Though I could hear bits and pieces of Padayappa earlier (which were ofcourse not so impressive), on May 1st I was forced to give a full listening of the songs; Extremely popular they are in TN now, though very ordinary compositions(probably the Rajini effect). Since many have praised in DF on Minsarakanna, I gave more than needed attention to that song. Big disappointment!!
People use some carnatic jargons and try to praise that song; I would rather call it SHOUTING! Right from the pallavi, the lady keeps shouting! I think ARR should listen to filmy-classical songs like `Indraikku enindha anandhame' before composing such nos. And N Shree had better listen to all the VJ songs to improvise her singing in films!

eden the problem is there is nothing else nice happening in Tamil movies. People are falling to their lead icon Rajni. before Rajni was in the background and IR in the forefront when it came to street music. now what else?

Praveen: Its just that I don't have the hardware to listen from the web. So its an achievement whenever I listen to a new Tamil song( which happens when somebody here buys a cd either when they go to India or online).

Eden, singing in high-pitch doesnt mean shouting. IMO, Nitya Sree has handled minsaara kanna pretty well. Though its argueable if Nitya's voice suited Ramya, i liked the way she sang it. Pitch-wise, it aint much diff from kannodu kanbadhellam.. Will you classify the rendering of "thalaiva" in kanodu kanbadhellam as shouting????
I saw padaiappa last weekend and i also listened to the CD / MP3 versions of padaiappa songs (thanks . After listening to the songs a few times, I have started liking Suthi suthi vandeega. The song has been picturised well too, and is pretty catchy. Harini has done a good job, including some sinungals midway. :-). (Geetha, are there traces of maand in this song.. can you confirm the raga(s)?)

I agree again with you on the nithyashree song. I happened to see padiappa on video. Her voice is irritating. I don't know how she sings other songs, I haven't heard her much. Probably another singer would have done it better.

Hi !
I thought I ought to review ARR's albums for a change. The last album of ARR's that I listened to with any seriousness was "Kaathalan". Though Padayappa has been criticized a lot, I wanted to listen to it myself and then judge it. I would rate this album 4/10 for ARR with the Title song (Padayappa) being the only one that really impressed me. The full review follows -
1. Minsara Kanna:
My natural instincts tend to associate "Minsaara Kanna/Poovae" with "Poguthae, Poguthae" from "Kadolara Kavithaigal", particularly in the charanam. Of course, it isn't anywhere near the same class as "Poguthe, Poguthe". When the first charanam started, it sounded more like a young boy than a female singing. This female has very good control over her voice but unfortunately she has not been blessed with a feminine voice. I used to know a girl in college who was the best singer around but had a very base voice. Of course, Nithya's voice is even worse than hers. As Eden said, she is literally shouting those lines where the ghamakams are less and the tune goes slightly flat (which is pretty much the case for most of the song). The first interlude was typical ARR stuff - here a ping, there a ping and everywhere a dum, dum. The second interlude (which just got over) vandhadum theriyala, ponadhum theriyala :-(
Pah ! the lyricist must have had a hell of a time with this song #$@#$@ ! Second charanam, appadiye, cramp panni, adachi, squeeze panni, yennennamo panniyirukkaar ! Thaangala !
The third interlude is just going on, and I am already convinced that ARR is never going to excite me - sheer cacophony !!! Why is Nithyasree howling, and the guy - what can I say. I felt sheer relief that this song got over. Ok, I HATE ARR for throwing IR out of the lime-light. The only consolation was that he was qualified to do so and deserved the top spot. But if this is a HIT song from Padayappa, then something must seriously be wrong with the tastes of TFM "lovers" back home :-((( The only good part of the song was the way in which he blended the mridungam and drums in the prelude and the pallavi sung right at the beginning. He has attempted an IRish kind of orchestration in the pallavi. But perhaps in trying to different, he has totally compromised on the instrumentation and harmony. I hope this was a spoof kind of song on screen - would have suited that best !!!
The second male singer (second pallavi) has not done as good a job as the first one ! Nithyasree is hopeless in this song !
2. Suththi Suththi:
The pallavi's typical of the "breathing-spaces" introduced by ARR (as claimed by arrahman.com) ! The 1st interlude is ok - no great shakes, shades of "Paakathe, Paakaathe" :-)
SPB and Harini carry the charanam purely with their extra-lively voices ! My wife came in commenting - "Yenna idhu 'Nila Kaaygiradhu' maadhiriye irukku ?" and she's an ARR fan ! :-)) My grouse with it is not even because it sounds like "Nila Kaaygiradhu", but because it shows that ARR sat at his keyboard and let his fingers excercise, and noted down the most "catchy" 8 bars that he can come up with :-( full of "breathing spaces" ! another breath and he is going to hyperventilate ! :-))) The charanam ending was typical of ARR - starts off pacily and by the time it runs thru' a few lines, he's run out of ideas and the charanm stammers and stutters to a stop - thankfully ! Deva is even more notorious for this kind charanam kolai :-)
2nd interlude - heard it before in "Pacha kili paadum ooru" - Karuththamma, including the beat. Wish he had used a different instrument. The tune really does sound catchy and innovative. Nothing much to say about the second charanam - SPB and Harini again ! And then the charanam drops dead and fortunately the pallavi starts up :-)
3. Padayappa !
IRish style-la aarambichudhu :-) I think I'll like this song :-) He has chosen the right beats for this song - and UNDOUBTEDLY the RIGHT singer :-) hmmm first interlude is cut and paste from "Suthi, Suthi" :-( The bagpiper-like instrument does NO justice to the kind of song this is - chappunnu irukku ! Charanam sodhapp;ax again :-( - Tamizhnaatu anbu podhumae - nadoola vera edho song vandha maadhiri irukku !!! Pallavi is totally remniscient of IR - and incidentally so is the second interlude beginning !!! But they don't belong in the same song ! I was told that ARR did "Iruvar" beautifully in an MSV style ! If he tried doing an IR in this song, he definitely succeeded in the Pallavi ! Song finished unexpectedly :-(
4. Vetri Kodi:
The beginning sounds like a marraige orchestra that you sometimes see on the streets ! Oru snare drum-a vachchi tapara-tapara-nnu thaattindu povaanga ! Adhaatam irukku ! 1st interlude flute is good - very un-ARR like, with flow in it ! I am pleasantly surprised ! The sax piece following was also good. Charanam beginning is punchy - but the backing aah-voices could have been dealt with more imaginatively. Charanam is definitely good compared to the pallavi. Very good flow in the whole song. I would say this is in the range of "Manidha, Manidha" - but the couple of westernish lines (Netru varaikkum manidhanappa) are outlandish and slightly dilute the song :-(
5. Oh O O Oh ! Kikku Erudhe:
I've heard that this song is similar to some song from Iruvar or some other album of ARR - but since I have not heard the other song, I'll try to rate this on its own merit. Of course, the first two lines are the catchiest - the 1st interlude sounds like it was copied and pasted from some Hindi song - they have such generic interludes. The mandolin-like instrument is a little more original - the Orchestra-Hit (Tone No. ? :-) is not to my liking ! Charanam is like another song - a familiar effect thru' out this album ! 2nd interlude - nice and pacy - something different after a looong time :-) Adadadadada....Enge kaanomunnu paathen :-) Hindi music thaan poducaarunnu paatha, hindi lyrics kooda ippadi nuzhathitaare :-(((( Shame ! I do not know if the second charanam has the same tune as the first one :-(( They sound sooo different from the rest of the song ! The chorus at the last pallavi is nice. The pallavi "died off" like a typical Hindi song. hmmmm naan appave sonnen - Hindi cinemavukku music potta, avanga taste appadiye reflect aagumunnu :-(
6. Suththi, Suththi (Instrumental):
Catchy prelude - I hate that kozhi-kooving :-) The metal flute (?) changed scale very beautifully ! I've seen ARR sodhappufy this in Humma ! But here it is too good ! Kudos ARR ! When will you start using the bass guitar properly ?!!!
Note: I wrote this review even as I was listening to the song. So these are the most apparent things that I could hear in the song (both positive and negative). Obviously, there are bound to be other plus and minus points for this song - which become visible on successive hearings. But I don't think I'll be inclined to listen to this album again with any amount of deliberation. Kadhalar Dhinam, here I come :-)

