Kiran, ok i will :-)
"Ulagame" is a mind blowing composition allright. I have heard people who have tried playing the tune on some instrument say,"It is a bit complicated & confusing tune. You never know if u have chosen the right key to play the tune." Incidentally, the song follows the raga scale of NEETHIMATHI. It seems offlate raja uses NEETHIMATHI for situations which proclaim the need for equality/justice. "EN KANAVINAI KEL NANBA" from DHESIYA GEEDHAM too is set in NEETHIMATHI.
Overal, "Ulagame" is one massive song.
One additional info...the seemingly maddening techno pop song "unai kaanum bothu hey hey" in EMV follows that raga scale of RAGAVARDHINI, a scale never used in TFM before. :-)

Yes, "EN KANAVINAI KEL NANBA" is a great song that captivated me on the very first hearing. Is the song available in mp3 format on the net?

Krishnan,
EN KANAVINAI KEL NANBA from DHESIYA GEEDHAM is an under-recognized gem of IR. The real audio file may be available at raajangahm.com. The haunting flute pieces in the interlude are stunning.
Another info...'Katula thalaiyaatura siru aavaram poove' from SMK is based on raga THILANG, i feel. What a contrasting usage, when one "Manadhil Urudhi Vendum" from the film Sindhu Bhairavi. The SMK usage is folkish while the song in film sindhubhairavi is pure carnatic.
SMK is a mind blowing album from IR. See the childish innocense in IR's voice in the song,"AMMA SONNA AARIRARO"..any other singer would have distorted the intended feel.

Suresh,
Good Point.. Even now IR has been walking away with three state awards in Kerala either for the music or the BGM ( There are two separate categories there)in the last six years which speaks much..
One of the best melodies of last year in Malayalam was "Kodamanjin Thaazhvarayil" in the film "Kochu Kochu Santhoshangal" of which type IR has not composed in Tamil for a long time now... Why so...

Re: kOdamanjin thAzhvaraiyil - this is the kind of groovy (I think thats the word) melody that is guaranteed to be popular. No wonder it was played in cable channels often. IR did songs like these in his earlier days, but probably gave it up as being 'too easy' for him. But KKS has two carnatic/classical numbers which are mind blowing. Looks like music taste changes over time (age ? :)). I used to like 'andhi mazhai' but now like azhagil azhagu from rAjapaarvai. I am pretty sure IR would also put more value to azhagil azhagu over andhi mazhai. This is from an individual point of view. But if you look at the whole population, the audience will continue to prefer songs which have more rhythm factor than melody. For an artiste like IR, it is understandable why he/she would prefer not to do certain kind of songs after a while.
That was a digression, anyways, I think Malayalam Film Music melodies minimum quality is much better than TFM , based on my random sampling. More rAgam influenced tunes, only the orchestration might be considered archaic by the the so-called hip tamil audience. The lyrics seem to be good as well.I also like the recording - more natural instruments, with minimal sound engineering distorting the natural timbre of instruments.
That dEsiya geetham song is surely fantastic..Can somebody recommend a website for buying tamil and malayalam CDs ?

Guys...
It is right... That song from Dhesiya Geetham is yet another beautiful score of IR. Is there any news, if Kochu Kochu Santhosangal, can be remade in Malayalam.
When I saw En Mana Vanil, rather than watching the picturisation of songs, I was enjoying the songs themselves very much. I would love to listen to tamil version of KKS.
Thanks for all those bringing up suppressed gems of IR amidst the monotonous(noise) beats. And even S.A.Rajkumar like MDs getting chance to compose tamil songs was ridiculous. I hope IR comes back fully and changes the current situation of mediocre MDs providing mediocre songs.

I feel happy to see that you are frustrated, which is what I exactly wanted, because when you see some vomits in your place then you get frustrated. I just redirected the vomits that your people have been making in our place. What I wanted to say is if you are so tempted to vimt then do it in your backyard, not in ours.
Even though we are healthy and don't have avomit problem, we are intelligent enough to redirect the vomit cannal to your field. So stop vomitting and advice, instead of me, others in your side to not to vomit.
Good that now our place seems to be free of sh*ts for the past few days. Your place will also be of flowers if you pay a little bit more restraint.
I am off..Enjoy SMK, if you like it.

Kiru
hi:)
I agree, 'Kodamanjil' should've been a walkover for IR. Somehow, I got turned off this song by Chitra (of all people) trying to do SPB-style magic at the beginning of each line in the pallavi (for instance, she sings 'kodamanjil' as 'ah kodamanjil', and so on). IMO, (many might disagree) Chitra spoilt the smooth flow of an otherwise melodious duet.
I'm also seeing with interest your point about how your order of liking for songs in an album change over a period of time. Have you given a good hearing to 'Naan Vaakkapatta' in Desiya Geetham? I place this above 'En kanavinai', this is a rustic melody that unfolds an entire story in its simple tune and orchestration. I havent seen the movie to comment on how Cheran picturised this, but in the hands of an imaginative director this could've been impactful.
There are songs that you give a pass initially, and much later when you play it you find a different meaning. My fav. in Rajaparvai has always been 'Vizhiyorathu kavithai', but where 'Andhi Mazhai' scores is in the fact that it is a product of total harmony - between the director, lyricist, MD, and the cameraman & editor who produced it so well. Not to mention Madhavi in the swimsuit:)

Are Yaar
You act like a petulant child, belabouring the same point over and over in myriad threads. Many times you've been ignored to your obvious displeasure, much like sane elements in 'your' threads bypass morons who bring in unwanted and low-brow comments. Provocation is something you seem to ardently court, but judging by the language you use, it seems you're in an eternal state of agitation.
I hope that you get a bit more civility in your language and limit your sanitary-style emissions, and get it into your head that as IR or ARR fans, none of us are responsible for what others write. If someone makes a nasty comment, you're better off ignoring this and discouraging further practice; if you can't and your hot-blooded nature screams for retribution, you should engage those posters in verbal duels for which you seem to have abundant time and energy.

It's easy to get negative and sarcastic, my friend. But please, if you have the inclination to match low-brow with lower-brow, do so at your pleasure. All I ask you is, do it with your muck-slinging peers. Don't just chest-thump and feel elated at imagined victories of debate because one's got no time to waste on your trivial pursuits. Time to move on...

Your retort to Are Yaar was one of the best I've read in TFM DF in a long time. Crisp and Precise, with the right words in tow! Reminded me a lot of New York Times' Movie reviews!!

I dont necessarily subscribe to the argument going on between you and Suresh....the fact is I'm not even aware of the issue! I was merely commenting on the way Suresh's message was constructed! No offense meant!
