For a good understanding of how to approach this ongoing symposium, please refer to the thread, "Kannadhaasan Vs. Vairamuthu TFM Symposium Topic 1:Iyarkai Varnanai" before you post. Let me reiterate that this is not a patti mandram, but
a research symposium.
Please show TFM examples of both poets with regards to just theirVaarththai Prayoagam for this thread. By vaarththai prayoagam, we mean captivating use of language, word play, different use of a known word, vocabulary, etc. Please provide the name of the song whose lines you excerpt and the name of the movie if known.

 Radha Sanjay,

 I think
thaamaraik kannangaL, thEn malar kiNNangaL.. is by Vaali from the film (if I am correct) Edhir N-eechal.

 elumbarae,
I agree with all your selections except the one under Yo_Yo_pattu where you have given the classic song from Nenjil Or Aalayam. This song is not quite a good example of word play because it is just rhyming. This is undoubtedly a great song though, maybe you should use it for the "situational songs" topic where it will be more appropriate. Just a thought, what do others think about this?
I would like to stress again that this thread is to show unique play on words, language, vocabulary , etc.

Some more lines of VM that we can appreciate for the choice of words that add to the kavinayam are:

 muththam tharum EEram pathinthirukkum..
 mullai iLam pOOveduththu mugamthudaikkum..
 :
 :
 bOthai koNdu pOO azhaikka
thEdi vanthu thEn edukka.. (song : "isai mEdaiyil..intha vELaiyil..")

In another song (Ayiram thAmarai mottukkaLE), VM has used the following lines in silEdai (the first line, I think) :

 ingu reNdu jAthi malligai
 pOttukkoLLum kAthal paNdigai
 kOvilil kAthal thozhigai

He also adds another description of the lovers in the same song as :

 pulveLiyin mEEthu reNdu pOOmAlai
 onRai onRu sOOdum ithu ponvELai..

Needless to say the line adikkadi thAgam vanthu ALaik kudikkum too is rich in kavinayam

Description of lovers who separate and rejoin is very nice in the lines:

 jOdi nathigaL pAthai vilagich sErnthana
 kathai pEsina..
iru karai muzhuthum ini malar vaLarum..

I have always liked the way VM described about a muthal iravu in a different style:

 muthan muthalAp pArkkumpOthu
 achchamAga irukkum.. AnA
 vidinja piRagu viLakkil eNNai
michchamAga irukkum (song : "ALAnAlum ALu..")

In another song, VM describes about munthAnaich siRai mostly suited to the situation, I think:

 adadA munthAnai siRaiyAnathu
 athuvE envAzhvin muRaiyAnathu..
 pARai onRin mElE - oru
 pOOvAy muLaiththAyE
 uRavukku uyirthanthAyE..

Few other lines of VM which have the good impact due to choice of words are:

 pOOvE..iLaiya pOOvE
 varamtharum vasanthamE
 :
 :
 kuzhal vaLarnthu alaiyAnathE
 iravugaLin izaiyAnathE..

 un vAsalil ennaik kOlamidu
illai enRAl oru sAbamidu.. (song : "EEramAna rOjAvE..")

 thEnE
 kangaikku Enintha thAgam?
nathigaL virainthAl kadalum vazhividum.. (song : "pAda vanthathOr..")

 pAthai thadumARum
 ithu bOthai mazhaiyAgum
munthAnai vAsam EthO sugam.. (song : "pOOvAdaikkARRu..")

 alaiyil mithakkum mAthuLai
ivaL brammadEvan sAthanai.. (song : "nathiyil Adum..")

 More later..

 Song: hai rabba; Film: Jeans
VM sees flowers as standing on one leg , as in "ottraik kaal thavam" to reach her beautiful hair:

 ottraikkaalilae pookkal nirppathu
 un koondhalil nindraadaththaan

 Song: Chandhiranai: Film: Ratchagan
In this song VM shows the difference in the awareness of lovers brought on by love:

 pookkalai sedi kodiyin porul
 endru ninathirundhaen
 poovai unnaip parthapinnae
 pookkalin mozhi arindhaen
 thalaiyanai enbathu
 thalaikkendru ninaithirundhaen
 thalaivanai pirindhapinnae
 thaliyanai thunai arindhaen

in this following stanza he shows the transformation of the lovers' personality since they found love

 theeppantham pondravan naan
 theebamaai aagivittaen
 puyalukku pirandhaval naan
 thendral endru aagivittaen
 karungallaip poandravan naan
 karpooram aagivittaen

 thaamarai malar kondu
 udal seitha oaviyamae
 ennudal baaram mattum
 eppadi thaangukiraai?

