such a great movie. But, somewhere it went wrong. There was some great talent involved with this movie. First you had Bharathiraja, one of tamil cinema's greatest directors, poet/writer Sujatha (one of the best writers), a happening Karthik, a newface - Ranjitha, a international cast, and best of all IR's last score for Bharathiraja. But as the saying goes, too many good cooks spoiling the broth. I happened to catch this movie yesterday and wanted to give out my opinion. It reminded me a lot of "Lagaan". This has to be one of those rare movies that had a chance to be a classic if Bharathiraja had handled the story in a different fashion. IR, though, didn't let Bharathiraja down in anyway. "Maniye Manikuyile" and "Sandhana Marbiley" are some of the best songs I've heard from IR. What do you guys think?

I wish you guys would stop blaming Karthik for "Nadodi Thendral's" failure. Karthik, in his prime, was in my opinion only second to Kamal in acting. Look at his performances in Mani Ratnam's "Agni Natchathiram" and Fazil's "Varusham 16". Two unforgettable performances from Karthik. Bharathiraja, most likely, told Karthik to act in such a silly fashion for "Nadodi Thendral". Ultimately it is the director that has control of what he wants to see on the screen. Mani and Fazil extracted the best from Karthik and knew exactly what they wanted. BR simply didn't. He let everyone down with this film which had great potential. IR, of course the genius he is, comes through again for BR.

I agree with Rajiv..Karthik is one of the most talented actor in TF.He doest overact like many others..Ex:that very difficult role in Gokulathil Seethai..
Bad screenplay and climax spoiled Nadodi thendral IMO..
And a great combo(BR & IR) split temporarily for whatever reasons beest known to themselves.
And as usual another great song of IR was cut in the film..Oru kanam oru yugamaga..IR and Janaki..wht a song...beautiful interludes..

Karthik is the Most Talented Artist next to Kamal..
He performs any Role with ease
eg: gokulathil seethai, ponnumani& UEK&Mouna Raagam
H
People Who r blaming Karthik have not Seen any of his films i think.

Hi Guys.. in 1992, I was really expecting to see how the songs were picturized, after hearing them repeatedly in audio. On 14th April, DD showed the `Maniye manikuyile' song in the program `Putham Pudhiya Paadal'. Despite excellent music by IR and nice camera by Kannan, something was found missing. Ranjitha acted in the movie without blouse and she was looking gorgeous (she was the tallest actress too at that time!!).. it seemed that the director was more interested in exposing her hips and back, rather than focussing on the picturization.
There was stiff competition at that Tamil New Year.. Several big films were released (Chemparuthi, Singara Velan, etc.), so people might not have been very interested in watching this period movie..

And, regarding US people appreciating Lagaan, I wish the forever-attacking ARR fans to remember that IR was invited to compose Symphony in England, way back in 1994. I like both IR and ARR equally, though now I would pay to get an ARR album.

Man, I sincerely hope that BR and IR work together again in the future. If not, "Nadodi Thendral" was one fantastic way to go out for IR.

Read an interview of sujatha's....he says ''the story I gave BR was actually about the assasination of a collector, but BR wanted to & changed it into a regular love-triangle story''.
Any of u think this might b a reason for the movie's failure?

Yes bk. Sujatha is right on the money. I knew that Bharathiraja had to be behind "Nadodi Thendral's failure.

I sincerely feel that IR's music for "Nadodi Thendral", the last time BR and IR worked together, was their best. Great songs and mind-blowing BGM.
