A side track note... putting it here, because IR fans talk the most about BGM...
Have u guys seen AI.. the new steven spielberg
movie.. I liked the movie.. but I noticed that
this was one of the few english movies which had
proper BGM thro'out the movie. After Titanic.
Most english movies r normally silent and only
play some songs now and then as BGM score. But
this movie I thought had pretty good pieces.
My favourite was the one when the robot kids mom
initially tries to avoid the robot and the kid
tries to keep up with her. Very nice piece.
Sorry about this digression. I know I should have
maybe posted in the BGM thread. But I was lazy
and like I said IR fans talk most about BGM.. so
thats my excuse.. :-)

Kumar, just a side of the page underlined in red color note. what did you like about AI? i haven't seen more idiotic and childish film than this one... (i agree the score saved some moments, but it seemed like eternity to satisfy the curiosity of what the sotry was about... waiting 2000 years for a blue fairy... ss is now sos

at www.upperstall.com, you can find a detailed review of the 1-hour film on Akka Mahadevi, a Kannada poet(ess) who lived in the 12th century. the review appeared quite some time back, so you might have to dig into the archives section.

OK. here's the essence of the article...
Anu Malik struggled with a song to be sung by Lata Mangeshkar, - a passionate, emotional number depicting the hardship of the heroine- for the Hindi film, Lajja.
The song didn’t come out well and the producer/director was unhappy.
So Raj Santoshi asked IR, (who was earlier roped in to compose the BGM for the above film) to compose this number. Raja just came up with a single tune, which bowled them away. The producer ‘melted’. Anu Malik, who was also present in this session involuntarily clapped in appreciation.
Lata who rendered this number, said,
“This is my first Hindi song for IR. I have sung Tamil numbers under his baton earlier. My duet with SPB (she is referring to Valai Osai, Satya I think) was a very big hit.
Santoshi was insisting that I sing this number. Since I couldn’t go to Madras, IR came to Mumbai for to record the same. The music for this song was very different and I hope I have rendered the song to IR’s expectation.

Digression:
Happened to listen to "Isai Arasi Ennalum Naaney..." song from Thaai Moogambikai (film name courtesy: Raajangahm) a couple of weeks ago...a very well composed and difficult Carnatic song mostly in high pitch.
Strongly feel this is another of IR's first's - bringing Susheela, Janaki and Vani Jayaram together to sing a song!!

This complex composition didn't have Vani Jayaram. I think it was S. Rajeshwari (for Manorama) who sings along with Susheela (for K R Vijaya).
Janaki (Sarita) comes in the last part.
The ragam is also a rare one... 'SallApam'.
This movie also had an excellent song towards the end... sung by MSV and BalamuraLi Krishna..
"ThAye MookAmbike Jagan MAye MookAmbike" which was a RAgamalika with some rare ragas.

Digression:
Thanks Neels...but the voice sounds like that of Vani's (ghaNeelunnu (:-)) and that high pitch).
Pardon my ignorance but i'm not aware of S.Rajeshwari. Moreover, I feel if she had been that good a singer i'm sure we would have heard more of her...can u list any of her songs...i'll try to recollect!!!

hmm... I thought "isaiyarasi" was in Chandrakouns. I need to hear it again.
And is that S Rajeswari or MS Rajeswari? If it
is MS Rajeswari, she is the one that did "naan siriththaal". She has been singing since 1947!
The other song ("thaayae mookaambikae") also
has Seerkaazhi and SJ. It stuns even the irreligious.

Mr Swaminathan
The song 'Isaiyarasi' is based on Rag 'Salabam'
it sound similar to 'Hindolam' the only difference is the 'Ghandaram'
Its a rare raga.
IR is the only MD to use this raga so far to my knowledge!! ;)

raja fan,
I should not have bothered to translate the article from IndiaInfo Tamil site. The reason: They have just translated it from an English article that appeared in Times of India about IR and Lata: Plagiarism rules!!! (unless they have the rights from Times)
MUMBAI: The otherwise lackluster soundtrack of Raj Kumar Santoshi's Lajja throws up one major surprise. In a score by Anu Malik, South Indian maestro Ilayaraaja shows up with a song rendered by the film industry's nightingale, Lata Mangeshkar.
Ilayaraaja was roped in to do the background score for Lajja. This was a first of sorts and a rather curious amalgamation of "pop" Anu on the vocals and "classical" Ilayaraaja in the background. After Anu completed his music, Santoshi still needed that one crucial theme song about the plight of womanhood to tie the film together. Since Ilayaraaja was already doing the background score, Santoshi suggested he do the song. That's how the number "Kaun dagar" was born.
Says Lata, "Yes, this is the first song I've sung for Ilayaraaja in Hindi. But I've sung Tamil songs for him in the past, including a duet with S.P. Balasubramaniam which was a major hit."
"For this song in 'Lajja' Raj Kumar Santoshi got in touch with me saying I had to do the song. However, when I couldn't fly down to Chennai, they agreed to come down to Mumbai and record the number," she says. "It was done on the day I left for London at the end of May for a month-long holiday. In fact, I recorded the song and left immediately afterwards. I wasn't even aware that Anu had done the rest of the songs."
Speaking on the experience of working with the maestro, Lata says, "The song was a very unusual composition full of surprising turns and twists. I hope I've done justice to it."
Ilayaraaja is a legend down South, but a virtual non-entity in Hindi cinema. His sporadic attempts to compose songs for Hindi films such as "Sadma" and more recently Hey Ram came to nought. It's ironical that Ilayaraaja has done the background music for a film that has vocal compositions by Anu Malik, who appropriated a large chunk of Ilayaraaja's musical score in Thevar Magan for its Hindi adaptation Viraasat. ('anu malik-um kai thatti vittAr')and the producer's reaction etc. seem to be masalas added by the IndiaInfo writer. ;)

Peter Pan:
Thanks anyway :--) It is a lajja indeed when copying is done of a song by arr by anu malik, etc.. but again, no lajja when anything about IR is involved. so let all magazines copy without any lajja the same article. the point is: we want all newspapers in India to have something about this lajja song whether they copy lajjalessly or write with lajja is no problem...
btw, does times of pakistan have a copy of this article :--) it is time...
