ARR composes, plays keyboards, sings in two languages. He's trained in Carnatic and Western music. He focuses on individual singers and musicians and makes them contribute in separate tracks. He cues them all up in his own inimitable style to bring out a unique composition every time. Without being a complete musician, he couldn't pull all this off without a glitch.
MJ is a singer and dancer, not a complete musician. How many instruments does he play?

//"How many instruments does he play? "//
well! doesnt this expose much! I will only quote ur prev comment
//"don't assume you're the only one watching award shows, concerts and MTV, please. The rest of the world doesn't quite live in a vacuum"//
well u shouldnt have missed MJ playing some instruments. if the above were true.
//"ARR composes, plays keyboards, sings in two languages..... "//
COmpose: not only involves directing instrument players but also singers as well so most of ur explanation is just another facet of composing!
MJ can sing in japanese and swahili :-)
Mr. Srikanth who had prev said u were right to the core. should have something to say about the uniqueness of a composer playing keyboard

I started listening to MJ from 1984. my relatives in US bought some cassattes of his videos and performances.
I reasonalbly remember listening to "we r the world " during our WCC championship truiph in australia
I bought "bad" 1 day b4 release :-)
but with tfm and non-MJ stuff and G.K stuff u r bulls eye!
I can see how u analysed it. But still good brain urs. It initially started to test if i knew the trivia that u knew. But based on my posting u were paralell'y "thundebolted" with the 1990 fact also. u needed to be awake to catch small things.
If u dont mind wud it be too brash to ask u to share ur compositions with me.
I sort of half-manage a web portal called vaanoli.com and i wud be interested in listening to urs

Trend and others,
The pedophile comment was necessary because the term dignity was thrown around rather loosely.
Bharath,
Ennamoa po. All my examples of ARR's smarts fit under composer billing. But performing concert shows and creating one's own videos fit under musician billing for MJ.
In every available performance of MJ's I've not seen him play an instrument or keyboard. If you know of it, tell me about it.

bharath, I was talking about tamil music any way
because you said digital etc, 80's we had more analogs... that why I thought you did not hear music before 90's :)
basically mj has a good team behing him.
but as mentioned above he is the light house to spread the light from the height for people to see. We have just spoken 1 para about quincy..who is the key composer/arranger for MJ...thanks to shyam., same might happen to arr but we never knowm, this is what udhaya means i think :)
does anyone know or heard about how the stage is perpared for a U2 concert? , very very interesting.
I can talk about it if someone is interested.
:)

wow ! what a discussion. I play for a large band in LA area and we all know who QJ and his association with MJ. QJ arranged music of MJ's BAD and earlier titles. The whole digital instrumentation was introduced by QJ. He might have changed his role later, but the credit for different quality definitely goes to QJ (he did not get all his Grammy's for being Executive producer, FYI). He contributed a lot. He is an alumni of Berkeley College of Music and the professional world around here knows who is behind the success of MJ. Anyway, my opinion is MJ is a good dancer than a musician !

srikanth,
We'll have to talk. I dig U2, especially their early, more humble days when their passion seemed real. After "Joshua Tree" they have mostly become another celebrity rock band.

u should remember "where the streets have no name". U2 perormed impromptu in the middle of the road.:-) although I think in the video (it was taped live) they might've added an audio track,I was taken aback by their passion!
//"Ennamoa po. All my examples of ARR's smarts fit under composer billing. But performing concert shows and creating one's own videos fit under musician billing for MJ. "//
yes! it does bill under musician tag! the concept of musician, if is just limited to composing then I am sorry. ARR has sung 5% of his songs (maybe less). he plays keyboard! If ARR sang all his songs or had to compose songs that wud fit his voice. he may/may not have been good. but fact is he did not and cannot.
as a musician MBK's important facet should have been performing concerts. nothing manifests a musicians passion than a live concert!
music video ! for which MJ is a pioneer! is also an important facet of music.
Note: the underlying point of our discussion was the different roles the 2 perform. and Fact is MJ performs far too many roles and is talented in most of them.
shyam,
I have been following QJ, I also retro-saw his motown days and his help to motown people. MJ met QJ in 1978 before off the wall I guess. I dunno who was behind the release of "got to be there".
I used to think QJ and MJ were an excellent combo becaue MJ's career began to sag after QJ.
The vague analogy I can think of is MR-GV combo.
but still I think MJ was the dominant partner. QJ's name does not figure under credits section of many of MJ's songs (composing and lyrics).
I can check the bad/thriller and off the wall to find out how much his involvement was!
//"but the credit for different quality definitely goes to QJ (he did not get all his Grammy's for being Executive producer, FYI)."//
if its all credit = just QJ then I dont think so.
So! among the 8 grammys that Mike got for thriller and the 2 he got for OTW. I am not sure how many QJ shared. I can check the list and let u know!
Udhaya,
I have seen MJ playing guitar, key board. In one of the interviews he said he plays the sax (or/and) flute for peace of mind when he is alone. (they show a bit of him playing sax)
In the pepsi advt the new generaton with Big and small mike . he plays the piano bit.
He played billy joels "piano man" for a concert tribute to billy joel.
Please see diane sawyers interview with mike. Its stunning!
I am crazy abt MJ. I have almost every news paper bit of him collected and every video tV moment of his recorded. Not even many of MJ's friends(including QJ) would agree if there is attempt to discredit MJ's sound engg efforts to QJ.

