple man. He respects of all people, Laxmikant Pyarelal a lot, enough to be inspired by their compositions. Although he is so talented, he doesn't seem conscious of it - I for one do not think he values his own music a lot and I'm reasonably sure about this from his rather careless approach to recording, sound, voices. Look at it - some of his best violin and flute pieces are played pathetically (eg. Paruvame pudhiya paadal paadu).
He is in film music strictly for business - he doesn't derive a great deal of creative satisfaction from it. I think he really means it when he says he is nothing compared to Tyagaraja and Mozart.

I am looking forward to IR and ARR working together...like MSV and IR...it would be even better if all the 3 could work on a project....this would cover the entire history and today of TFM...one thing about ARR I've not read (to my knowledge)..giving any credit or appreciation to IR....like I heard that when MSV was irked about the waves IR was making during his early years, IR calmly walked up to him and touched his feet and left. Doesn't mean that ARR should do the same...I think his religion won't permit him...but an acknowledgement would do fine...enlighten me if he has done that already,

Dear Cosmician,
I heard that in one function arranged by Gangaiamaran, ARR participated, fell at IR's feet and presented a ring to IR. IR, not expecting this, presented his own ring to IR.
I saw Ganagaiamaran telling about this in a TV program.

Cosmician,
IR did not accept that gold ring because IR does not wear gold or silver rings/chains...it is his principle...He does not even wear a watch !!

Thanks for the information Prasad and UVII.
PK and HCIRF....
IR is a kind of Vedantist...a sort of follower of Ramana Maharishi's philosophy...where the 'I' - that is your ego is reduced to 0...still with me ?
So his answers from that state of mind will be strange and look foolish to those of us who are not exposed to that kind of philosophy.
But I think that his answers are really cool...way 2 go IR ....that's an attitude I like - bold and straight.
Mediocre MDs would have answered differently....the interviewer was looking for juicy stuff but IR unsettled him and had the last laugh.

it sounds real pathetic, fellows asking stupid questions to
the great.there has to b some sensibility and technical soundness
while questioning greats like ilairaaja, sivaji, kamalhasan etc.
idiots who never know a bit on the subject blindly ,posting
questions 'what u think of todays music, todays acting of vijay
vadivelu, madhavan(who cant even express any feeling)etc'
only persons who r really knowledged and know something on the
subject can question such greats.
there is a big gap between their level of thinking and silly
questions asked to them.when people like prem - ramesh
(sembulum-publications) are able to interview IR sucessfully in a
long schedule ,it only shows ill equipped fellows cannot question
the greats.
fool he was -that fellow who asked views of IR on MTV and V channel
where often we find animals posing like human spoiling the society,
though there are some good albums telecast on those channels.
ASK ILAIRAAJA
1 WHAT IS YOUR ROLE IN PROMOTING DHEIVEEGA ISAI
DIVINE SONGS TO MUSIC COMMUNITY?
ASK OTHERS(DEVA ,ARR) WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TOWARDS THAT ANGLE?
2 ASK ILAIRAAJA
WHATS THE SECRECY OF GIVING NEVERENDING MELODIES TILL DATE FOR
25 YEARS (BHARATHI FOR EXAMPLE) THAT MELTS LISTENERS
U FELLOW WHO ASKED STUPID QUESTIONS TO IR DONT TAME URSELF HITTING
UR FACE ON THE ROCK

There was no contradiction in what IR said in the interview - 'I am music and I dont know music' . Lets take an entity, say milk, if you ask milk what you think about salt, it is gonna say, yeah I get curdled in its presence, if you ask what you think about milk ? The answer is unknown.. IR is talking about self-awareness.. He is way too ahead of these reporters (and some posters here :) ) on logic !!!
http://www.aaraamthinai.com/ilakkiyam/thittivasal/mar30_Meeral.asp
See the above article where he is really lucid. He explains resonance and then uses that analogy how his music would resonate in the hearts of listener. I really liked the explanation how somebody may like or not like certain music..when he writes/sings 'isaiyil thodanguthamma viraha nAtakamE'..if you are not tuned into this ..this will be just another song..

Well Said Kiru
It also goes to show about your understanding of our spiritual heritage/vedanta to an extent.
I know this is not the place or forum but what you said is correct.
Another analogy along your lines is that
if we take a Doll made of Salt and immerse in sea water then the individual distinction between these two entities 'salt' and 'water' no longer exists they become 'One' And IR being spiritually far advanced has said precisely that. As usual our ignorant reporters, dont understand any of that. I firmly believe that music is a self expression for genius like IR it is a natural one just as one breathing or heartbeats its an automatic response and part of the system

Dear Sabesan,
This is what Gangai Amaran told in TV. He also told that ARR, when contacted to for invitation, enquired whether IR will be present? GangaiAmaran, at that time could not recognize the significance of the question and answered him like any other question.
Regarding IR not wearing ring, I have no idea about that. But GangaiAmaran told that IR presented the ring he was wearing to ARR on the occassion.

Prasad,
Well this is what happened..ARR presented the ring to IR...IR kindly refuse it and presented the same ring to ARR...It is NOT IR presented the ring he was wearing to ARR on the occassion.

Another misinterpretation of facts...
The above news bit says that IR for the first time sings in other MD's music(YSR)..
