Megam,
akshi is a sanskrit word that means eye I believe.(Meenakshi = fish-like eyes). Not to be confused with atchi of tamil which has a different meaning.

hehehewalrus,
meenatchi is defenitely a fusion of two tamil words 'meen' meaning 'fish' and 'atchi' meaning 'rule'. meen + atchi shud hav been derived from the pandiya kingdom whose flag had the symbol 'fish' hence the goddess of their capital madurai was named 'meenatchi'.
i dont think sanskrit language pundits does comparison of eye to fish. they do compare the eyes of a female to that of a doe or the star. hence they do hav names like 'nayanthara' or 'mrignayani'. while tamil has an equivalent for 'mrignayani' as 'maanvizhiyaal' or 'maanvizhi' i havnt come across names meaning that compares the eye to an star. star itself is called 'vinmeen' meaning fish floating on the sky.

rajasaranam, look for 'fish' in this article. You will get it. http://www.madurai.com/meenakshi.htm

i think ur justification shud be right. following the two links below i found that infact one of the meanings in sanskrit for 'eye' means 'Aksi' but 'fish' dont hav an entry rhyming with 'meen' out of the 40 and odd entries. but frm the tamil lexicon it is evident that one of 200 odd meanings for 'fish' is 'meen' and one of meaning for 'eye' is 'akki'. this akki or akshi or aankh[in hindi] shud hav roots in some earlier language or they cud be frm either languages which got into the other.
though this is clear i seriuosly doubt about the other possibility like the 'sanskritisation' which changed many of original tamil names into sanskritised version during the medieval periods cud hav changed the entire meaning of 'meenatchi' to 'meenakshi'. this doubt arises frm the notion that phoenetics like 'sha' and 'ha' were introduced frm sanskrit to tamizh, and also during pandiya kingdom there was not much sanskritisation happening here and it all began with the later Chozha kingdom.

Stupid thread !!!! SPB was rejected by Bollywood for the very same reason why Rafi was rejected by kollywood and Tollywood.

The reason is the differing tastes of North and South Indians. As the south indians demand a full fledged voice (good at base mid and high octaves), the north indians demand screechy nasal, boyish voices good at medium and high pitches.

I agree with your points, but please do not insult the legends like latha ji & Asha Ji and compare them with current array of hindi jokers!
