This is an attempt to have your views on the diversity of IRs compositions. If we can discuss, in sets of two, contrasting creations of IR, and share with others what appeals to us about those particular tunes, and why we think they are good examples of his melodic flexibility.
The stress should be Separate but Brilliant.
Two sets, and your views.
It will help us all to rediscovers these songs again, and look at them from your "expert" point of view! :-)

Reviving this great thread.
Here is another example of jubilant moods at contrasting location- "Indha minminikku kannil yenna" from Sigappu Rojakkal. This song captures the night life of a city with its flashing neon lights, discothes and night clubs which could be felt by just listening to its heavy guitar laden preludes, interludes, the crooning humming in between the interludes.(Mind you ,the lyrics don't portray this as much as the music).
The other contrasting song is "Maankuyile poonkuyile " from Karagaatakkaaran .
This folk song depicts a kodai/kumbum festival again during a festive night time at a village with bright gas lights and this effect could be just felt by the music without the help of lyrics.

Here's another interesting juxtaposition - the moment is romantic, the images are of colour and youth, and the feeling is the same - but IRs execution of the composition sets them apart - not in emotion, but in essence:
Velli Nila Padhumai
Kadhal Palliyile Ilamai...(Amudha Gaanam)
Iru Vizhiyin Vazhiye Neeya Vandhu Ponadhu
Ini Vidiyum Varaiyil Thookkam Enna Aavadhu (Siva)
The lilt in both these compositions is similar, the pace is lively, and the effect is one of light and daze, smooth as a hot knife through butter...

One more addition can be the "Idhu Oru nila kaalam" song from tick tick tick. THis song can be linked to glitterati. Their life styles etc. Janaki's rendition in a huskier voice plus IR's brilliant use of backing vocals come to the fore here.

The song nilavu neram, can also be juxtoposed with Night life in metro. Heavy use of sax with guitars with P. Susheela's effortless singing reminds me of a singer singing in a night club. (I havent seen the film or seen the video for this song. Can i know the scenario where the singer sings the song in the film!!!)

I am glad you mentioned Idhu Oru Nila Kaalam. It was another song I had in mind. It is a mindblowing composition. Whenever I've played the song on RI, the non-tamil/non-indian callers always want me to spell out the composer's name on the phone! SJ also brings her own brand of oomph to such numbers - Ninaivo Oru Paravai, Agaya Gangai, Oru Kungumachchengkamalam, Vaanengum Thangavinmeengal...all trademark SJ, done with a master's touch (or should that be maestro's touch??)
Here's another interesting pair, both softer numbers, both on the slightly shrill side, yet capturing two different shades of dew (thought that was possible? IR shows you how.)
Malargalil Aadum Ilamai Pudhumaiye
Manadhukkul Odum Ninaivu Inimaiye...hoy.
SPS- Kalyanaraman
Illam Pani Thuli Vizhum Neram
Ilaigalil Magarandhak Kolam
Panorama of life and awakening (youth=love) all manifest in the every day blooms of nature.
I like the difference in tune as well. The second song has a slight hush to it, just like the breaking of dawn. The first one is joyous, caressed by the vibrancy of colour (the arrangement is appropriately upbeat, with a folksy detour halfway thru.)
Even fresher :-) is Sridevi's face, pre nose-job and all :-)

I wanted to have "Idhu oru nilaakaalam" as the choice for a high fashion city's night life. But the lyrics give away explicitly even though the music also brings forth the same.
"Minminikku kannil" -lyrics are just any run of the mill romantic type. But the flashy , glittering city night effect is just depicted thru the music and humming alone, contrasting with a thiruvizha night at a village .
Naaz, I haven't heard that AmudhaGaanam song. Could u throw some light?

Naaz, your choice of predawn (Ilam pani thulir) and post dawn(malargalil aadum) songs are apt.
Malargalil is one of my alltime fav songs with SudhaSaveri touch.