Anil Kapoor
"It fills me with pride to be associated with a film that will go down in the annals of motion picture history as one of the finest musical extravaganzas. The magical combination of A.R. Rahman, Anand Bakshi and
Subhash Ghai have created music so melodious, so lyrical that it will be a milestone for decades to come. It will be ranked among the great musical scores like Raj Kapoor's 'Shree 420', V. Shantaram's 'Navrang', Dev and Vijay Anand's 'Guide', Yash Chopra's 'Kabhie Kabhie', Guru Dutt's 'Pyaasa', Bimal roy's 'Madhumati' and now 'TAAL' . A unique soul-lifting experience not to be missed."
Akshaye Khanna
"It is very rare to come across an album like TAAL. A film score unparalleled in recent times. Not only is each song masterfully crafted, the variety it offers is amazing. I would have expected nothing less from Subhash Ghai, A.R.Rahman and Anand Bakshi."
Aishwarya Rai
"TAAL" Rhythm ....the rhythm of LIFE....and that's exactly what it's music has been infused with. For a music buff like me, one couldn't have asked for a better combination......A.R.Rahman and Subhash Ghai.....completely in sync....giving us an album to savor and treasure. Each song is unique in itself and truly soul-stirring, with due thanks to Bakshi saab's lyrics.
Divine music that touches the soul."
Saroj Khan
"TAAL" is connected with music, music is connected with Rahman, and this time Rahman has succeeded in giving the music which has SOUL and it is Subhashji's labour. I know this music is going to break many records. My favourite songs are "Ishq Bina" and "Kariye Na".
Shiamak Davar
I love the song I choreographed for "TAAL" - "Aag lagaye lag jaye" - Subhash
Ghai is a director who is always open to change, new thoughts, new ideas and
straight from the heart ! A fine director, highly professional and a wonderful & warm
human being ! With that combination, you can not go wrong !! God bless !! The
music by A.R.Rahman gave me great scope to do something absolutely FRESH
and EXCITING ! Taal means beat ..... the beat of my heart !
