Fazil and IR

Fazil and Ilaiyaraja have produced some of the greatest music. Infact, Fazil is probably the only director who has stuck with IR while others have come and gone (Mani Ratnam, Bharathiraja, etc.,.) What do you guys think is their best movie together quality wise and music wise?

My opinion:

Quality wise : Varusham 16
Music wise: Varusham 16

Varusham 16 has unbelievably fantastic songs, great acting and first-class direction by Fazil. What do you guys think?

  I think the Fazil telugu movie is "killer". I am not sure though. Anyway, music for this film is IR and as usual there are three mind blowing songs in the movie..

  I love that song from pappayude swandham appoos. It was really good in tamil, even though it was dubbed. I think Janaki sang both versions, but Chithra sang it on stage in the IR felicitation function in Trivandrum. I wonder if there is a tamil version on the net...I could not get the album(tamil version) anywhere here.

  As far as those two go, personally I feel KJY has got a voice that suits sad songs. There are many examples like 'kanavu kaanum' for instance. On the other hand, he is not all that great on peppy songs.

  I'm not sure, but I think "Poomukhapadiyil Nineyum kaththu" is a film by Fazil and has IR as MD. It has a great song "Konchi Karayalle" by KJY & SJ. I'm also not sure if "Olangal" was a movie by Fazil...it has 3 mindblowing songs by Raaja. These songs can be heard at musicindiaonline site.

  Varusham 16 is undoubtedly, in my opinion, the best movie from the Fazil - IR. Loved "Gangai Karai....." and "Pazhai Mudhil Cholai". True classics.

  "Poomukhappadiyil Ninneyum Kaathu" was directed by Bhadran, popular later for his "Iyer the Great". Apart from the lovely "Konchi Karayalle" it has what I consider one of IR's greatest duets "Poonkaatrinodum kiligalodum". Bhadran had shot the songs well, I still remember vividly the way the music for this song perfectly blended with the shot of water cascading down a staircase!
  
  "Olangal" was by Balu Mahendra; its score again was ahead of its times. He followed it up with "Oomakkuyil" and "Yathra", a trilogy that featured some of IR's best work in BGM as well as songs.

  OLangaL had `thumbi vA' by SJ which has the same tune as `sangathil pAdAdha kavidhai' in TFM.
  
  yAthra had some of IR's biggest hits...`yamunE ninnude nenjil' was being played everywhere when I first came to Palakkad...`thannannam thAnannam thALathil Adi' too was very popular (tune somewhat resembles `pootukkaL pOttalum' song in TFM)
  
  Both films were by BM.
  
  yaaro, PSA is by IR for sure. And this SJ song was so popular that it was written about in almost all MY magazines at that time. Infact Malayala Manorama's weekly edition had an exclusive article on IR, which started with the very lines of this song:-)

  great thread! keep going guys. If you could provide the complete details/as much as you can about IRs work/acheivements/awards in malayalam and telegu FM as well with proper links of songs and articles that would be greatly appreciated. I hope it deserves a separate thread for that if not exist one already. I dont think rAjAngam provides all those info well do they?

  MIO website is quite confusing-for PSA(what does this mean/.)it lists the first song (ayiram kannumay) -jerry amaldev as MD and for the song nettiyil poovulla swarna MB srinivasan as the MD.These 2 songs are clearly not by IR,looking at the tune and orchestration.The others ,ofcourse , are by IR.Did this movie have more than 1 MD?

  There'a a movie called "Aa Rathri" starring Mammooty which has a nice number by IR and sung by SJ. I would think those are some of IR's earliest works in Malayalam. Was "Chanakyan" by IR ? I can't recall...