Bharath,
I know we're straying far off from the intended topic, but that's the way this forum is anyway so let's wrap this up.
Given our criteria for judging what a complete musician is we differ. I'm not going to address that any more. You're cray about MJ, fine.
I feel perfectly justified in making my statement comparing ARR, Webber and MJ. I feel ARR is superior to both of them. This is not a silly regionalistic statement or misplaced patriotism.
I have followed rock, R&B, pop, grunge, heavy metal for 18 years now. Rock was awesome in the 60s and 70s and has been declining steadily since. I share your rightful hatred towards Britney and N'sync and I extend it to most of Rock, R&B, and pop these days. Most of these guys are fronts for studio musicians who do the real work. ARR doesn't have a producer, his music is his from conception to delivery. That he doesn't dance or shoot videos matters very little to me. I think he can stand his own with anybody in world music, except Jazz and Classical musicians.
He's a composer with an astonishing range and is still growing.
I will only put Prince, Mark Knopfler, Peter Gabriel, Eric Clapton, Van Halen, Byrne of Talking Heads, the lead guy from Smashing Pumpkins and to a lesser extent Elton John and Lenny Kravitz in line with ARR's abilities as what I consider a complete musician.
If you prefer George Michael and Michael Jackson then we have completely different tastes and we can't negotiate taste. Any way let's end the digression and enjoy what we all like and continue to grow musically.

Bharath,
I would like to say something about what you said to the following comment.
//" Our musical history is remarkable as it is. "//
good or bad I dunno but 30 % of our population may listen to western music but not more than 1 % of the west cares about us. and that is a fact!
-----
Let's be realistic here. The reason why 30 % of our population listens to western music should be well known. It's a combination of several things. One thing is that we in India ape western culture blindly. I am a humble student of music and enjoy almost all kinds. One thing I do find is that a lot of youngsters in India listen to popular western music because its firangi. So it's cool. And our projection of our own music is poor and we suffer from severe lack of understanding of the depth of our music. Now, I am not saying popular western music isn't good. But that Indians in general feel western stuff is superior by default. It's a sad state of affairs and our poor economic status and lack of faith in our own culture isn't helping either.
All that said, I do enjoy both MJ's and ARR's music.

//"If you prefer George Michael and Michael Jackson then we have completely different tastes and we can't negotiate taste"//
correct! I was surprised by your GM statement itself . so lets leave at taste cant be negotiated.
Most of my friends go into a sort of groove where hey listen more of pink floyd, mark knoffler, iron maiden(that end of the spectrum) and somehow their taste for regular pop and their respect for it reduces.
I think I can file u under this category!
//"I feel ARR is superior to both of them."//
mostly what ARR is doing is something MJ has done before! I find remarkable similarity in their style of sound. Which is why I seem to like ARR so much.
but no way would I kid him to be equal to MJ.
QJ seems to have worked with somany motown artists b4 and after MJ none have shown the traits of sound engg marvel that was so highly credited to QJ:-)
I should also say I confirm mostly to the choice of ur artists but I still think MJ's true worth as a composer is highly underestimated in india because of lack of understanding.
//"Most of these guys are fronts for studio musicians who do the real work"//
true ! sad wud be if u filed MJ in this category!
doesnt mean that if i listen to alternative stuff or prince I wudnt like GM or MJ (prince incidentally is called poor man's MJ:-) )
KSS,
u r correct thats the state of affairs! I think its beyond any point of reversal.
