A request to IR fans..do not participate ..yes just dont participate in threads which are just gossip..personal gripes etc. We should talk only about IR's music, IMHO.

STS, I just wrote what I felt was inappropriate in this thread. In real life I'm a moderator:-), though I don't fancy myself to be one in TFM-DF since I'm heavily biased. Most here know my bias in favor of Raja which is quite contrary to your opinion:-))

That Telugu list is an eye-opener. I'm discovering so many gems that I didn't expect from movies with unfamiliar names. For instance, right now I'm listening to 'rasa leela vela' in 'Aaditya 369' - what a beauty! There's a bounty of lovely tunes in that selection of 250 odd songs, thanks for the link again!

hi people !!! well i am a newcomer here..
well i lov IR and his music...well everything's great about him ...and his bgm's are good from the indian flim music point of view...but you should expand ur horizons and compare his bgm's with english movies life forest gump...scent of a women ...they are all mesmerising ....
and how does IR fares next to them .i am sure he will stand tall...among them too..its no point comparing his music with indian music directors ..they dont deserve comparison of his ablities..but lets foray deeper and get to listen some bgms of english movies..and comment on them too..
thanx

passion,
to comment purely on English movie BGMs, you have to start a new site called EFMPage.
However, comparing EFM with TFM has been done here in the past and I am sure will be done here in the future.

vikatan.com (mr. miyaav section) says Raja will write the notes for the BGM of Sethu Bala's Nantha.
So Raja will write the notes and YSR will arrange the music?!
neat!

I watched kutti on video last week. A very good movie..a real movie not a bunch of music videos strung together with some dialogues :( . The movie brings out the insensitivities and hypocrisy in our society. All the three songs are used as background music. IR plays phrases from the chinna maharani song with Strings during various moments in the film..Wow. I just dont think there is anybody else in the Indian Film Industry who has such a grasp of WCM. After IR, we have nobody to take his place. Well..even if somebody can come up with ICM melody as BGM that would be good but no..we draw a blank there as well. It looks like as a society we have failed to institute a system that produces musicians who are strongs on fundamentals either ICM or WCM. This holds good not only for music but also for other fields like programming. There are more programmers whose resumes are replete with the popular three-letter-acronyms but totally ignorant of very basic algorithms (Knuth ? Who ?).
Basically, I am happy that IR is great and is providing good quality music. But I am sad that there is no competition and some people are even thinking that he is a sucker to concentrate on BGM. Without good BGM we are not anywhere in developing our movie-making skills into a serious art from.

Excellent point and there was an another point which sparked in me when i was watching "Paandavar Bhoomi". If everyone follows the style of making songs in the western way, with heavy bass, with no emphasis to authenticity and originality, ICM will be lost deep in the woods. After IR I personally think BGM will be a thing of the past. MD's today are more concerned on how to market themselves and their music, in most instances a piece of junk.

I disagree, because most of the greats of malayalam and tamil film music were strongly rooted in ICM who were also open to bring in Western musical elements. if you looked at malayalam films before the 80s most of the composers created just fascinating music with completely indian instruments which means flute, veena and the percussion and other folk instruments. Mostly only MK Arjunan, R K Sekar (ARR's father), MSV and IR departed and incorporate WCM idioms in a big way. Even Salil Chowdhury when composing for malayalam films indulged mostly in south Indian instruments, forget even his native Bengali folk instruments!!! If we were not rooted in classical music of India i think we would not have such rich heritage of popular music in films. In music, honestly we are light years ahead in theory, concepts and ideas. but, presentation it is ARR who has understood the significance of touching the pulse of the not-so-intelligent audience of today!!! otherwise IR would be selling even today! the audience changed, the music directors approach to music too changed. Little music but more hype. All that crap about ARR's strong understanding of western classical stuff does not show in his works, some Indian classical is there... but, times have changed.
and the other thing about Vijay Manuel, i think he has become Veejay the Man...

rf,
I do agree that the 'greats of malayalam and tamil film were rooted in ICM who WERE also open to WCM'. I think it is WERE. But in the present scenario I have not heard good ICM (after bArathy) or WCM. Maybe even the current music directors know stuff but are just being 'commercial' but how can we tell if they do not produce good quality stuff. I agree with you when you say 'Little music but more hype'. I am really fond of Indian music as well as Western Classical but to me the new songs are just plain ordinary songs with 'modern percussion' and good recording or 'presentation'.
I see many foreign movies from China/Japan and all of them have good BGM how come our tamil movies BGM suck and we have to rely only on IR ? That is why I said there is no system to produce good ICM or WCM trained musicians.
We need to have music taught in high schools, otherwise our discerning abilities for good quality music will suffer (and it does).
(BTW, the success of ARR is a different discussion after all. I can forward you a small writeup on that written 2 yrs ago)