  Suresh - Mohan sithara's debut movie is probably "onnu mudhal poojyam vare". I remember reading this MFM thread when I asked for a lovely melody tuned by hima nd sung by chitra - "ponnum thingaL koottum maane".

  dhooram arike has an unusual song by KJY: Malarthoppithil Manithennalay Killikonjaalay vaa. also, Priyane Uyir Neeye a duet KJY/SJ. Both vintage IR. Yathra, never even heard. Aa Raathri has two special songs: Ee Peelimadhan Chaarusayil neendi varu, by KJY/SJ the other is: Kiliye Kiliye. these above 4 songs of IR to Mal films. The surprise is: Salil Choudhury songs are released in compilation by KMV and in Dubai I got hold of all Salil movies in 4 cassettes! But, IR not even one Mal compilation. That is what is not understandable. In Dubai, however, I did get one compilation but did not include the above songs, but everything else! Any comments on this demand for IR mal songs in Kerala and so also of MSV's none. MSV has give seriously amazing melodies famous among them: - Veena Poove Kumaraande Veena Poove; Naadan Paatindey Madi seela (i tell you there is no song like this from any composer! I cry when i listen to this song. it evokes amazing feelings about flora and fauna dn culture of Kerala (not so much the people, I am sorry!) Nilagiriyude Sahigale (what Maancholai Kilithano did to Jayachandran in Tamil, that song brought out the incredible PJ in Mal) and many more songs in Mal that amazes me as to the sheer number and power of MSV's melodies! What about MK Arjunan, another genius forgotten like A T Ummer. Only Devarajan, Baburaj and Salil Choudhury seemed to find a place in Malayalee memory!

  yaaro, Yes, `Ayiram kaNNumAi, kathirundha nenhumAi' is by Jerry Amaldev! Not for PSA, though, it was for `nOkkatha dhoorathu kaNNum nattu' (the MY original of `poovE poochooda vA').
  
  Similarly, `nethiyil poovuLLa, swarna chiraguLLa pakshi' is from another Fazil film which featured Mammooty & Suhasini and the MD was MPS (the title of this film too was poetic, though my memory fails, is it `maNivathooril Ayiram sivarAthirigaL?)
  
  Both were hit songs, from Fazil films, but neither from PSA nor by IR!

  Then how come they are in list of songs from PSA-did they get hold of some cd with all these songs and without going thru what is what uploaded the whole lot under PSA-that is probably the explanation.

  Digression:
  MSV is from the village `pARa' (elappuLLy) which is on the Palakkad to Pollachi road..it's almost TN border & should have been part of `Madras state' those days...MGR's koduvayoor too is close to Palakkad...great strides these people made in Chennai!

  IR-Fazil combo is definitely a treat! But I personally feel the only exception was Kilipechu Kaetkavaa - dont know why though!
  
  My favourites (song-wise, rather than film wise)
  
  1. Poove poochoodavaa (I like the Chithra version more)
  2. Poongaaviyam (Karpoora Mullai, fantastic song by KJY-PS-KSC combo. Susheela's and Chithra's voices gel so well)
  3. Chinnanjiru Kiliyae ('Kannukkul Nilavu' by Chithra - I have always wondered why this song was not that much of a hit!)
  4. Ofcourse, Bommu Kutti Ammavukku, Poovizhi vaasalilae, Varusham-16 songs are classics!

  Ravi, "Kili pechhu kekkavaa" pidikkalaiyaa?
  I feel it is one of the most underrated gems of IR.Please give a second hearing to songs like "vandhadhu vandhadhu" , "anbbe vaa arugile"
  (a very haunting tune) , "sivagaami nenaipinille". Iam sure you will like them. Idha maadiri ippo IR aala kooda compose panna mudyaadhu

  Naaradhar, true - the songs that you have mentioned are good ones - mesmerising kind! But I have always imagined a Fazil-IR combo to have songs by KSC & KJY. So this was a bit off the usual record. Esp in Kilipechu kaetkava, SJ's oldness in the voice shows, which I feel did not go well with the richness in the tunes/music.

  Common things in Fazil's tamil movies..
  Location wud be kerala most of the times
  Hero or other characters wud appear in Veshti(Mundu) atleast in on scene
  IR will be the MD and one or more song wud be given for KJY and Chitra
  No specific villian..only situations will be villian
