Any news on the release of aclaimed Malayalam director Adoor Gopalakrishnan's film, 'NIZHAL KUTTHU'?
I understand IR is scoring music for this film set in the '40s in Kanyakumari (old Province of Travancore) about a retired hang-man.

Peter Pan,
This film does not have songs, if I remember correctly.

Well, I didn't expect Adoor going for songs unless the narrative requires some numbers which become essential part of the BGM.
I wish music labels release BGM scores for such movies. The fans are happy, the creators who attempt such efforts in shoe-string budgets also get to make some extra money. The OST of Kutti (and scores of such 'indie' films in the past for which IR has composed music), in spite of some marvelous songs and wonderful BGM, was never released!
Our loss, entirely!

regarding kanaiyazhi article.
it is analytical artical on ir.espescialy it deals with why ir could not reach out of tamil nadu.

the article say people just flooded raaja with 'pattams' like isaigni, raaga devan, maestro and made him king of tamil nadu.they forgot raaja is for universal audience.and raajaa succumbed to this and never wanted to venture out or market himself outside tamilnadu.he was content with homestate popularity.this limited his musical journey says the article

Thanks nojalra.
i don't understand why kanayaazhi has said like that (succumbed to internal facetious titles etc). If one sees IR, after became very strong he has attempted a few steps to reach global audience viz "HOW TO NAME IT" and "NOTHING BUT WIND". These two came around 1986, around 10 years after his entry to TFM. After that his attempt of symphony at RPH and symphonic music for Hey Ram Lajja etc shows his attempts to moving global which very much contradicts this kanayaazhi claim.
There is a striking similarity between IR's attempt to go global and ARR's attempt to go global. IR took 10 years 76-86 to release HTNI and NBW. Similarly ARR took 10 years 92-02 for Bombay Dreams, his attempt to go global. IR has scored more films in this ten year period which might be his style of working and ARR scored less films. Both have got "pattams". Pattams are kind of bribe attempt by producers/directors to get HIT music from a MD. IR got more pattams because he worked with more producers and directors than ARR. Hence those different producers and directors to woo IR gave different titles to show their stamp. otherwise the jalaras IR got and ARR got through people might be rich enough for one (either IR or ARR) to kuLirndhify uchchi. So I could not agree with this claim of kanayaazhi.
Otherwise, it seems that for an established TFM MD 10 years is needed to consolidate oneself in TFM and to attempt different area.
But yes, I write all these points based on the limited input from 'nojalra' of kanayaazhi's article. I might be wrong in passing out such statements without completely reading the article.

In the above post the comparison of IR's attempt with ARR's attempt is made just because these two TFM MDs have attempted to go global (atleast to my knowledge). It is not a comparison for the sake of comparing IR and ARR.
I hope, I have stated what I intended.

Kuups,
:) These days one has to give long disclaimers with every post just to ensure that some extra-enthu cutlets don't jump in and take the thread to another (mostly unwanted) direction.
I agree with you on this issue of going global. He is definitely not content with his achievements and acceptance in the Tamil film world. On a personal level he does not want to restrict himself to any boundaries. In fact, he wants to reach out, and touch the lives of people around the world with his compositions, by collaborating with musicians in Europe and America, where he may want to do pure Western Classical or perhaps a melody-rich WCM score that may have to be classified as a new genre.
IMO, he is not averse to scoring music for Hollywood cinema as well. Imagine 'American Beauty' with IR's score!!
Unfortunately, he does not have agents, PR managers or friends with clout in the industry who would take things to the next level, or expand on the contacts that he already has. Plus, IMO, he does not want to discuss things before they are realized and as a result people like us are clueless as to what he is upto.
We just have to hope that he gets his due recognition soon.

Another view point,
having agreed with the above wholeheartedly,
IR has been quite conscious about the livelihood of so many artists who played in his orchestra as he himself mentioned once. Imagine if he had packed his bags and went elsewhere what would happen to them. they might probably find a way out, but still..... IR has expressed the limitations of creativity in film music so much that one would wonder why he is still doing film music. By doing an average of 10 movies a year, my guess is that, he is able to in some way sustain those artists. ARR was one of them, and there could be another one hidden there. Undeniably, he might have other reasons to do film music.
Then one can ask why he is not making WCM albums, say one a year, in chennai. Again, he himself had regretted the quality of recording and limitations of his artists in his two WCM albums, NBW and HTNI. Besides, after getting Hungarians and RPO to perform his WCM, it would be difficult for anyone to be inspired to make music for less acclaimed orchestra unless things have changed drastically in chennai. I only hope that he has written enough music, during this apparent period of lull, for some orchestra to perform in some distant future. He has probably given us a few teasers with HeyRam and Lajja. Is it just a hopeless dream of mine?

Peter Pan: would like to contact you, just for some updates.
selva: many people think that IR wasted his talents in film music. On the contrary I think that here was the medium through which any composer can hope to show his versatility. Look at the hollywood composers, who I believe yearn for the scope to prove versatility as the Indian films provide for. Danny Elfman wants to score for an Indian film giving songs! The current generation of composers like Michael ... of Monsoon Wedding have clearly attributed their inspriation to their liking for Indian film music.
Indian films offer such a wide canvas than any other anyone has come across. Of course, while there is the advantage of unbounded vistas and borderless creative adventurism, Indian composers may not have been setback by scrutiny or various restraints of expressionism as seen in a typical hollywoood score. Even America' pop music, though run into a zillion genres are very restrained into the scales, notes, keys they can take (i mean in one word, ragams).
Also, IR, MSV and others have the blessing to have pleased millions of fans without even reaching saturation point. And, people continue tto appreciate their works with even greater joy without making being self-indulgent yet welcocomgng newer composers with absolutely no talents.
I, for one just seek new and old music from all directions to discover and appreciate but it is only IR's film works that I am just bewildered by. That too, I have not visited most of the films because of pocket money limitations in those days. It is like one man who has traversed an entire science all by himself in a few years and comparing him with a thousand others in Europe who contributed in the same amount. Yet, IR is right now. A time has probably come that he has to lead people into his understanding and expressionism by reaching out. But, I feel IR can do it in Chennai and need not be based in USA. All he needs is all kinds of resources right in Chennai, which so many of his enthusiasitc fans in the USA will do for the asking! I am here. Maestro, your command is my privilege!
Peter Pan, please advise if you have something to be worked out. I am in Chicago.
