You can listen to one song 'Kulirudhu kulirudhu' with a download option from www.geocities.com/arrmp3
The song is very good. Shashi, is it a full swing 'Sindhu Bhairavi'? I feel it is a mix.

Hi Sriram
Regarding the raga of the song 'Kulirudhu Kulirudhu'---I have mentioned that the violin interludes just before the charanams are the best areas (IMO) that bring out SindhuBhairavi's raga swaroopam/latchanam etc. The melody itself has elements of Hindustani Bhairavi along with SindhuBhairavi.
Now how would you classify the raga/scale of a song that has notes of both Hindustani Bhairavi and sindhubhairavi (the later has an extra note, ie R2 in addition to all the notes of the former).
In the case of Kulirudhu, just to be all inclusive you can call this sindhubhairavi in which R2 is omitted at times to give the feel of hindustani bhairavi. You could also describe it as a mixture of these raga's. But if you look at the raga swaroopam/latchanam to classify then again IMO the song is closer to sindhubhairavi.
Anyway, glad you enjoyed it.

Shashi,
Is not the pallavi of "Kulirudhu kulirudhu" set in Hindolam. Let me know what do you think.

Shashi,
The violin interlude is just amazing. What fresh tunes this guy churns out every time! The song grows on me like anything. Right choice of Unni and Swarna for this song. Just cannot wait for the other songs. BTW, did you listen to 'Azhagaana raatchasiyey'? I think 3 of the songs will be chartbusters. Uppu karuvaadu will be a runaway hit, I think.

listened to the song "kuLirudhE kuLirudhE" from tajmahal. while the song itself is an average ARR number, the lyrics are what caught my attention. they are extremely funny and absurd:-) in one place, VM writes "pErinba poojaigaLE un peNmaikku parigaaram".. vaarththai jaalaththil arththaththai kOttai vitta avalam!

Hi Ramkumar Perumanam
Your question--is not the pallavi of Kulirudhu set in Hindolam?
I can see why you might have been thinking Hindolam, but unfortunatety it is easy to be misled with cinematic renditions of ragas (which are never straightforward)
Right from the start, ie., the musical prelude to the song played on the flute is in the notes P,D1, N2 and Sa. Infact, if one listens carefully the flute does touch on R2 before the end of the prelude and start of the pallavi. Once in the pallavi the predominant notes being used are P, N2 , Sa and G2. There are hints of R2 note being touched but it is not dominant and D1 is entirely missing. With this combination of notes it is easy to be misled to infact think about SudhaDhanyasi. Once you think SudhaDhanyasi, it is easy to recognize that by changing the reference note (Sa0 or chord, ie, Sruthi-bhedham, the notes now resemble Hindolam.
IMO, this is why you might think of the pallavi being in hindolam. Infact you could think Sudhadhanyasi too for the pallavi. But, just because the swaroopa of the raga in the interludes and then in the Charanams are very suggestive of Sindhubhairavi, the whole song can be considered to be in Sindhubhairavi with some notes being omitted in the pallavi giving the feel of a different raga like Sudhadhanyasi or Hindolam.

Hi Sriram
Did listen to the audio samples from Mudhalvan.
I do agree that Azhagana Ratchasiye (in ReethiGowlai) and Uppukaruvadu are impressive even on first hearing and likely to be hits.
S. Janaki rendition of Mudhalvane is probably the worst of the lot. (her rendition has a lot of Pisuru's).
I am not sure about Swarnalatha for Kulirudhu; my choice would have been Sujatha/Sunandha/A.Sriram along with Unni.

Shashi,
Canit agree with more about 'Mudhalvaney'. I don't know why ARR has to use SJ quite often nowadays. As such the song's composition is not appealing at all and he would have compensated by his base scores. Only 3 songs I guess will be superhits and the rest 2 look like average scores.
Hey, sudden surprise from IR in 'Time'. Listen to 'Niram pirithu paarthaen' at GSuresh's web site. It is amazing. The charanam has shades of 'Thendral nee thendral nee' from Thandhuvittaen ennai. Looks like a western classical. A perfect song from IR after a long time, IMHO. Awaiting your comments.
