Most importantly, I feel it is time IR ventured out on creating songs or music more introspective in nature, you know, slower, deliberate concerto style and fewer of the catchy quick paced melody numbers. I think Vidyasagar is someone who is trying to do something of that nature, but is not quite effective. It is really noticeable in the interludes of Vidyasagar.
Symphonies are by nature somewhat introspective and it will be a revelation to see, if IR has really got into that mood, when the Symphony is within our reach soon.
Such introspective music will be practicable if we have the musicals/opera type theater performances. Something like the CATS, Phantom of the Opera, Jesus Christ Superstar or Marriage of the Figaro. I think a market for such kind of creativity have yet to emerge in India. Most of western classical music is devoted to romance and introspection.
However, if such themes arise, IR can really have a field time producing those one hour long albums which are slow in nature and have the basis for producing a theme that develop gradually. Aah, yes I remember the best example is the Miss World Contest for which IR composed music. However, that had short pieces with more emphasis given on dance tempo.
Just what I feel is what would be a change of pace for Illaiyaraja. What do you folks think?

The following is a reproduction of the mail chain between Madhan and Frontline regarding IR's Symphony. Since this would put to rest any assumptions and rumors about the symphony, I'll reproduce it here. I hope Madhan doesn't mind my doing this. I have given the letters in chronological order. Thanks on our behalf, Madhan for taking the initiative and getting some answers.

Subject: ENQUIRY REGARDING THE SYMPHONY COMPOSED BY
Maestro.Illayaraaja...............
Date: 26 February 1999 16:32
Dear Sir,
In the year 1993, the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra (RPO), London,
United
Kingdom, commissioned renowned composer from our country Mr.Illayaraaja to compose a full fledged SYMPHONY for them - accordingly, the SYMPHONY was composed by Mr.Illayaraaja and the RPO recorded the same under the conductor Sir.John Scott at London, during the month of JULY, 1993.
The September 10, 1993 issue of FRONTLINE, carried a TRIBUTE to the Maestro in this connection.
Five years have elapsed since then, but there is no news yet of this SYMPHONY and its release.
Sir, I would very much like to know as to the fate of this SYMPHONY composed by Mr.Illayaraaja for the RPO and recorded at London, in July1993.
Awaiting an early response from your good self eagerly.
With regards,
Sincerely Yours,
T.Madhan Raghavan,
Goa, India.
Friends, I have some authentic news here at last about the Symphony by our own Maestro.Illayaraaja....
I received the following E-mail from "THE FRONTLINE"..
From: Frontline frontline@thehindu.co.in
Dear Mr. Madhan Raghavan,
Thank you for your mail and your interest in Frontline's coverage.
We are told by Mr. A.S. Panneerselvan who wrote the article that the matter is caught up in a legal dispute over rights following the takeover of the company that undertook the recording by another company. It would appear that as a consequence the recording has not been commercially released yet.
Sincerely,
(P. Jacob)

Dear Sir,
Thank you very much for the information which millions of Illayaraaja's fans like me have been dying to know over the last 5 years.
But will it be possible to give us the names of the companies involved in the recording of the Symphony ?
We would all appreciate that as well.
Thanking You,
Sincerely Yours,
T.Madhan Raghavan,
Goa.

Dear Mr. Raghavan,
Please ignore the reply I sent you a little earlier to your query on the identities of the record companies involved. It was evidently a mistake to say that RPO was taken over by EMI. And I am sorry I am unable to
help you any further on this at this point.
Sincerely,
P. Jacob
Dear Sir,
Thanks for your reply - at least we have all been ascertained that
the Maestro's SYMPHONY is real and true !!!
Three cheers to FRONTLINE and on behalf of Music lovers all around
the world, a million thanks for the wonderful writeups on this unassuming
incomparable genius, whose creations are matchless and timeless in their
beauty !! May the yeoman service rendered by your magazine continue!!!
Madhan Raghavan,
Goa.

Udhaya: Thanks a wonderful million. It is heartening to know that some folks are really taking action. My sincere regards to Madhan. (Really, nice letters.)
However, it is hard to understand why should Frontline (Or, Mr. Panneerselvam) not be interested in giving Madhan the true facts or try to lead us to information.
This whole Symphony thing is becoming more and more elusive.

Guys, nice to see some light in this issue, still I belive only my musical ear than the gossip ear and eyes.
There is no doubt on Raja's capacity to do a symphony, but did he really complete it.
Completing a symphony is not easy.

Dear Srikanth,
Your response is symbolic of "naan pudichha muyalukku moonu kaaludhaan" " I saw The Eiffel Tower is in Antartica " kind of statement -
After one full year's attempts at getting some news about the Symphony, I have managaed to get something , or if that sounds boastful, the FRONTLINE has decided to share some bit of news with us - and here comes a person who questions the authenticity of FRONTLINE's statements !!
AVANAVAN MAANJU MAANJU, THEDAADHA IDAMELLAAM THEDI YEDHO NEWS KEDAICHHA TEMPORARY RELIEF LA IRUKKAAN - and you have the audacity to call this GOSSIPP !! I find your attitude least amusing and most annoying -
"Composing a Symphony is not easy" - YES, we all know that - but the way you have made use of this statement seems to suggest as if you yourself have composed a dozen symphonies and therefore you know about symphonies better than anybody else including Maestro.Illayaraaja himself.....
Had you been sincere enough, you would have put some efforts to find out about the Symphony - instead, you have been resorting to criticisms in the air .
Nobody is interested in knowing whether the release of the Symphony and its news is going to affect one Mr.Srikanth in any way - but most of us, if not all of us are very happy and relieved to have got some authentic information about the Symphony.

Dear Madhan,
Thanks for your efforts.. Thanks a lot for your email as well. Please do not get upset by criticism. Different people have different views and different ways of expressing that.
So go ahead and if u need any help pls let us know and we are ready to do what we can .
I agree with Raj. SPM and Srikanth are typical examples of the varied spectrum. One goes all length to praise and the other never misses an opportunity to criticise.
So just don't get dis-heartened .. We do certain things for the passion we have for it.Your efforts show the passion u have for IR's music. And so many of us share a similar thing.
Thanks again and Good Luck !
Cheers

Take it in a positive stride.
I kow how much of pains you must undergone to gather those info.Keep it up.And give us more news about it.
The more they critise more populatity is being gained.

"Completing a symphony is not easy."
I really pity you Mr.IR. Better you had not composed (did not according to others) the symphony.

Entire Tamil community pity you Swami. So how many Symphonies have you composed? God Bless your intelligence
- From: Shankar (@ webgate0.mot.com) on: Sun Mar 7 04:22:04 EST 1999
STS,
i think u misunderstood what swami was trying to say :-))))
Srikanth,
I guess u've heard of Limca Book of records. It says his symphony no 1 "symphonic fantasy" was played in Albert hall , london along with symphony no2 (completed in 16 days)and i think u know that no orchestra wud play an incomplete symphony.
And the guys at frontline are no fools to write an article on Raja if they think he hasn't done any work.
