Well Bala,
Its like saying," Deva is really great because we're all poor illiterate people who can't afford western music CD's and even if we can, can't follow them, and he is the messiah who just copies them in the most wonderful way and makes it easy for us to follow". Man, what you say is OK to an extent. But if you ask me I get really irritated whan someone copies the songs As it is, and takes credit for that. If deva or sirpi or anyone else copies some song and it becomes a super hit, they shouldn't take the credit for it. What is their contribution to the song? they copy some music and make millions of bucks. I think any man even with a little sense os music can convert a Michael Jackson song to our desi ishtyle. Has Deva or Sirpi or anyone of them ever acknowledged the "Origin" of their songs? Deva gives interviews like he was a born genius. even deva's gana songs, the one he is famous for, are copied from many hindi songs. I'm sorry if I'm deviating from the topic, but I felt like writing this.

If someone says that he played his CD to the prof...etc. I think there should be many such incidents like that when it comes to Raja. C'mon guys, Raja is the first Asian to compose a symphony which was played by the prestigious London Philharmonic Orchestra. I think this is genuine International appeal. I think Raja was also made an honorary citizen in the US, and moreover some Univ. had awarded a honorary "Dr" title.

Ok, i'll put it in different words, we're getting a bit too concerned with the musician rather than the music itself. Musicians get these laurels because of Music. So primary focus is always on music.
vimal here probably is refering to my earlier mail where i had written that i played music to my prof and he started tapping his feet involuntarily and did appreciate the music. well, after i wrote the mail here, i played him various forms of music, starting from Hindi Music to Tamil Music of all MDs. of course, i played those pieces which had a western classical influence in them. he seemed to like'em all.
so the language is no barrier, the taste is all that matters. he didnt like Rajasthaani folk, 'coz he likes Western classical the most.
the point i am trying to convey is - what seems like heavenly music to one need not make the same impression on another listener too!!!
it is immaturity on our part to highlight personal laurels and landmarks to say that the music is good (like ARR's debut national award, Deva's DD News music, IR's symphony). its the other way round.
anyways, i liked the discussion on the topic.
bye

Dr Bala,
"we're getting a bit too concerned with the musician rather than the music itself. Musicians get these laurels because of Music. So primary focus is always on music."
I agree that it is the music which must deserve attention and not the musician. But, consider a musician, say IR who has given us a lot to admire. You cannot prevent yourself from admiring his ability in his compositions. It is a recognition in itself. Now when albums get released you try to spot the album of IR the next time and try to see if he has scored another mind boggling one. This is a trend only to appease your tastes. If you find it distasteful, and if you do not have anybody to share your views you do dispose that cassette and look for another good album. But in a place like DF where we have good listeners we put our views only to evoke a fruitful discussion. Hence I do not find any immaturity in highlighting the personal laurels of anybody because it is he who had given worth the money we had paid for our cassettes. It is some thing like a "kadai". "Amudham angaadi arisi nalla irukku" appadinnu naalu per sonnathum naama try paanurom. Namakku pidikkuthu. Pinnaal oru samayam quality nalla illamal pogum botho illai romba nalla quality kidaikkumbodho, naam matravargalidam solvadhillayo. Adhu maadhiri thaan.