the following lines do a nice update on the proverb, "kodikku kai baarama"

 meengalaich chumappathondrum
 neerukku baaramillai
 kadhalaich chumakkayilae
 kaadhalanum baaramillai
 . . .
 sorgaththirkku vandhu vittoam
 tharkkaththirku naeramillai

tharkkaththirku a rarely used word also fits as a nice rhyme to sorgaththirkku

 Song: nenjae nenjae; Film: Ratchagan
These lines are spoken by a woman to console her lover that their separation isn't permanent.
Here VM uses a superb imagery where he sees sunset as a seed going down and sunrise as the blossom:

 asthamanam ellam
 nirandharam alla
 maerkkil vidhaithaal
 kizhakkil mulaikkum

 Song: oru naal; Film: Andhimanthaarai
Notice the simple language used by VM to show a villager's sentiment about fate:

 Kaaviri nadhiyum
 rendaagak koodum
 kollidam vandhu
 onnaagach chaerum
 kaalaththin kanakkai
 yaar kaanak koodum

 . . .
the following lines describe the aging body and the ageless love:

 neendamudi konjam
 niram maarippoachchu
 sanguk kuzhiyodu
 kural maarippoachchu
 koadi vayasachchu
 uru maarippoachchu
 ninappathu mattum thanae
 maaraama irukku

In these following lines from the same song, VM shows the devotion and depth of a peasant woman's love for her man:

 ennachchuththi oru koottam
 sirikkindra poadhum
 unnappaththi en uthadu
 oayaamap paesum
 kaaththu mazhai ethanaalum
 karaiyaathu paasam
 kattaiyilum vaegaathu
 kai thotta vaasam

 Song: sakiyae; Film: Andhimandhaarai
I debated long whether to save this for the "samuthaaya seerthiruththa/puratchi paadalgal" topic for which this is perfectly suited, but the expert build up of logic in the use of words creeps up on the listener to a great effect in each stanza that I had to include it here:

 boomiyaik kaetta vaanmugil thoovum
 pookkalaik kaetta vandugal paadum
 veethiyaik kaetta thendralum veesum
 saathiyaik kaetta kaadhalum thondrum

 kaadhalin raajjiyaththil visiththira vazhakkam
 kangalai vaangikkondu idhayaththai kodukkum
 oarvizhip paarvai uyiraiyum edukkum
 maruvizhip paarvai uyiraiyum kodukkum
 iru viral theendinaal saathiyum thadukkum
 idhayaththaith theendinaal edhu nammaith thadukkum

 Hi Guys!!
Have you heard this song written by KD,

Oru poojyathukkulle rajiyathai aandukondu puriyamale iruppaan oruvan
 avanai purinthu kondal avanthan iraivan
Mutrum kasanthathu endru patraruthu nirkum pothu
 sutram ena nindriruppaan oruvan

Beautiful usage of words. Any idea which movie this is from and who scored the music ?

bones, you raised a good point about not knowing about other topics in the symposium. I just assumed that everybody knew this. The ten topics for the symposium were lined out in the first topic. Let me post it here again for those who join us in the middle of the symposium. I will remember to post it in all future topic threads as well.
Here are the categories to judge both poets by giving examples of lyrics they wrote for TFM:
 1)Iyarkai Varnanai
 2)Kaadhal Paadalgal
 3)Thaththuva Paadalgal
 4)Vaarthai Prayoagam
 5)Nagaichchuvai Paadalgal
 6)Samudhaaya Seerthirutha / Puratchi Paadalgal
 7)Vingyaana/Naveena Karuthoottum Paadalgal
 8)Ilakkiya Moolam Ulla Paadalgal
 9)Kadhaikku Porundhiya Paadalgal(situational songs)
10)Kavidhai Milekarkal (Poetic Milestones that the poets will be remembered by!)

Here are some examples of VM's word play -

In the song Pani vizhum malarvanam from NinaivellAm nithyA, he writes thus :

 Pani vizhum malarvanam
 Un pArvai oru varam
 Ini varum munivarum
 ThadumAdum kani maram...

Note how VM combines the two words ini varum munivarum to describe the beauty of the malarvanam .

Here is another example of vArthai prayOgam :

In this song from SippikkuL muthu :

 ... idhazhil thodangu
 enakkuL adangu
 sugangaL iRu madangu...

The words thodangu and adangu , which instruct the beloved to derive pleasure, have been beautifully woven with madangu to convey the sensuousness of the theme.
