  I remember backpacking through S.India & seeing a film a day.The name of IR got hand claps & whisles in the pattikadus.When I had a few hours to kill before my flight I saw @vanna vanna pookal' in Mds.Again the crowd whistled and clapped along to the songs esp.'Kannamma...ah'.
  Looking through archives I found 'sattan en kaiyil'('78) advertised for it's songs & I've a song from that film not even in the film.It was good & I'm told problems arose bc of this ommision.
  Sridar+KH+RajniK+IR=Ilamai Unjaladukirathu. A blockbuster MEGA bc of songs.

  Ravy : Kathal Oviyam was an utter flop movie.
  A big set to Bharathiraja, who got annoyed of
  this movie's failure went ahead and shot another
  worst movie called "Vaalibamey Vaa Vaa" starring
  Radha and karthik.
  
  Whatever it is .. Successfull movie or unnsuccessful movie, big budget or low budget,
  good movie or bad movie, IR shined well in every movie he worked with.
  
  Infact Kadhal Oviyam and Koyil Puraa gave IR
  a good experience of composing songs with a
  kind of formulae used to compose karnatic classicals.

  HI FOLKS,
  films like kadal desam(apart from newcomers tabu abbas it had nothing),unnidathil yennai koduthen(only decent narration what's new),
  nattupura pattu(otta ruba tharen)had virtually
  nothing to boast about it's sucess except toe-tapping songs.

  I am new to this discussion,but I've been following it for a long time.In my opinion
  1.Rajakumaran
  2.Aavarampoo
  3.Chinnavar had great songs. But the movies were real flop.I happen to hear 'Sendhuram','Poonthottam' songs .For the sake of songs I rented these movies.The only satisfaction about these movis is the BGM was terrific.Nothing else.

  When discussing about "Paattukkaaga odiya padangal", how can you guys forget the following films :
  
  1) Karagaattakkaaran
  2) Chinna Thambi
  
  I remember one of my acquaintance who saw "Karagaattakkaaran" umpteen no. of times. Everyday he used to go to the theatre, see all the songs and Goundamani-Senthil Comedy and in the remaining time he will go out for a fag and when all songs are over he will go home.
  
  Atleast the first film had Goundamani-Senthil. The second film was a hit only because of IR's songs.
  
  Films starring Mohan at its peak like
  Udhaya Geedham
  Payanangal Mudivadhillai
  Thendralae ennai thodu
  Naan Paadum Paadal
  
  were all were successes only because of the superb songs tuned by maestro IR.
  
  ARR's contribution in "Pudhiya Mugam" and "May Maadham" was the only thing worth mentioning in that movie.

  Karagaatakaaran was wholesome entertainment.Given,songs were great,but it was also an appealing storyline,good screenplay,a light mood,kathaiyodu izhaintha comedy + beautiful usage of nativity that made it such a hit.

  udhaya geetham had a definitely different story line from the rest of the films that time. it was a love cum comedy based thriller. the pair of goundamani and senthil became so popular after this film that i remember seeing some weekly cartoons of them in a tamil magazine! something like tom and jerry!
  but music was definitely a big contributing factor.

  PUdiya mugam had a diff story line and plot. The songs were value addition (How I wish ARR give one more pudiya mugam)
  
  thiruda thiruda was never a hit to be put in this category,the songs were great though.I rate this as the ARR's career best score.

  how can you say that JEANS ran only bcoz of songs . music was one of the reasons beside
  a good speedy narration,beautiful locales,7 wonders of the world,radika's wonderful portrayal
  of a sharp-tongued lady,expressive acting of prasant ,cutie cutie aish,wonderful photography
  above all the never-before handling of double action.

  you must be unaware of the situation in
  TN.the directors and producers are not giving songs or clippings to the media and that's the reason why uyire never appeared in suntv and if i am correct rajtv it was in no 1 position for a long time in vijay tv coco cola countdown

  I can't help but laughing at ur ignorance if u consider the count down in Raj TV and others as authentic (by authentic I mean the way they choose the songs,the customary way being the sales of cassettes )which I'm sure is not being done in Raj or Vijay as songs of movies like en Asa rAsAvE was ahead of EdhO oru pAttu (UEK) and it's a globally known fact that UEK has sold much more than EAR.

  countdown is not based upon any reliable statistics . no wonder uyire in is first position
  in these useless countdown shows

  Agreed all your points on "jeans". Just a minute, what is that in the middle, expressive acting of Prashant. I am sorry. Maybe, you don't know the exact meaning of expressive acting. Of course, by Prashant's standards, it was expressive. ARR's music played a great role in the success of the music plus the money spent on the movie and also the advertisements for it and who can forget Aishwarya Rai.

  It cost me £35 to see 'Jeans'(lost wages,travel etc) at the Belle Vue in EDGWARE. It was Asian owned bc the screen was torn!! I think the pic of songs+ tight flowy story line + the Comedy helped it to b a hit.
  Apart from the GREATEST title ever and the most fantastical of imaginitive story telling did the songs also help contribute towards '1000 thalai vangina apoorva sindamani' bcming a hit!!
