sarath & ram...i wouldn't give a second thought on which is better, "KAASI or AZHAGKI"...because IR has reached such levels that what he delivers for a particular film is "precisely & clinically programmed" to fit the exact 'reach' & 'impact' that the filmmaker has in his mind when he discusses it with maestro...And the music IR delivers will reveal only as much "LAYERS" as the 'listener' is willing to dwelve into. Dive deeper and you see mysterious & sweet layers unfolding in the simple looking music. Also the music will gather multiplier effect based on the 'filmmaker's' caliber to 'feel' in resonance & synch with what raja has delivered....IMHO (for instance, KAASI songs have a 'meditative' essence or soul or whatever you might want to call it, embibed into them...But you cannot hope every listener will feel this while listening to this song..)

I agree with u VEL,one must consider the situation of the song and then only decide upon the greatness of it,it goes without saying that our maestro's music is always apt for the situation.
He has really amazd in me almost in all his BGM,for eg in the film Lajja...there is a scene in which Manisha comes to know that she is pregnant at that point the music is so jubiliant and after a few sec. she finds that she is going to be in trouble b'cos her child....n believe me Raj's BGM has such an impact in the change in emotion.....Kasi n azhagi are great but I wonder y Raja chose the Nasal Hariharan for Kasi songs

Thanks for the link. 'pAttu solli', 'oLiyilE', 'oru sundari' and 'dammakku' songs are really really good. I heard them in real audio before and didn't like them. In mp3s, they sound good. 'kAsi' and 'azhagi', these two albums give me some hope that IR is still there.

'pAttu solli' is my pick of the album. The way the line 'santhanaththu sinthu vondru katti kondu mettOnru thanthadi' ends is just awesome!

Balaji!
I share the same feeling as you. IR should reduce work, but should concentrate in giving quality stuff.
Particularly, I feel he need to concentrate on in between interludes. He has a very original style in interludes(including the instrument choice for the situation, which most music directors lacks). But he has given it in so many movies that now he has become really predictable and it sucks in a big way.
May be he should do very less work with high quality(after all he is also growing old and cannot put the same effort which he could put in his earlier days.)
This is my views and am I sorry if anybody is hurt.

Kasi's music is good no doubt, but as someone has stated in another thread, Hariharan has spoilt it with his lifeless rendering. God knows what's wrong with the man, who has sung well under IR earlier (Kaadhalukku Mariyathai, for instance). And wonder why IR let him get away with it. I seroiusly think SPB would have done a far better job. Over to you, guys.

I agree that SPB would have done a better job.
Well there quite a few master pieces in the film Illayavan...I wonder how tfm fans miss these songs and make some stupid stuff as a super hit

cram and others,
I think HH sang it the way he was told to. Looks like IR and others wanted it to be simple without too much of emotions...probably goes well with the film/character. i'm sure you all could see a more controlled HH.
don't know if u've realised this but the only place where you find modern/western "beat" is in the second interlude of Aathotaththilae...and the smooth way in which it blends with the following charanam in tabla..I thoroughly enjoyed it. well, what to say...there are many nuances, different tabla beat for the pallavi in the beginning and ending of the song, changes within charanams and not to forget the percussionless second interlude of Rokkam irukkura...simple yet great!
an album worth buying in recent times which has good lyrics, no english accent and modern beat in only one of the interludes. That in itself makes this a very different album:)

MPR said it well...azhagi songs are GREAT ...listened to the mp3 version. Guys dont listen to real audio(poor quality) and comment...mp3 version clearly shows IR's GREAT orchestration....amazing songs...Kasi and Azhagi..
Vaazhga IR.

IMO, the best song of Kasi (not necessarily the one with prospective mass appeal), and also one that's most ignored by everyone here, is "Naan Kaanum Ulagangal". Vintage IR orchestration, real smooth flowing song..

:-) I guess most of us have successfully pealed the first few laters of the songs in KAASI...listen intently, and see subsequent layers unfold. He is clearly 'out of the world' music maker. Mesmerizing songs, growing up on the listener like a monster. Suresh, true about the 'Naan kaanum ulagangal'.KS, why wouldn't you be a happy man? After all, not every one gets a chance to be a happy listener of IR's genius.I guess we all are lucky !!!! Are we nearing the SAAPAADU promised by Isaignani (well, to think that he has termed all his past offerings as 'VERUM APPALAMUM OORUGAAYUM' thaan, is mindboggling, isn't it?). Just APPALAM & OORUGAI have been so filling, what would you say when he delivers what he calls 'SAAPADU'? :-)
And Pras, i knew you would buy the original track too,as much as i know how much an ardent fan of raja you are. But was just making it sure. :-)
Happy listening to KAASI & AZHAGKI & ANDAAN ADIMAI.
